When the updates first happened the updates came on at 10AM for me, but when DST ended the pictures came up at 8AM and have done so since. Not sure why it changed by two hours, it was probably at 9AM to begin with and I was just mistaken.

Punch out was more of a western centric game, so to show a japanese only appearance of a western centric character helps balance it out a bit. Mike Jones would be cool as an assist just to pique people's interest in startropics. Also, I believe any Skip LTD. Character got a bit of a boost as well as anyone who appeared in Captain Rainbow at least got a boost for a trophy.

Being based on another culture doesn't affect a characters chances, imo. I believe any series that debuted in Japan and will get some representation. I don't know if that's the result of Nintendo's choosing or Sakurai's preference, but clearly those Eastern exclusives are being favored.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty sure Mike Jones will show up in one way or another more than just being referenced in Brawl's chronicle, but it doesn't help the fact that it was the only reference compared to an actual sticker or trophy. The love must be shown for all games.

Agreed about Skip LTD characters getting potential trophies.

Why do people think Captain Rainbow even has a chance? The game sold poorly IN JAPAN and is virtually unknown here in the west.

If Sakurai wants to specifically appeal to the Japanese audience then Takamaru would be a much better choice.

Same could be said for Lucas and Marth honestly. He seems to be rather wanted in Japan afterall, and would function well as a WTF character over here. Not that I want him, I think he seems rather lame.

Well the fate of Captain Rainbow is still completely unknown till any confirmation/deconfirmation.

I'm just happy that they acknowledge the series. Also I'm surprised at looking at the miiverse comments for today's pic that people actually know Captain Rainbow.

I wonder how many trophies will each game have... This one is probably exclusive to the Wii U version, considering Captain Rainbow is a Wii game.

It seems quite a few people know about this 'Captain Rainbow' thing. Seeing as how it sold poorly in Japan and how most of the west don't even know about it I'm guessing the trophy was put in to show more of Little Mac's history and not so much as any sort of promotion for Captain Rainbow. Heck if something like Captain Rainbow can get a reference maybe we can see some references to the Zelda CDi games

I'm surprised that Captain Rainbow of all things got referenced today. I know that Sakurai is a fan of the game, but I still didn't expect it.

I will say this, I find Captain Rainbow to be a contender now. To be honest, I can see him get added in Smash in some form and I honestly wouldn't be too surprised if he was playable; I'm not expecting it but I can see it happen. This could raise the chances of Takamaru or Lip however…

The best this guy is going to get is as an Assist Trophy. If he was added on the roster though, I wouldn't mind it. I've seen a play through of his game and it's pretty cool.

Nice little nod to Captain Rainbow today. Nice to see character interpretations from other games be represented like this. One thing though, will this be listed as a Punch-Out!! trophy or a miscellanous Nintendo trophy? Also, looks like the first time a plaid pattern is a trophy background.

I don't think you realize just how badly Captain Rainbow sold in Japan. It couldn't sell 7,000 units in it's launch week, and VGCHARTZ has it at just over 10,000 total. You might doubt VGCHARTZ, but the launch week numbers are from Media Create so you should believe those, and since most Japanese games sell half or more of their overall total in their first week, I don't doubt it.

Now Earthbound, which was considered a flop in the West, still sold over 140,000 units IN NORTH AMERICA. Mother 3 was the sequel to a game with an international release that already had representation in Smash, it also pushed almost half a million unites in Japan. Fire Emblem was a long running series when it got it's characters in Smash, and it's over all sales were always decent.

Captain Rainbow is not in the same league as these other franchises. The game reviewed well and has a bit of a cult following, and it is also "Smash Famous" because it's a new Nintendo IP. It is completely possible that the Captain can be a character in Smash, but he is certainly no Marth or Lucas.

Well, funnily enough, a simple picture like this made Captain Rainbow the topic of the day, the awareness of him and the game rose rapidly, so who knows about the future. You took my joke literally and then explained what I meant. "deconfirmed" meant everyone would claim he was deconfirmed before he was actually revealed. I know the roster has been decided already. I'm no scrub

The Wii U trophy screen looks weird. I never used the different backgrounds in Melee. I'm not sure if they were in brawl but I'm glad to see they come back even though I never used them.
