Is there any point of trying to become a Pro since the release of Brawl?

You know what i think? in order for melee to survive we have to literary make diffrent boards for each game. Right now the boards are ruled by Brawlers. In order for us to ever revive melee we have to accept the fact that there is another game out there that has thousands of times more followers. Most people laugh that we still play melee in these boards, its just not safe anymore for us here. We will soon all disapear or be the outcasts of the smash boards. Just clicking "Melee discussion" i feel like we are trapped in this little cage where not much can be posted.
I've been thinking about that too. But I guess there's also a lot of disadvantages to going solo. You'd lose a lot of people who don't bother making the jump etc.. I dunno.

if you get good at one fighting game, you'll be good at other fighters. i might be oversimplifying this, but if you can practice a fighter and learn the mechanics of it and then really understand the finer points of the game, you can apply that to a large majority of fighters. obviously there are large differences in game play, but its kinda like having one way of thinking and then coming up with a different way of thinking for the same solution(winning/beating the opponent). once you have learned all the specific moves and options available to whatever game you're trying to pick up, its all about mentality and out thinking your opponent and that is the important thing that carries over from game to game

if you want money and fame from a fighting game scene... probably safer to bet on brawl, but many things you could learn from becoming amazing at melee would still apply to brawl
This is a good answer to a lot of those questions that are popping up here on the melee boards.

It shouldn't be about making a difference, it should be about fun. And as long as you have fun doing what your doing its never a waste of time. If you don't find it fun don't play. If you do play.

Even though I play both at tournaments I actually practice melee. but I'm good at brawl and I don't even play it unless it's a tournament >_>

Melee is alive here in bc and I'm pretty sure it's going to stay like that. Every so often a new player shows up wanting to MELEE :]

I completely agree! I play brawl because it is fun for ME! When I did play melee, it was fun as well! But now I find more fun playing brawl, for me of course! tee hee.

lol. i dont see why he likes brawl so much. im sure hes pretty decent at melee.
Yeah i really doubt someone who is good at melee could hate it that much, sorry mic but your obvious hate of melee is pissing people off.

its not too late to play melee! once again! Not too late!... havent you noticed that when you play melee, its easier to play brawl? and when you play brawl its hard to play melee? its the simple fact that brawl is for well, people who dont wana take the time to learn.

I went to my friends party with like 15 people. none played melee, some played brawl, and it was fun 4 stoking everyone with marth XD. But when we played brawl i only 2 stocked most of them with marth T_T (well the decent ones) ***tourny rules on each, 4 stock in melee, and 3 in brawl.*** lol melee is too much fun!

To be honest, one-line zero-content posts like that are against the rules. Still seems like there's some bias involved, though, because those posts get made all the time.
If, by chance, you were talking about me, I was referring to this post vv

Melee is on its way back.

The topic of this thread should be

"Is there any point in trying to become Pro at Brawl?"

Brawl is dying because it sucks.

Read my sig.
Which I agree with...

If you weren't, then my mistake...

For me, it's a desire to be the best at whatever i choose to do. I know i have a long way to go and that even the pros who have been playing since Melee's release are still learning. Brawl peaks early, there's no depth.

When you remove the capacity to excel, you lose my interest. I don't agree with removing the competitiveness from games. That's the very nature of a fighting game, TO COMPETE! It doesn't crush someone to let them no in no uncertain terms that they need to improve. It's not a bad thing to want to get better at something!

I see videos of Gimpyfish62 and Mango, and it makes me want to play like that. i don't care if no one but me knows how good or bad i am.

The desire to improve is always internal. Melee is one of the few games that actually has the room for a significant amount of growth, and where your efforts are rewarded.

"May the best man win." Applies to Melee. The slightest increase in skill is noticable, and it's virtually impossible to 'peak' at this game.

sometimes brawl really relaxes you because it's so slow paced
Yes...yes it does...it relaxes you to the point where you're sound asleep by the end of the first stock, even if you're pumped on Red Bull or something...

Well, moving on...I agree with Panda...why suck the competition out of a game? Is it not human nature to be competitive? And does he really think that everyone's gonna enjoy the game, win or lose? I was talking to a friend of mine, and he said that he hated losing in Brawl...people like him kiiiinda contradict what Sakurai said about Brawl being the game where you have fun even if you lose...on the flip side, I enjoy every Melee match I play, as long as I'm performing my best and it's a good fight...that kinda goes against what Sakurai said, or at least the implication that said Melee wasn't enjoyable if you lost...

that's not true, brawl is actually soothing and energetic at the same time
I don't need a game to soothe me, what is this, video game therapy? Melee is fun for me, so I play it, Brawl is not very fun for me, so I don't play it (much).

To refer to the first post, and generally just the title of this thread: what is your reason for 'becoming pro'? If you feel the desire to improve and show your skill in Melee, because you enjoy the game, that's reason enough to competitively and improve. If you're playing the game just to make money or gain fame in the community, I don't think you're playing for the right reasons.

Also, if by 'pro' you mean 'really really good', then I say yes, it's worth it, provided you can find some people to play against. I find Melee gets more and more fun as I get better at it, because so many more options open up, and there's a ridiculously high potential for improvement. In the end though, if you don't have the drive to improve and get to that level, then there's no other reason. It's not like you can simply put a bit of time in here and there and reach your full potential, you have to strongly desire improvement, and seek it actively. If you're too lazy to do this, Brawl might be for you. >_>

That's what makes it so fun. We think someone is the best and then, "a new challenger approaches." People keep having to improve. That's what keeps these boards alive.

I think Melee is bouncing back something fierce. Tournaments like TGMT and LLHS are growing in number, and new Melee players(such as myself) are being recruited. Melee, to be honest, is one of the best competitive video games ever, on par with my other favorite. Nothing can kill Melee. NOTHING!!!!11!!oneoneone

In all honesty being "pro" in a video game (the literal meaning of playing for a living) is kinda dumb. You may make (decent) money years after you start playing. But then the tourney scene (the big ones) will eventually die out and you will have to start years of training in another game (Unless you play SC and are Korean. Gotta love those crazy Koreans. Televised SC tournies with commentators. Absolutely hilarious, "OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH GEEEE GEEEEEE").

But I clearly understand that's not the point. I think about it this way. If you happen to like a video game and intend to get better, why not? And if you happen to make a little money here and there, it's all the better! IMHO, I think that's how everyone started. I don't think many people got the game and thought "I will be pro and make lots of monEYZZZ," because the risk is unreasonable. I bet most of the top players just simply loved the game when they started out. They might've just realized that they had the potential of making money after winning a few.

Anyways that's just an assumption. Don't tell me "no ur wrong n00b." I'm nothing near an expert. I just bought a copy of Melee a month ago. I play to get better because, I just like seeing improvement in my gameplay. I just played a competitive player for the first time (thanks to smashboards tournament listings) and I got my *** handed to me with a 1.5min fourstock while being sandbagged.... and it was amazing. I would be so angry if that happen to me in Brawl... because the only way that would ever happen is through CCGs and CG on walled levels.

Back to the point: it's a darn video game. It's created to be recreational. Just do what is fun for you. If your idea of fun is playing competitively, go for it. If you want to be good just to win money, then it's just plain stupid. There are BILLIONS of more efficient ways in making money. Like going to school and getting a job.
