How to beat G&W's down tilt edge guard?

Hey all. I play Toon Link and I was playing against my friend who's been practicing Game & Watch a lot. All of a sudden, he knocks me off the edge, and just starts downtilting at the edge of the level. Since I had been lower than the edge, I had to try to jump up to grab the edge but I couldn't do ANYTHING while he was downtilt spamming! I tried grabbing the edge and just walking up but I was hit back down into the air. I tried coming up with my attack button but once again I was knocked down. I tried UpBing to the ledge but even that was outprioritized! Every time this happened I basically just had to keep taking damage until he stopped to try to KO me, or until he messed up somehow.

WHAT THE **** DO YOU DO?!?!

The Down Tilt isn't too bad. Not too much knockback; it's the Down Smash that you should be looking out for. If you really can't get past it, a well-timed arrow or boomerang followed by a hookshot should do the trick. Or carry a bomb, Up B, let it explode, Up B will get you past him.

You can do the above... Or just hookshot the ledge, which gives you invincibility frames when you get up, wait for the Down Tilt to pause, and jump up, and Dair or Fair or whatever... It's not too difficult

Well thank you. I guess I didn't try the hookshot. I'll give that a go.

Drop down, jump, and airdodge around the lip.

Hookshot, then edgehop into an upb.

yeah, about that... when i edgeguard a tink, his upb nullifies and overrides my downtilt.
