That's not unique to American cultures, even Japan has heavily edited shows in the past. For instance, my favorite example would be
Beast Wars, which had so many different changes that some of the characters were almost flat out unrecognizable compared to their American counterparts. Some of these examples were made more "Japanese" in a sense like how Tigatron became a ronin parody rather then his original personality in the American version.
Really, the thing to remember about media is that when it crosses over to another country, there is always the possibility that it gets changed around for the country it's trying to cater to, sometimes to a great extent. American examples are the most commonly heard about partially because we're the most aware of them as a western society, but it's not something that only Americans go through. There are going to be examples of media getting heavily edited in other countries that we will never hear about as a result of where we live, and it's not going to be ever exclusive to one country as long as there are political, cultural or other such reasons that drive how certain shows or other media are localized.
