Is chivalry dead (in both Brawl and the world)?

I went to the Marth forums recently, as he is one of my mainers, to see the threads. One was about honor, and not using the cheap infinite grab on Ness and Lucas. I went there, thinking that many would support my idea of the xia (chinese chivalry, and if u don't call it that, bushido, etc. is fine). I was abhored, as I found many "rogue" marths, that proposed anarchy, and wanted to use it by any means. I'd think that considering that the Marth forums should be something to be proud of, I'm shocked and dismayed. So the question is, while there is none in the Marth forums entirely, is chivalry as good as dead elsewhere?

trust me they probably wont do that in any friendly matches.

if you are in a tourney, however, all I can say is: play to win. every tournament player understands this.

even chivalry has a price you know...

Yea I remember that thread, I posted in it. Chivalry in a video game is a bunch of ****. Maybe in a friendly you tone it down or don't do certain stuff to practice or whatever, but in a tourney?

Most people on this forum are gonna tell you Play to Win then you are gonna get 1 million links to Sirlin's article. Don't bother with this chivalry stuff. Chivalry in the competitive gaming world is called being a scrub. Just because you do something in a game doesn't make you a bad person in real life, get over it.

I can understand "honor" in an MMORPG but it just seems silly in a game like Smash. And didn't Ness and Lucas find ways of getting out of that grab thing yet? :/

K, maybe I didn't get the memo, because I saw a lot of chain disadvantage, and I freaked out. But if it's only marth that can do it, then I guess it's alright...

Welcome to the world of Smash Bros. :)

I forget who said it here, but "There's no honor in Smash. If you want honor, be a samurai."

I like samurai, but I like xiate better (chinese swordmaster). Anyways, ya, I kinda figured that. But if only we could go back in time and warn Sakurai of all the bad bugs in the game T.T.

He probably woudnt fix them. Besides the point that he doesnt care (scrubs wont find/abuse them enough) and the fact that fixing one bug might leade to other, more severe, bugs.

Chivalry isn't even that great of an ideal. It assumes that some people are inherently weak and need defending and protection. Who really wants to be handed something they should earn; its really insulting.

Smash Is Video Game.

Video Game Not Serious Business.

Serious Business Is Menstrual Cycle.

People Die From Menstrual Cycle, Including Spartans.

If In The Unlikely Event They Hax, Proceed To B-slap Accordingly.

If They Still Rebel, Unplug Their Controller, Roll It Up, And Shove It Up Rectum.

Big Thing Here Is To Not Apply Real Life Manners To A Video Game, Especially When The Real Life Manners Will Affect How People View You In Real Life.

Noone Cares About Chivalry In Video Game, Because You Can Easily Do What You Want With No Consequences.

I've always seen it as this, Video games are more like duels to the death, then duels over honor. If you don't strike when your opponent is weak and kill him, he will kill you.

And you can't continue to defend the helpless or fight in a maidens name while your dead.

I tend to display chivalry even in tournaments at my school. Even when they dont return the favor thats just the way I play. I remember at a previous tournament my opponent lost two stocks from under FD. I suicided two of my stocks to be fair AND to spice up the fight. However everyone else is right. Its a video game so its no big deal. Dont expect that kind of thing in tournaments, only in friendly fights.

But of course there is still some chivalry in video games. Why do you think Meta Knight gives you a free sword? But seriously, although I do agree such tatics are cheap, I'm not a tourny player. I brawl for fun, but I do like to test my strength against some of my better friends. But I do wish there was some more in the real world...

"Oh look at me I know another phrase for chivalry in another language. I also am new to the world of competitive play woohoo"

Well I don't think we've met. I'm Mama and I'm an *******.

Take your chivalry to your Xiate conventions if you want it so much. People aren't going to waste their time being nice in a competitive game because it only opens you up for attack. You're basically asking for a hard time when you go into a match expecting everyone to be "fair" or not "cheap".

It comes down to playing to win. When you're playing to win you're going to be effective and efficient. You're not going to spend your time thinking about irrelevant philosophical views or deciding that something is not fair. Why hold yourself back so your opponent can have a better chance at :
A) Taking your money
B) Spitting in your face for leaving yourself open
C) Winning
If you want "chivalry" go play Knight, Samurai, or Xiate. Don't play Smash.

^ bitter much?

I don't know whether or not chivalry is dead, but apparently naiveté sure isn't.

btw, you might wanna edit your posts to sound less pretentious.

LOL,

But, seriously I play to win (most of the time i lose :chuckle::chuckle:).

Irl however I will help someone out, holding open a door, help carry a heavy package.etc. Thats how I was raised, and thats how I will be for the rest of my life.

I have a friend who would edgehog me to death all the time. What did this mean? I'd lose by two or three stocks everytime. I considered edgehogging to be the cheapest thing and I would refuse to engage in it. Sure, it's a friendly match, but I wanted to win. Eventually, I accepted that edgehogging is as valid a battle method as spamming Fox's blaster on approach and on retreat. I still refused to do it though. But I made up my mind that rather than complaining or calling it cheap, I'd just have to become even better on the stage combat to counter edgehogging. And I did.

So who's the guilty party here? Me. It means I didn't do my best against him.

I know where you come from, with the idea of having honorable fights. So think of it this way... if you truly, really, indubitably and certainly respect your opponent, you will honor his/her every attempt to kick your *** by doing everything you can to do the same to him/her.

Other than, it's just a game at the end of the day. No one gets hurt, save for the pride. Pride being something that must be cast aside in order to learn.

When you take this into account, Goku was probably the rudest saiyan in his part of the galaxy. Showing mercy to an intergalactic tyrant? That's a no-no.

Key thing to remember: doing everything you can to win is not indicative of a person's attitudes or moral standards. You'll find smashers and players from all walks of life. From those who preach chivalry and fairness while masking malicious intent (and just how sore of a loser the person is), to people who'll remember your birthday every year with a gift even after snatching victory from your hands via bowsercide... or even after you do the same to them.
