Kirby is more like a force of nature than anything.
You do not call a tsunami cute, or a tornado cute (ok maybe if you're a girl).

If you take anything from kirby: food, paint, a hat, freedom, etc. He will not only destroy your home and livelihood, he will find everyone you've ever associated with and either eat or kill them. He may kill, eat, or launch you into orbit as well.

He cannot be cute, I'm pretty sure he's chaotic neutral if he's anything.

Also, pichus hatch from eggs and are thereby filthy disgusting bird-mammals. Cute license REVOKED. Go press down to sleep somewhere else.

Thank you Based Mimi.
Now you guys are getting it. Kirby is cool, and powerful, and a monster, but not cute.

And Pichu is just a giant yellow sewer rat trying to pass himself off as a Melee character.

In the Air, Using Up b as an offensive move
I tried to abuse the Dair's tumble animation like jiggs could. Not a lot that's really interesting that you can do with it, though if you're near a ledge it IS possible to do edge canceled Dair->double jump Inhale on the tumble for a swallowcide. Only on larger characters though =\

Is the tumble animation you're talking about the one where you hit with most but not all of the dair and they like lean to the side and it leads to an easy grab? Just wondering what you meant by the tumble.

Well, fair has some amazing combo potential if you understand what each of the 3 4 hits does exactly.

And dair has ... a lot of possibilities. Around 85%, a super late dair (so that only the first hit connects) will pop floaties up perfectly for an u-tilt/bair/whatever you want. Also, you can space a dair so that the grounded hit doesn't connect, and then you get a free grab or anything. Plus, I'm starting to think that if you dair someone who's on a platform, but DI yourself away so that you fall below the platform, you can take advantage of that hitstun.

Doing a super late dair against a grounded opponent is like saying "COME HIT ME PLEASE, BEFORE MY MOVE STARTS"
Well, I presume you wouldn't try to do it if your opponent is just standing there lol. Frankly any move with Kirby you're asking to get punished. All the more tools, situational or not, are need with Kirby.

@ BunBun: Correct. I was just throwing out stuff that I've been in the lab with.

By the way, SH retreating non-fastfallen dair is amazing because if they run into it, they get frozen in place (since the grounded hit doesn't connect when you're moving backwards enough).

You can do Dair > tumble > F-smash on a lot of characters and it's kind of cute

You'd never do late Dair, there's no point (unless they're at 100%+ and you can 1st hit Dair > free move for the KO). You just do it early and then drift according to how you think they'll DI (or away, if you think they'll hold down) until they get hit by enough hits to go into the "tumble" animation. Then you do a move. And it *****. Kind of. Sort of. Not really.

It's got the issue of being totally ruined by DI and other things (if they somehow move into you because of SDI or other crap, you'll hit the last hit and push them away and break them out of the tumble animation) but alas such is Kirby's fate. He's not allowed great combo starters. Except up tilt.

edit:

You can try to delay the Dair to avoid things like SDI shenanigans, but then you might not hit enough hits of the Dair to flip them into the tumble animation either. Which is sucky, because then there's insufficient stun to do much but a tilt / grab. And because you have to drift away to avoid hitting the last hit, you're probably too far for up tilt. Lame.

That's a very informative post. I didn't know how the tumble animation worked, but it makes sense now.

Isn't it true, though, that if you connect with Kirby's dair in such a way that the "grounded" hit doesn't hit them, it won't knock them out of the "stun" (for example, by retreating as you do the dair, or by hitting them from below a platform, without landing on the platform)?

I mostly use dair to lock their shield for free utiltgasm.

If you're in the air and they're on the ground/below you, they can't do much at all against a dair. The hitbox is disjointed enough that it is safe to use on utilts/uairs and it's nearly unpublishable if you land behind and l-cancel correctly.

I'd say it's probably kirby's safest approach.

I 100% disagree. Move is too slow. Kirby has to be too close to the dude for him to be able to land a dair behind. Opp isn't going to shield in that case rofl.
