I seem to be having a problem with Olimar

One of my main problems is fighting Olimar. He just always seems to beat me. Any suggestions?

There are really two main types of olimars- the ones that spam pikmins at you and the ones that get agressive in this matchup. Just noticing where the pikmin land on you (which they shouldn't) and how to get rid of them (uptilt if they're near your head, for example) will take care of the first kind (and some lasers/gyros), forcing them to become more aggressive.

Leaving a gyro out, even if it's spinning between the two of you, can be a good idea, because it stops olimar from running straight up to you, not to mention the fact that it can kill some pikmin along the way. That being said, good olimars will need to know how to deal with the gyro, either by shielding it so they don't have to deal with it in the first place, or even grabbing it/airdodge-grab in the air it if it's close enough to them. I've played a few olimars that have even perfected running up, shielding a gyro, running up, dodging a laser, and getting inside to attack.

There's good news and bad news about dealing with olimar up front. The good news is that ROB's ftilt either outranges or outprioritizes (or both) most of olimar's attacks. The bad news is that olimar's grabs, smashes, and attacks that begin with the word "up" can get really annoying. Considering that ROB has a pretty big weak spot directly under him, do NOT try to approach from above. An olimar running at you will probably go for a dashing grab at least the first few times. At 0 percent, expect the olimar to follow up with either another grab or an aerial, possibly giving you somewhere around 30% if you're not careful. Shielding pikmin might not be the best idea, since you might be setting yourself up to get grabbed again. You need to mix f-tilts with downsmashes or even a few nairs if they catch you becoming predictable (they shield and then grab you or hit you with a running smash). Oh, and watch out for their sidestep downsmash... It's annoying

Don't get psyched out, though. Olimar is NOT as impossible as the above might have made him seem. Ftilts are amazing, and should be pretty much used as a unit of measurement. If you're exactly 1 f-tilt away, you're fine. If you're three or more, send some lasers or gyros at him. His recovery is bad, just watch out for either his up-b hitting you (you just need to roll up a little earlier to gimp him) or him using his up-b above the stage for a tiny boost so that he can land on the actual stage, not the edge. Sidestep to downsmash can be used, but not if olimar puts up his shield and then gets a downsmash of his own off. Olimar should NOT be gimping you, only the other way around. Fairs are nice in this matchup, offstage or not, if olimar is in the air.

He's insanely easy to gimp with ROB. Just get him off the edge and Fair him to death. The only thing he's really got then is whistle, but if he gets fast you just do a reverse upB and get him under the stage with more Fairs.

The key is to not worry about how much damage you are taking. You're going to get damage, regardless.

It's not like you should just completely throw defense out the window, just don't get aggravated if you're getting damaged like crazy. R.O.B. can kill Olimar basically at any point he gets into the air. Olimar needs to work pretty **** hard.

Due to his horrible recovery, when Olimar is off the stage, his only priority is getting back on the stage, so you don't need to worry too much about him fighting back against your wall of fairs. You just have to watch out for his up-b. If he's within tether range of the ledge when you drop off the stage to follow him, his up-b might stagespike you, but thats about the worst that can happen. Lasers, especially the full charged one, work wonders against tether recoveries. You can pretty much gimp from the stage with a carefully aimed laser.

On stage, Waffles is absolutely correct about the gyro. Olimar's grab game is ridiculous, which is why I always keep a gyro on the ground between us. Plus, if he messes up a shorthopped aerial, you can catch him with an ftilt or fsmash when he gets hit by the spinning gyro.

Olimar rocks R.O.B. on the ground! Spacing is so important in this matchup. Olimar can grab from a distance, stop your gyro by throwing pikmin, and kill you at low % with Purple pikmin Fsmash or ANY usmash that isn't the white one!

He has a lot of answers to R.O.B.'s ground game. Typical campy R.O.B. will not win. An aggressive, well spaced R.O.B. will eventually win because a smart R.O.B. will gimp olimar at like 30-40 every time. If not, Olimar is pretty light, so you can save your nairs or try to save D-smash to kill him at 100. EDIT: fresh D-smash probably won't kill till 130 against good DI olimar

Also, CP with Frigate Orpheon to give him recovery problems, or CP Jungle Japes with the high ceiling to avoid dying with the Usmash early. To me it would seem Japes would have a decent level for Olimar though with so many ledges available, especially the ones in the middle. Be Careful!

At jungle japes, the height of the platforms doesn't really require Up-b's to return to the level; most can get back on the stage with a single jump. The abundance of ledges just doesn't seem to benefit Olimar at all, in my opinion. In fact, the platforms seem to limit olimar's grab game, which would benefit ROB more. You just have to make sure you can handle his aerial approaches.

A fresh dsmash won't kill anyone ever if they have good DI. It's pretty easy to smash DI out of.

Take Oli to Frigate, and if they ban that, take them to Rainbow Cruise. It's too easy to gay his recovery.

On a neutral stage he's a force to be reckoned with though.

I dont think you need to resort to a counterpick(character) to fight Olimar. If you are still having a lot of trouble, then you probably need more practice with the matchup.

Oli can outcamp you pretty easily if you try that. He can stand on the middle-top platform and gyros won't really be a problem for him (or he can just snag your gyro), and thrown Pikmin outspeed and outdamage your laser by far :( AND are much harder to avoid.

Oli also ***** on the side platforms. He can sit on the edge, drop down when you approach and throw out that nasty, multihit, shieldraping uair which will cover the entire platform, and regrab either edge without having to use his up-B. Despite his ******** recovery, Olimar is one of the best ledgecampers in the game. It's just that a mistake can cost him a stock (but that's not the case on Japes).

I've never been outcamped by an Oli on Japes. Laser for the % lead then FAirs/UAirs from the ledge to make sure no pikmen land on you.

Really? How so? Please tell me before I decide to CP an Olimar at Japes!

I planned on camping on the side platforms like I do most of the time when I CP Japes, but Olimar goes under the platforms and U-airs me to death X_Xand when I try to escape I get attacked by millions of Pikmin <_< Unless I f'd up entirly during that match, I don't reccomend taking them to Japes.

EDIT: Just relized Jc said it already XD, mah bad

LA doesn't have any good Olimars does it?

Maybe he can't sit on the other side of the stage and hurl pikmin all day, but Oli can dislodge you really easily from that ledge. The ledge on the other side of the platform gives him a lot of power. Or he can just stand up on the other side of the platform and spam fsmash, which has a hitbox as it falls down over the edge where you are.

Olimar has something that can beat whatever ROB dishes out. So if the Olimar is smart enough, he essentially can't lose. However, no one plays that good lol. focus on fairs a lot, and use your aerials through him (so he can't grab u if ur behind him) or space them as much as you can in hopes of avoiding a grab.

New thing I found out yesterday which helps a lot, fire a laser (even weak) at Olimar when he's recovering. It destroys his momentum which makes his recovery a lot shorter, and needing to rely on uB which can get ledgehogged.

Other than that, Fair a lot (like Marths) to keep overB'd pikmin off you, and use lasers and gyros a lot. Force him on platforms if you can. Uair is amazing, and USmash kills at like 85 or something if you catch them quickly and they don't DI.

The Olimar I play against regularly... is nearly impossible to gimp. He has expert control over his whistle armor... spams it like a mo-fo off stage, but at the EXACT right times. "Intelligent spamming", as it were. The result is three or four F-airs that do nothing, and me getting hit off the side of the stage by his up+B, and shifting to the defensive. Essentially, I can't get an outright 40-60% gimp on him to save my life due to whistle armor.

Any suggestions with that?

Wavebounce the other way and b-air him? I'm not sure if the hitbox'll stay out long enough, but it should at least throw him off.

Thanks for the advice, Dragz. I'll give 'er a go. ?You can wavebounce an aerial?

Or, do you mean to wavebounce with the special (presumably gyro or up+B), and then aerial? Either way... i'll give the two a try.

This is one of ROB's easiest matchups...

Like other people said, get him in the air, knock him off the stage, fair until he's too far away to tether or edgehog...

Been there, beat it.

Maybe you just don't use ROB correctly.

If you've ever faced a good Oli you'd know that just fairing him off the stage doesn't work.

Then again maybe that kinda stuff does work on wifi or whatever you play.

Maybe you don't fight good Olimars.

And lol at JC not using R.O.B. correctly.
Uh oh I don't have fanboys! I guess I lose this one! I wish I had fanboys to back me up!

And really, it isn't that hard, I obviously didn't mean JUST use fairs, I was hoping you'd figure that out on your own ;[.

Yeah I'm sure it works on Wi-Fi, just spamming fair that is. But irl ROB vs Oli isn't hard, yes I play good Olimars, and I win.

What good Olimars have you played? I've played BlackWaltz and I play Pyronic Star pretty regularly.

I didn't know CT had any good Olis. The only good one I know of up that way is Starzonedge, but I'm not sure exactly what state he's in.

Edit: I don't have fanboys, I have tourney results ^_^

Plenty, I wish they had some corny internet names, they don't, that I know of anyway.

You know every good Oli that's cool lol.

Yes you have fanboys, as soon as I say one thing they hop off your **** and down my throat, lol.

W/e, I know you have a good ROB, but I still think the matchup isn't that hard.

Lol, I'm a fanboy.

The only fanboy I am of is Edrees, and that's because I used to watch him play across my dorm room throughout 2005-2006 before I played Melee competitively, and I was just like "man, he makes Melee look funner than 64".

And if it isn't "just fairs", what exactly are you doing anyway? Obviously, you're a much better player than us, so you must have some sort of conceivable answer.
