Defiance
Smash Apprentice
There's been a lot of discussion on the defensive nature of brawl, the campiness, the boring gameplay etc. and how it's future is going down the toilet. There's also been much discussion(not so much now, but in the past) about what makes the best smash player, someone who mastered all the characters fairly well, or someone who mastered only one, and is essentially unbeatable with only that char. So, if someone could master, or atleast be proficient with each character in brawl, they could possibly hit the random button and do well competetively with any character.
In the past, tournaments and competetive play has been largely "choose one character and fight with him/her/it" I hear very little about random character tournaments which is sad because i really like the idea. I'm a casual player and while maining Lucario, I play a lot of other characters for a bit of variety and fun. I use some of the advanced techs and mindgames, so i consider myself a fairly good player, but not being competetive i am out of my element here.
So why aren't there any random tournaments?
Pros:
1 Adds much more variety to the game
2 Can make games much more interesting depending on users playstyles and what characters they get
3 Prevents campy and boring strategies from being rampant throughout tournies. Sure they'll still be around, but only if someone randoms a campy character and follows through with said strategy.
4 From some perspectives it shows a greater mastery and understanding of the game since you'd have to understand the game as a whole more than just one character.
Cons:
1 Leads to a very random environment, which people don't seem to like.
2There are 35 characters(39 with alts) and mastering or even attaining proficiency with that many characters would be extremely difficult and time consuming.
3The true mastery of a player may not shine through if they get "bad picks"
4Even with random characters, defensive strategies will still reign superior simply due to the defensive nature of game.
So these are just some pros/cons i could come up with off the top of my head, but there are many many more. It comes down to that classic debate again, what makes the best smasher? Concentrated skill, or flexibility and understanding?
If the future of brawl is going to be short as some would suggest, due to boring defensive tournies, why not try and spice up the competetive environment with random character tournaments. I'd like to hear some opinions of competetive players especially, but discuss discuss!
P.S. If you couldn't tell, i'm on the side of the random character tournament, but i've never played competetively and will most likely never be at that stage of gameplay. I'm also an avid believer of the player who can win with any character as being the best. These are just my thoughts on how to stop brawl from dying from a malaise of boredom.
