King Dedede Tech vs Wario ~

I'm sorry if this is already present knowledge, but I wanted to inform in case it wasn't.

King Dedede has a guaranteed "combo" of sorts from his grab against Wario. If Dedede catches him from a Dash Grab (it must be a Dash Grab), Dedede will hold Wario suspended above the ground. If the Dedede player does not throw him and doesn't jab at the point of release, Wario will perform an Jump Break. From there, Dedede can follow it with an immediately Up Smash.

This would be a useful tool for a guaranteed KO against Wario after a session of CGs perhaps. Note that you can throw in other attacks too, possibly the UTilt. It is hard to land however.

this works real good, i think it works on human opponents as well..really useful IMO.
utilt doesnt work, only Usmash. I tested it on some other chars, it looks like this only happens with wario.
its definitely worth messing around with more.

Dedede has to Dash Grab Wario. For some reason, Dedede just grabbing Wario normally counts as Wario standing on the ground, so Wario is released on the ground instead. It isn't a huge set back though, since if Dedede catches Wario while standing still, he can just CG him and the problem is fixed.

i play against a very good wario player almost daily...i noticed he was held off the ground be didnt think he would jump break...good info

its not a upsmash thats useful its a upTilt
and instead of a jump escape and can just DI down instead of the jump escape

wink wink. but not alot of warios know this even with me posting it in the wario threads.

The utilt works, it has strange timing but is way better than usmash.
Whats really important is who else has this quality that ddd can take advantage of, nobody?

I'm keeping a notepad open whenever I visit smashboards, so I remember to try out these things that I say I will but don't. >_<

it works but if the wario is aware he wont jump escape by just tapping buttons to get out of grab. Unless he still jump escapes regardless im not sure but i have done it before but the wario i face sometimes doesnt jump escape ,even after a session of chaingrabs i believe so im not sure if its an automatic jump escape or he just has to be aware not to rotate the control , which would lead to the up position activating jump escape

If Dedede grabs Wario via Dash Grab, Wario will be suspended in the air and will have no choice but to Jump Break unless you hit him when he is about to escape. This is where you take advantage of him, and hit him with an UTilt/USmash.

Well this Tech really helped me recently in a against a Though wario this week... It would be bad if this tech is buried along other threads...

There must be an investigation on how this works on other short characters... even if it doesn't count as Combo, a good Followup setup would be great, specially against Olimar... d<_< b...

Does this work on other characters? someone should make thread that shows all the charcters that can be hit after a jump release. theres a thread like like that on the marth boards. Accually now that I think of it, I think the maker of the OP is the maker of that thread on the marth boards.

Its likely that some charcaters can get hit by Fairs after a grab release.

This isn't something special about Dedede, its something stupid about Wario.

For some reason when wario jumps out of grabs, he has unusual lag time compared to every other character.

While dedede might be the best person in the game to abuse that fact, since he has the chaingrab for a perfect set up, hes not the only character that can punish wario in that aspect, and usmash isn't the only way.

For dedede, what I like doing is cging to the edge where i let them get out, jump dair at low % to quickly rack damage

Mid% i use usmash to set them up to be high and ready to get grabbed again.

Then around 100, i short hop fair for a kill just about every time.


In the same espect many other characters can abuse wario with many other things. Some more rediculous than dedede.

Characters like sonic and kirby can get a free f-smash (for kirby it has to be angled)

Ike gets a free spike off the level (dair), free foward air, nair, and if u charge a fsmash u can punish they're air dodge.

Snake even gets a free utilt, just gotta take a step foward.

But yea, hope this helps. There's certainly alot more things people can do.

Squirtle has even worse lag, he can't do ANYTHING until he hits the ground when marth grab releases him. I'm not sure but it's probebly the same when he jump breaks from Dedede.

Yeah almost every tall character can abuse this trait of warios. Actually there is a thread about it.(I checked a long time ago because I used to play him) However testing others for similar effects is a good idea. I would, but I'llbe out of town for the weekend, and anyway I would not have another player to DI properly. Definatly post the results, and if it hasn't been done by the time I get back I'll try to do it, but again I will only have cpu's to work with. Well that or a ten year old cousin that knows nothing about the game...

A already did test this out. That's what im saying.

Every character in the game can abuse wario like this, some just need to do a running grab near the edge, so they slide and wario is automatically dangleing over, forcing him to jump out, which is why as ike, a free dair at that point is amazing.

And DI does not come into effect. There is no DI when dealing with jumping out of grabs with wario, its ALWAYS the same.

There are only two things to check to see if a move can always hit him.

1) Can wario jump in time to avoid it?

2) Can wario airdodge in time to avoid it?

He has no other options other than those.
He cannot airdodge or jump from DDD's dair, usmash, fair, turn around bair, or nair.

Something i forgot to mention is that sometimes i'll just grab attack and LET him fall below the stage, because wario's up-b never auto-sweetspots the ledge, hes gotta basically do it himself. So 90% of the time, its a free dtilt for DDD.

Just a quick note i thought should be kept in all your memory banks.

Its for these reasons, and some other spacing reasons, that I believe DDD completely destroys wario.

no im talking about everyone other character. Its all well and good that you can do this to wario, but thats one character... perhaps there is more than one or even a couple that you can do this to.

nope its just wario, he specifically has alot of lag wen jumping out of grabs, i've tested it already and hes the only one who takes it.

It's not only the lag that hurts Wario, but the path he follows when he gets released (He goes straight up and comes down, while someone like MK goes up and very far away.)

The only consolation Wario has is that he is a hard character to grab sometimes, otherwise this sucks balls that he's mainly the one who suffers the most from this.

Actually DDD can follow up with a regrab if he times it right. IT goes jab/release/regrab, similar to Yoshi's. On the positive side, DDD has to take a step to reach Wario, so it's not a true infinite. A slow one.
