How much of a strength or weakness is a character's weight?

IMO, extra weight is a double edged sword. Yes, good weight + DI menas you can live for much longer, but when you're heavy it's easier to have damage racked up on you. For example, with Peach versus Jigglypuff, her Dair>Uair combo doesn't work except at mega low percents. But with Peach versus Bowser, she can triple Dair >Uair and rack up 50% damage in one go. Overall, weight is an advantage, but not a really big one. TBH, the best combination to have is heavy and floaty, since you can survive for ages, but you don't get combo'd and chaingrabbed as easily.

That's more due to Jigglypuff being incredibly floaty and one of the smaller characters in the game while Bowser is a fastfaller and has a HUGE frame.

Nothing about that is because of their weight.

Wario is pretty **** heavy and so is Lucario, they live long, they don't get comboed. Why? Because they are floaty, they have a low fall speed. Fox is very light but has a high fall speed.

Don't let those 2 things confuse you.

Lucario is not heavy. In fact, he's I think in the lower third of the weight list.

Personally, I think size, position and speed are much more important then weight. Weight is the mechanism that comes into play after you've made a mistake. The other 3 are much more important because they allow you to avoid mistakes altogether, which is much more important than a backup plan.

So true. Weight is a small factor. Weight helps you to not get your butt killed early. But weight also means that the character is fit to have options geared for that weight, such heavy weights have poorer recovery, better killing options. Of course there are exceptions. DDD has good recovery.

If you look at sterotypical weights, lighter is better abililty to rack damage, better recovery, and poorer options to kill with.

But if you look at the tier list you'll see that the characters that do best against everyone else are a mix of things. MK, Falco, and Diddy hold lightweight status while people like Snake and DDD hold heavyweight. But for the most part, comparing tier lists of all 3 games, lightweights typically do better in Smash compared to heavyweights.

How are weights taken? I know that characters have different resistances to vertical or horizontal. I think DK had the best vertical reistance.

All I know is if yoshi wasn't so **** heavy he'd probably be in crap tier with the other "joke characters". Along with being floaty he doesn't get comboed easily, having an S tier air speed with 5 frame aerials makes DI+momentum cancel amazing.

Another reason I second wario, They have the exact same weight, identical floatiness, identical air speeds (yoshi a tad faster) and fast Uair for MC.

I can't really see any weaknesses to having a high weight, unless you aren't floaty like these too (samus too, BAM)

G&W with his broken Bucket brake is like much heavier than he is, especially when he has good DI.
