I just don’t see the Switch 2 being announced this year. It’d hurt Switch 1 holiday sales for no real benefits. I guess it might get shareholders excited, but idk if that‘d make more money than the Switch 1 sales they’d lose.

If with the new Nintendo console they mention Luigi's Mansion 4, then I guess the case there will have something to do with museums, but even if this case doesn't have it, I think for originality many ghosts that Luigi will hunt in Luigi's Mansion 4 will are the following ghosts:

Was a robot-themed Ghost already in any of the three LM games?

or an Alien ghost? Just becuas ei like these ideas for a future Luigi's Mansion.

As far as I remember no, but these ideas are just as good. They also made me think of a cyborg ghost (or ghost of cyborg), although I don't know if that's a good idea.

Honestly, the art direction for the next game could go eitherway.

On one hand, you could go back to a more realistic artstyle, similar to Melee and Brawl. Hopefully the colors won't be as muddy or desaturated. I kinda doubt they would do this, and even if they did, I'm sure not everyone would like it.

On the other hand, you could try a cel-shaded artstyle, similar to Jet Set Radio or Guilty Gear. As cool as that would be, it'd probably take up most of the resources, especially if they'd have to recreate the movesets and/or make new movesets in that artstyle, so I'm not sure they'd go for it.

Eitherway, it probably wouldn't sit well for certain characters.

At a certain point in time, building hype for the Switch 2 to assure it has a good launch is more important to them than squeeze remaining sales from the Switch. If the Switch 2 doesn't launch until H2 2025, I'd agree, this early is unnecessary, but if it launches in the first half, then I think that point may come with this console's seventh year on the market, with a fairly light holiday season anyway.

It feels like it's slowly becoming a trend to have painted effects over models and more comic book-styled animation, ever since the success of Spider-Verse. The best example is probably Hi-Fi Rush; That would likely take a lot of work to get right, but it looks really damn good and I'd be all for that sort of cel-shaded animation. Heck, even Ultimate's particle effects are noticeably brighter and more colorful in comparison to previous games; Assuming the next game follows off of that, it seems to me like they want to lean a bit closer to the cel-shaded look

Which IMO clashes with how the art direction for the character models seems to be a compromise between Brawl's hyper-realism and 4's saturated cartooniness. I think the cartoony particles would only be worth keeping around if they try to make the fighters have less detailed textures.

NGL, the realistic art style of Brawl was the thing I liked less of the game.
At the time it was a way to make all the many characters look as homogeneous as possible despite the huge differences in design, but in this modern era we are pretty used to see many artistic styles in the same context, so it's not more needed.
What we need is a simple but colorful style that makes the characters very clear even from afar. And less lazy alt colors for some characters.

I kinda hate Ultimate's cartoony bright particles. Not that they look bad; in fact it's the opposite, they make stuff like Change Shot feel way more powerful than when it was a polygonal model.
But they're just way too dense, they really obfuscate the action a lot when there's too many of them, which, outside of no items 1vs1s, is usually very often. Sometimes I really can't tell what's going on and I find myself trying to move a different character thinking it's mine.

Maybe it's me getting old, or playing too often in portable mode, but anyways I'd like for the effect to get toned down a little.

Smash 4 in general I think looks better with not only the colors but also with how hair looks as well.

For the next game Smash 4 visuals + outline like I said before is what I'd be okay with, but I would like to see a visual overhaul

but Hot Take, I don't think Guilty Gear style visuals would be the best for smash, that style is fantastic, but it succeeds the best with the more cinematic nature of a traditional 2D fighter when compared to a platform fighter. and most importantly, I am sick of people only using that style when talking about what a fighting game should look like,

Hot take, but if they did do a "possession/corruption of the fighters" plot for the next campaign mode, I honestly wouldn't mind if an ultra-realistic "Nintendo hire this man" style was used on the distorted characters (at least for cutscenes) to designate their status. Make the colorful pop of the first and third party characters a deliberate contrast against the near uncanny realism of tainted fighters.

I actually really like the clarity of Ultimate's VFX (the Darkness element actually looks cool and intimidating now instead of looking just kind of dirty and grainy) but I can see where you're coming from in wanting them to be toned down a little. I'd like it if Smash kept a tamer take on Ultimate's VFX going forward.

As sad as it sounds I genuinely think it might come down to being an audience thing. Even in comparison to Pocket Camp, Dr. Mario World had an abysmally small player base.
I think even now, there’s a precedent to make a paid version. Dr. Mario hasn’t had a proper game in years.

inb4 Switch 2 Deluxe version? :174: no I am not high on copium shut up

A lot of newcomer selections are getting posted, but in reality, as long as we got Bandana Waddle Dee in, I'd be very open to most characters.
I feel the exact same way. What's more, if said newcomer roster had both him AND Dixie Kong? There'd be no notes. That'd especially make me open to others.

Animal Crossing Pocket Camp Complete, a full version of Animal Crossing Pocket Camp, is to be released December 3rd, 2024

So... Dragalia Lost, anyone?

I would love it if in the next Luigi's Mansion the ghosts were based on yokais and yureis like some enemies from Mario Land 2 like Bero, Karakara and Kyororo

Why did everything on Ultimate have that white shiny gloss to it anyway? What do you call that, artistically?

Whatever it is, not that again. :iwatadirect:

Ultimate’s design changes honestly downgraded a few characters imo:

:ultdk: and :4dk: are not the same character. I personally prefer the old fur textures.

:ultshulk: is a Ken doll. A literal plastic doll with soulless hollow eyes. I had to drop him from my main list because seeing his repulsing face on every victory screen made me wince in disgust so much I ended up accidentally unlocking his hidden sixth Monado art: Monado Pick-Another-Character.

:4shulk:looks like a normal human person Homs.

Brawl was more on the realistic appearance. Smash 4 and Ultimate was more cartoony and looser to allow creativity from all worlds to show their attitude.
I can say that the current designs from Ultimate and Smash 4 can work, I just don't know how it can be improved or maybe an engine upgrade with same assets? Time will tell........

I actually really like how ultimate looks. Everything in Smash 4 is kinds just... flat in my opinion. As soon as ultimate was shown I liked the new style, I thought it looked like clay (in a good way), and while that opinion has changed, it feels like a good balance to where it doesn't feel too boring, but is generic enough that no characters look out of place in it. I wouldn't complain at all if they chose something more vibrant (as people have mentioned, cel-shading could be great), but if they just improve the current style I'd be perfectly happy.

Same here. There were some characters in Smash 4 that looked pretty terrible. Ganondorf is the main one that comes to mind. His face looked so derpy and his hair looked like plastic. Link had an awesome render but his model wasn’t great.

Yeah, there are parts of Smash 4's graphics I enjoy more than Ultimate's. Donkey Kong getting less vibrant fur is one of them.

Unrelated, we had three NSO Expansion Pass game updates this month (two F-Zero GBA games, Banjo-Tooie, and Shadow Man and Turok 2). While the last two make sense due to the timeframe (it is only a few days before Halloween), I wonder why all three are getting crammed in this month?

Wonder if it has anything to do with those "future plans" for NSO they mentioned awhile back.

Shadow Man and Turok 2 were certainly a shadowdrop I was not expecting, especially IIRC Turok 2 and 3 have an HD version on the Switch e-shop. Wonder if that means Turok 3 on NSO might happen at some point.

Conker feels like it will happen at some point. It'd also be great if the original Resident Evil 2 and Castlevania Legacy of Darkness were put on the NSO.

So there was discussion earlier about a Switch 2 announcement this week, and I wanted to share some fascinating insights from Kit and Krysta for why that's probably not happening

Dot points on what they say. Basically it's a very suboptimal time to announce something because:

  • Don't want to butcher Switch Christmas sales
  • Nintendo does not look at investor meetings that way. Much more big picture
  • The biggie. The US Election is going to take attention away from any sort of announcement right now.

I truly don't think Nintendo cares about the US election

Like I know this country likes to make it's problems everyone else's problem too, but I don't think that applies here.
The people who used to work there and was part of the team that helps decide when things are announced says otherwise. Kit and Krysta were somewhat high profile former employees. They know more than most regarding the inner workings of Nintendo

While true, their words also are not gospel, they say so themselves.

But as I posted my original I do remember that Nintendo has changed release dates and stuff based on non-Japan world events (They are pretty much all related to Advanced Wars though) but they never stopped for the other US election in the Switch era and they don't stop for any other world election. Not impossible but unlikely
