When brawl first came out I'd always say that the delphino Plaza theme sounds familiar, then everyone would say "it's from mario sunshine, noob".

But I knew deep inside my heart that I was not a noob.

Anyways, I kept insisting it was from a commercial and no one believed me. But now I found proof.

Listen to the background music on the 3rd stream and tell me that doesn't sound like the delphino plaza theme.

Nintendo straight stole that ****!

afraid not.. although being extremely similar it is probably not stolen. its just a similar chord progression.

and why would nintendo developers be listening to that?

i mean cmon...

EDIT: and after a certain point it stops sounding like it at ALL

and people make music that sounds the same all the time.. like blue progressions. LOTS of songs have been based of that

Show me other songs that have this similar progression, and I'll believe that the two songs had no influence on each other.

Otherwise, someone listened to something that would lead to this. Just sayin.

plus, this is less about nintendo ripping off a song and more about me not being crazy and being right about a commercial sounding like the delphino plaza theme. :)

I can hear the similarity, but that is definitely NOT the same song XD

That is the Motel 6 theme with... a different sound to it.

If I want, I could probably even find an Elvis song with the same progression.

That theme has been used for Motel 6 for years before 2006. I remember it from I'd guess at least 2002, probably as early as 2000. Maybe even earlier. That song has always been one that gets stuck in my head, so I was already familiar (I knew what it was before I even listened, at least what it likely was).

That said, I'm not where I can play brawl right now and listen to the stage music for Delfino, but I do have this feeling that it has reminded me of the Motel 6 music before. You are probably right that they are similar, but I doubt it was influenced in anyway by the Motel 6 music. Most likely just coincidence.

And we'll leave the light on for ya.

I'm almost positive Motel 6's theme song was around in 1997. But yeah, this is nowhere near how Under Pressure/Ice Ice Baby were practically the same. These songs are just similar. That's not a crime.

Lol wow. Are you tense man?
This isn't the most serious of topics, and I'm clearly not one to go nuts on a public forum. I understand chord progressions can sound similar by coincidence. Calm down. If you knew me you'd probably be a bit more lax about all this, I guess.

Anyways, on a more serious note, I'm almost 100% sure that Sakurai had his brains ****ed out at a motel 6 during development.

An inspiration, if you will.

Good call :D Anyways. The song's just sound similar, it doesn't mean they were stolen. Besides, the song was taken from Super Mario Sunshine, which would mean if it was stolen, you should blame those people. But either way, Mario is so much cooler the Motel 6, so Mario wins :D XD

I think what bothers me the most is the insistence on spelling Delfino with a "ph." I don't think there exist any Italian words with "ph" instead of "f ."

Wow

I never knew smashers were this uptight. Must be the whole "brawl" syndrome that's getting to all the newcomers lately.

Yes they do sound similar especailly the one descending melody, its the same in fact not sure by ear if its the same key but however there are many many songs that have the same progression.... the blues almost every blues song is a progression of I IV V, and theres about a billion and two songs that use the progression C D and G, it happens all the time.

Ummmmmm.....some chord progressions just go really well together. There is actually a mathematical relationship. Sort of like there are dozens of classical pieces that have the same chord progression. Why? BECAUSE IT FREAKING WORKS!

I am sorry, but I think people are reaching here. When you have a small finite amount of chords there are going to be similar progressions.

Well I finally know why Delfino Plaza Theme sounded so familiar to me when I first heard it... but I don't think Nintendo ripped off of the Motel 6 commercials. =P They are still too different for the Delfino Plaza Theme to be a complete rip off...

I started listening to the stream, and I said to myself "What is he thinking, this doesn't sound anything like it". And then, a part came that I started humming the tune of Delfino Plaza in my head, and it matched up PERFECTLY. The world is a cruel cruel place O_O

BTW people did you know that you can sing amazing grace to the tune of Gilligan's Island? Know why? Because they came from a seafarers' beat.

Amazing grace is just slowed down, but if you speed it up the words go perfectly to Gilligan's Island.
