Problems with grabbing

I have found it difficult to perform grab attacks in SSBB and was wondering if any one was in the same boat as me. Now, just for the record I never played SSBM and my comparision comes from my experiences maining ness in SSB64. I know ness was nerfed in melee so i assume those who mained ness in melee may not have an issue with this, but I wanted to know if I was the only one having this issue. His grabs were a great KO move for me in SSB64 so I feel a little gimped in this version that I can't execute them like I would like.

Maybe I just need a little more practice.

thanks for the replies. His forward grab is really pathetic but the back grab still has good KO potential. The main point of my post was how difficult I found to even perform a grab. Seems like I would either be just a little to far or to close and just go through the opponent. I think it probably has more to do with me getting used to the new controls.

Forward Throw is great, don't underestimate it. It has stable knockback.

The thing you have to realize is that the new pivot grab system forces you to take a step when you're dashing and you attempt to grab. On one hand, this increases your grab range, but it can also make you overstep your target. If you are dashing and don't want to do a pivot gab, what you need to do is do a shield cancelled run(press R or L in the middle of a dash) and then press A. You'll stop and do a grab there right, and also potentially powershield any attack that would've come right before that. Might help you with your range issues.

on the other hand if you want the extended range get the timing down it really does help as both can be useful.

Ness's forward throw mainly is useful for getting an opponent off the edge for edgeguarding, and his back throw is a solid KO move.

as for grabbing, he has less grab range than in SSB64, but more than in Melee.

I had a similar problem with the new system at first; but you just have to give it some time.

Playing the bloody game practically nonstop the last few days has helped.

I was having the same problem. Then I realized that I keep trying to grab, assuming that Ness has the same grab range as Melee Ness. However, in Brawl, his range is much bigger (as stated previously in this thread) and requires you to grab sooner than you would grab in Melee.

In other words, grab earlier. It feels wrong at first, but when you start doing dthrow to fair combos, it'll feel oh so right.

I'm unclear whether the massive powa of his Bthrow was nerfed from melee to here. Last time I checked, his was ranked pretty highly among deadliest Bthrows.
