Is Snake one of the unpopular characters?

I do not see him online very often (not counting myself, of course). I think this is mostly because he is so much different than the other characters, so he has a steep learning curve. Ergo, players avoid him. Plus, not being a natural Nintendo character, a lot of diehard Nintendo fans have no reason to want to use him.

:Edit: I just noticed your name. I love Star Ocean! Especially Dias Flac (and Ashton Anchors)!

Snake is a highly unique character, using all sorts of new tactics not introduced until now. Yes, there was bombs and guns, aka projectiles in the last two games, but hardly like this. This of course is going to take some time to devise suitable uses for the character, and until then, I would not expect many users to introduce themselves online. However, I do think this will be a popular character used, simply for the fact, he is not a bad combat fighter, and has massive projectiles at his disposal. I expect a large amount of people to be using him by the end of this year, and good as well.

Yea people who have been playing smash bros along time have a hard time with snake beacause they try to play him likes samus or link. Hes very different from anyother smasher and needs to be played with a completly different strategy. Most people just don't have the patientce.

RAAR, I completely agree with you. Most people will underestimate him, but those who learn to use him will more than likely dominate with him. It reminds me how people used to try and use Roy, like other used Marth. But those who remember, and I forget his name, there was actually a quite skilled Roy player. It will be no different with Snake, for a little anyway.

pro Roy = Masashi?

Anyway, on topic, Snake isn't a pick-up-and-go kind of character. You can't try him out once or twice and truly learn his style. Those who casually do this probably find it hard to integrate all of his moves to be effective on the whole.

I do not think that was his name, but then again, it was quite awhile ago I actually seen one of his videos, or even followed him.

Snake seems to be a complex character, but he has enough good projectiles and moves that if someone learns to fully learn it and use it to an advantage, he is going to be someone to watch out for.

The only snakes other than myself I've seen online just sit and spam the nikita and C4. It really bothers me that they aren't even trying to see his full potential.

I havn't done too many online matches yet(lag is a big incentive not to), but I have yet to run into a single other Snake. For such a powerful character, it's a shame that no one uses him, especially when everyone's creaming over Ike for some reason(I seriously cannot understand why...).

Wow all they do is spam Nikitas and C4? I would put them to shame if I ever run into Snakes like that online, but I don't have Wi-Fi yet.

But yeah I'm not surprised that people aren't using him, majority of the community are people within the age-range of 10-15 or they don't know what MGS is.

I've never played a MGS game all the way through, yet I still main Snake.

I don't think his lack of exposure is due to his roots, but more because of his playstyle.

I think the pro Roy you are referring to is Neo. He is very good.

In regards to Snake, I think the main reason is his smashes. Noobs love abusing smashes, and Snake's are extremely unconventional. They are slow and for the most part unspammable.

I have to agree with the idea that people find Snake too complex to play as and go back to the simple playstyles of Wolf/Diddy/Marth where it's just Get close > Bash A > Repeat (Sorry to stereotype, but that's how I felt when playing classic).

Snake definetly is more obtuse from the rest of the cast. His Jab comb and Ftilt are his better killers, the standard Fsmash (what I call "Click to Kill") is complex to use effectively, His projectiles have a catch in them which turn off most people, and what most people dont like is that you have to adapt to his specific playstyle. The way I see it, Snake works like a martial art: The more dedicated you are to learning him the more adept he becomes and thus becomes your own weapon.

I think a lot of newbs get their hands on snake thinking "alright! grenades and missles by golly!" and eventually blow themselves up before the enemy gets to them. Then they say "Man, Snake sucks! I'm not ever going to play him again!"

Actually, want to know something weird? I don't find Snake hard to play. I started maining him as the game came out, found his strengths, and abuse them. I think other characters are much harder to play...like Sonic LOL poor sonic

No kidding, I just picked up Snake from day one and he felt like an extension of myself after seeing all of Psycho ******'s youtube vids. When I started doing Classic with everyone, I was so irritated that the Ftilts diddnt kill and that the Up+B's diddnt send me off the screen.

Yeah, Snake just totally fits my playstyle. More so than Link, my previous main. Which explains why I didn't really feel any learning curve when using him.

I think you're referring to AngryLobster, he played against RFX a bunch from what I remember watching.

As for Snake being unpopular, it's understandable since all of his attacks require a lot of patience and mind-games. I played about 10 games of FFAOnline last night and didn't face a single Snake, but every round a Sonic, Metaknight, Fox, Falco, Z-Suit Samus, Zelda, or Wolf.

I kinda feel like all of these newcomers embrace the overpowering speed for the new generation, but our more experienced Melee generation knows that mind-games are vital and that's what Snake excels at. My roommate isn't necessarily too amazing at Smash, but he played Falco in Melee and didn't know anything about Advance Techniques. I can't recall how many times I beat him with Yoshi simply by utilizing short hop. Now he's maining Diddy and Wolf, go figure!

So if you ask me, Snake is unpopular but only to those new to the whole Smash scene or with limited Melee experience.

I'll admit I'm probably at the noobish level when it comes to brawl, so when I first unlocked Snake I was frustrated by accidentally using forward smashes and etc. Playing Ness and then trying to play Snake was hard--they play so differently--but I'm glad I stuck with him. Just now starting to get a hang of him, and from my online experience, I haven't seen anyone else use Snake either.

Snake is great for free for alls mainly because most people forget about your C4 and grenade shielding seems to dumbfound a lot of people for some reason. I come here every so often just to check on new strategies, but this is my first post ever, so rock on.

The only time i ever see other people lay as snake online is if I've beaten them a few times as him and i guess they think "Hmm, Snake must be a good character! I'll play as him and maybe I'll win" .

Sorry to spoil your typo rampage, but I doubt Wifi is an accurate scale of ability with latency problems causing one to have input problems far later than what's expected at times. Plus the snake players you see online have no affiliation with the group considering the FC's are only amongst group members.

Take the egocentrism somewhere else.

I actually think the opposite i think snake is going to become a popular character because I think its going to bring a flood (well maybe not a flood, but some for sure) of Metal Gear fans into the samsh community

In my experience its because of his style, its not that its hard (it is harder, but not that hard) its just too laid back, I (ex-Marth-wh0re) Like to be in my opponents face, just pounding them into oblivion.

Still I practice my Snake sometimes, but I end up getting bored from the lack of IN-YO-FACE action (Don't get me wrong Snake mains, he is super cool and I really admire good Snake users [Shoutout to codeArtist])

It's had the opposite effect on me, He's motivated me to try out the Metal Gear games now. The only problem is getting $30 after blowing away alot of cash to pimp out my brawl experience.

It's a shame they couldn't bring in the 2 trademark weapons which defined Snake into Brawl. I am of course talking about the SOCOM and his tranquilizer. Despite the fanciness of nades/nikitas/C4 it was still the socom and tranquilizer that i trusted the most when I played metal gear solid. Any metal gear fan woulda cried tears of joy if they did bring them into brawl.

But, there's always next time! (hopefully...)
