I've been noticing recently that I spot and roll dodge way too much, and I'm starting to get severely punished for it, especially when I use the heavier characters such as Ike. I even roll when my opponent is out of my reach, then I get dash grabbed D:

What ideas do you guys have to stop my heavy dodge usage?

Run more. >_>
Seriously, brawl is 30% habit. Just start doing things you don't normally do to improve your game, and it'll improve your game in general

You can also play a few games with your shield disabled. Do this by going into controller settings and reassigning your shield button to something else. This will prevent you from being able to roll. Get used to playing without rolling. Then go back and turn your shield back on and slowly work it back into your game.

Try and beat level 1-3 computers as many times as you can without losing a stock. It somewhat tests your level of spacing and how much you're in control of your character. Don't do flashy stuff, just do what works.

Whenever I feel like I built up a bad habit, I usually do this.

The shield itself is pretty integral though. :ohwell:

Play friendlies with people, and every time you roll (into) your opponent, suicide immediately.

Rolling into your opponent is a bad habit. Rolling away is fine (usually).

Rolling, if your opponent already puts up with opponents who like to roll, ends up being punishable. I can't tell you how many times I've hit my friend with d-air because he'd roll in a certain direction. I'd follow him and hit him with d-air. I've done this more than once, and I'm wondering when he'll learn not to roll so much. Characters who can roll fast, however, are a bit more tricky. If the character you main doesn't have a very good roll, learn not to roll, or just minimize it.

True, but simply walking or running away from an attack gives you more options to choose from. Walking is actually preferable if you had to choose between walking and running. If you shield and you fail to shield at the time the hit comes in contact, then you're pushed away and your shield remains a bit, even if you let go.

Yeah, don't play CPU's. They form bad habits, and good players will observe and exploit your bad habits. Staying unpredictable is one of the keys to winning.

As someone said above, disabling your shield helps you break that habit.
