Nate Bhildorf (Localization head) Comments on Brawl

In the recent Nintendo Power issue, Nate Bhildorf commented on what he thinks of Brawl on a side bar in a feature regarding custom stages. He basically said that he prefers to play the game with all items on and dislikes "12 hit combos memorized in Training Mode". Does this comment give insight on why Brawl has smaller, less exaggerated combos. Is Nate propgating the games lack of them?

He doesn't know anything about Melee at all, and he likes trolling competitive players. What else is new.
He also had nothing to do with the gameplay or programming of Brawl, just the translating and localization.

Nate Bhildorf is cool actually. He plays with items on and all that but he also said (in the same article, I believe) that there is no right way to play Brawl.

Every time I've seen Nate speak or write, he's always been trying to distance himself from competitiveness. He says you can play Brawl any way you like, but he's always saying some half-stupid comment about the competitive playstyle.

If you think Nate Bhildorf had any hand in how the game play was changed from Melee to Brawl, you really have no idea what a Localizer actually does.

I know he had no hand in actually making the game, but it still hurts. It hurts to when a representative of Nintendo back hands its most loyal Smash fans. I think I've been blind lately about all the **** competitive players get in terms of the way they play the game. I think Brawl's got everyone heated up again.

No, I know he had no imput in making the game (well, in the start of development, Sakurai might have taken his usual approach and asked some of the Tree House team about things they'd like in the next Smash Bros game). However, he would know how the game is structured and would obviously support it.

I really just think they're making mountains out of molehills.

I mean, for goodness sakes, the original post that started this thread is that Nate didn't want to the game to be "competitive" so he helped to "strip it down".

This reminds me of the the thread (and it exists, trust me), where people thought Sakurai was INSULTING them when he mentioned CANCELING the move at the wrong time would result in MORE lag instead of LESS in the Dedede special moves update.

I posted the article on the forum a while back and got fairly positive responses. I don't think he "bashed" competitive play at all. The way I read it, he made it clear his preference was random, crazy matches with items and a ton of luck. At the same time, he seemed to show some respect to those who do take the time to learn more intricate parts of the game and do those exaggerated "12 hit combos".

He also discussed the importance of different parts of Brawl, such as "advanced" basic techniques like teching and such things that Sakurai had in that update, as well as discussing the importance of knowing each character and the priority of their attacks.

Just to throw it out there, at least he recognizes and even seems to show some respect (even if it's not a lot and not always direct) to hardcore smash players, something that a lot of people outside of the hardcore smash community don't do, especially from Nintendo itself.

What the hell is with all the Bihldorff hate? He's a good guy--chill out. Just because he's not into the "competitive scene" doesn't make him incompetent or an idiot. :ohwell:
