The commercial for 64 was hilarious.

But thought "this game looks dumb."

/Plays it at a cousins house

"This is the best game ever made."

/Gets every game afterwards and plays them all for thousands of hours.

I played Melee at several friends' houses growing up, but I was never allowed to buy it myself (my mom claimed it was too violent lol). When Brawl was released, I followed it religiously. After much begging, my parents caved and bought me Brawl on release day due to good grades. Best day of my life.

T'was melee that introduced me to Smash. I always played as Bowser because I freaking loved dinosaurs back then even though he wasn't very good to play as.

encountered 64 in public places when I was a child, but was too young to understand the appeal of games.
Later when I was a bit older, my cousin had Melee and it soon became my favourite game.

Pretty similar story here. My cousin was obsessive about the game, every time we went over to his house, that's the only game we would play, or rather, we were allowed to play because it was basically his religion. My mom would never buy the game for us cause she also thought it was too violent or some BS. Our cousin lent it to us at one point, and my brother and I only got to play it for like 2 hours before our mom sent it back to him, haha. When Brawl rolled around, my brother and I begged for it for the longest time. We followed every update, knew every character, stage, etc. before it was released...Finally, after a few months our parents bought my brother and I the game as a gift for the two of us. We played that game like nothing else mattered. Hell, even our athlete of a sister would play with us once in a while. Our parents still complain about it, but that's never really stopped us from playing it. :p

Let's see...after Christmas my mom took me to get another game for my brand new Gamecube. I picked Melee because it had Pikachu and Kirby on the cover (because I only ever played Pokemon and Kirby).
Which then introduced me to all of the other great Nintendo franchises

That's one really weird poll.

Anyway, my first was the N64 one. I both learned about it and played it for the first time while visiting some cousins and instantly fell in love with the game. A while later, after moving to a different city, I made some new friends and one of them happened to have the game, we had a lot of fun times with that thing.

I later got an N64 of my own, Smash was one of my first games. Though I don't have the cartridge any more, shame.

Melee? I didn't get a Gamecube until 2005 and I didn't have many chances of playing on one before then, as most of my friends played more on Play Station or PCs so they didn't have one. The only times I actually played Gamecube games before that was when visiting my cousin, which didn't happen all that often (and we played a lot more games than Smash too, so my time with it was very limited), so yeah, I only really got into Melee from 2005 onwards.

Then I finally got Brawl day one, same with Smash 4.

My brother was the one that introduced me to Smash 64 and video gaming in general. I was about a toddler at the time so games that were colorful and cartoony were the ones that I liked the most, and Smash 64 was one of them. I would always play as Pikachu every time.

Saw a cousing playing the 64 one. At first I thought the game was fun, the more I played I realized it wasn't fun what I was looking at, it was love.

I saw the commercial for Smash 64 back in the day, and read about Melee in a magazine. However, I had my first experience playing it at a social group. I played Brawl, which was brought to the group with a Wii by a person I made friends with afterwards.

Unfortunately, she is no longer my friend today. :c

My was in the gamecube days. I saw melee in a shop, I saw Mario and Link duking out was soo cool, I was impress by that cover including pikachu and bowser too.
Then I buy the game, Man they blow e away, most of tue time I play alone, I learn how to be really good in the game, beating CP 9 Lv. every day with Pikachu and Ness. Ah, Good times.

When Brawl came out everything change. Then Smash 4 did the same. I still love Smash bros than any other game, Heck it was my first figthing game ever play and own, That what I call First time love.

But now I walk foward with my new Mains. and Smash 4 for the future.

After we got our N64 and we had our fill with Diddy Kong Racing and Banjo Kazooie/Tooie my dad decided he wanted to get Smash Brothers, I don't remember the commercial or how I got it, I just remember having it and playing it with my dad all the time and I remember playing a lot of Ness. I kinda ended up growing up with the series. Got Melee after begging my parents some, considering it was a T rated game and they were a bit weary about it [because you know, my parents actually took into consideration game and movie ratings]. Didn't actually get competitive until Brawl came around. Brawl was probably one of the only things I played for 4 years of my life besides Pokemon. My parents think it's nuts that i'm spending 100 bucks on the smash bundle, and that video games aren't very "lady like", but they've always been behind me getting into smash competitively.

There came one day when my parents allowed me to get any game I wanted at Toys R' Us. Might have been my birthday, I don't really remember. I saw one game with Mario, Pikachu, and Link on the cover. I didn't recognize the other characters. I really didn't know what it was, only that I recognized and liked those characters. They bought me Smash 64 that day and from there it's history.

Saw Machinima's of Brawl on youtube, and grew some interest in it.
Later got the Wii and Brawl for Christmas.

why are 64 and Melee sharing a spot?

Anyway my first game was Smash 64... I was 4 when I got it I think... It wasn't a game I had asked for or anything they just got it with the ones I wanted. I didn't really care for it at the time. Years later, I was looking for a Birthday present in the store and my mom was like "Hurry up or you won't get anything!" So I grabbed Melee without realizing what it was. I think I wanted whatever game was beside it. I didn't find out what it was till I booted it up at home... I didn't look at the front of the box since I grabbed it at the store so I was surprised. I didn't even know there was a Smash 2 at the time, but there it was on screen... So I played it from time to time. It wasn't until years later that I actually started to like it... and right around that time Brawl was announced, so I played it even more till I got Brawl. I haven't played Melee since I got Brawl. and I won't play Brawl anymore after I get SSBU... it's just how I am with Smash. I did play SSB64 one time in the last year, but that was only cause my lil bro wanted to see "them graphics" as we put it when we're being sarcastic about how old games look.

I was supposed to be getting the strategy guide for Super Mario Sunshine at Walmart. Unfortunately they were out of the guide, but then I saw a weird sight in the game aisle. Pikachu and Mario were on the SAME COVER!? KIRBY TOO?! I knew I had to have this game. So my mom bought me Super Smash Bros. Melee, and she bought my brother Super Monkey Ball (which is also a great game, btw.) I ended up starting up the game, choosing Pikachu (pokemon was all the rage back then) and playing Classic mode. I didn't even figure out how to jump until I faced off against Master Hand! Beating Master Hand with Pikachu was one of the coolest things ever! (He legitimately scared me as a kid back in 2nd grade. His laugh was creepy, and WTF a floating hand is creepy enough.) Now it's my favorite game series. I'm 18 now and in college, and it's been THE GAME to define my childhood and friendships.

I had walked into a, get this, A BLOCKBUSTER with my mom and so I was just roaming through the shelves and saw this odd game with a bunch of characters I knew. Pikachu, Mario, Link. I nearly **** my kiddie pants at the sight of all these characters I know on the cover in the same game! I basically ripped it off the shelves and told my mom to buy it for me, she did. And so Super Smash Bros. Melee introduced me into Smash and I still have that very same copy.

I was a huge Pokémon fan as a kid, so when one of the kids in my block said he'd just gotten this new game for the Gamecube where you can make Mario fight Pikachu I was totally game. It was in 2002 when Melee had just released in Europe, so this was a totally new and mindblowing experience for me, heck, you could even play as Jigglypuff, one of my favorite Pokémon! Didn't take long for me to get my own Gamecube alongside Melee after that, and since then I've been exploring and playing just about every major Nintendo franchise, if not for Melee I probably wouldn't be very interested in video games today.

So what characters were totally mysterious to you guys in any of the Smash games? You know, the characters that made you go WTF as a kid. For me, they were Ganondorf, Ness, Ice Climbers, Fox, Falco, and Mr. Game and Watch. I actually thought Ganondorf was a POKEMON HUNTER, and was from that game. (yeah, I have no idea either. I was in to the Pokémon anime at the time because I couldn't understand how to play the games.) ESPECIALLY MG&W. I actually considered him to be kind of creepy back in the day. Also, thanks to Smash I was introduced to some of my favorite new franchises: like Metroid.

When I was little I saw Smash 64 everywhere and it was crazy. You could pick from a vast array of nintendo characters and duke it out like I've always wanted to. Kirby slashing Mario with a sword? Shooting lasers at Link? All of it was amazing to me and luckily for me my local blockbuster had the game. Back then though I was not the best at games and didn't have anyone to play with. So I played the stadium games like break the targets, and board the platforms. Later in life I discovered the sequel at a house party and thus began my journey to become the best smasher (at least locally)

Played Brawl at GameStop a couple years ago, and loved the game, but for some reason never cared to buy it.
When it was announced for 3DS, I was super hyped.

Melee, was definitely the best experience i've had in any smash game for the first time. I will never forget how much I enjoyed playing that game and I completely miss that feeling. From the gameplay all the way to the music. So glad that it introduced me to Smash, otherwise I wouldn't even care about Smash 4!

I was walking through Gamestop in 2006 and happened upon a game that showed Mario, Link, Bowser, and Pikachu among others. I thought this was the most amazing thing. And that game with epic boxart just so happened to be Melee. And that's how I discovered the world of Smash.

Melee at a cousin's house. At the time I knew next to nothing about anything beyond Mario, but I loved playing as Kirby since he was easy to recover with.

It wasn't until 2011 when I got Brawl that I really got into Smash, and subsequently Nintendo as a whole.

Why are 64 and Melee the same choice? I was playing 64 years before Melee came out.

Cousins had this cool punchy game where I could play as Captain Falcon and beat up Yoshi. What wasn't to like?

The reason they are the same choice is because I could only select two poll slots :) and Brawl was before this one so.
Also thanks for everyone who's been posting I have read them all. :4ness:

I had the chance to buy a Gamecube game because of my marks. "Oh, Mario and 'Zelda' (who was Link, of course)! I'll have this."
It's curious how many times I've been waiting for games which turned out to be disastrous, and the one I've enjoyed the most was totally unplanned (I knew nothing about Nintendo bar Pokémon and Mario before Melee, and now I've owned at least a game per franchise represented bar Ice Climbers and Earthbound).

I was introduced to Smash Bros. when my cousin got me Melee for my birthday one year. I was hardly familiar with Nintendo at all at the time outside of The Legend of Zelda and Pokemon (I played a lot of Zelda games on the Collector's Edition. Didn't know much about the Pokemon games but I was well familiar with Pikachu thanks to the anime.) Mario on the other hand...I had probably only played Luigi's Mansion and a few spin-offs like Mario Golf Toadstool Tour at the time. So I can say that Melee (and the Smash series as a whole) really helped me get deeper into the world of Nintendo and video games in general later on.

I was such a noob at both Melee and Brawl fro the longest time though, up until 2011 when I could finally battle real people via Brawl's online. Prior to that I would just use tactics based on strong moves and projectile spamming and never make use of anything else really. I finally realized I had to adapt and use a bigger variety of moves and defensive abilities to get better and take down other players. I started to try and get better at Melee at that point as well.

My mom brought 64 home one day when I was little. That's pretty much the long and short of it.
