Quote stolen from Gimpyfish62's thread:

Competition is the core of gameplay.

There is no doubt that competition makes games more
engaging, but depending on the person, competition may create different
reactions.

An example: a game is built with such depth that it brings to a
player's mind memories of defeat. As a game designer, I can't ignore
this possibility. If, in a multiplayer fighting game, only the winner
feels good and the other challengers get no such feeling, then there is
really no joy at all. No matter how people play, I want everyone to be
happy! Is this asking for too much?

The game I worked on, Smash Bros.,
is a fighting game, but keeping in mind such reasoning, I set out to
make sure the game did not over-emphasize the notions of victory and
defeat.
I won't go into too much detail, but the game was built so that
if a player is strong in combat, just doing the same thing over and
over again won't guarantee they'll always win over their opponents.
There is a mechanism of accidents occurring, balanced so that the
game's progress and results falter easily. Whether you win or lose, you
enjoy a hearty laugh, and move on to the next round. I think this makes
quite a good game.

It’s not like I think that serious competition is not interesting. It’s
good to have equals fighting intensely. Yet, I understand quite well
the feelings of children who just enjoy hitting a motionless opponent
in things like a training mode.

I don't watch sports much and I don't find them particularly exciting.
Whichever player or team wins, I always end up thinking "well done,
everyone!" I'm not really cheering for or supporting any one team. If
there was something like the World Cup going on, I'd be inclined to
cheer for Japan and would be excited, but if the opponent was putting
his heart into it, I'd feel that both were the same.
I stumbled upon this fact while discussing the Smash Bros. series with a friend.

ValorousVisitor (11:05:09 PM): And Sakurai is a communist!
(11:06:34 PM): Hahahahaha!
ValorousVisitor (11:06:38 PM): He IS!
(11:06:47 PM): Because he doesn't believe in inequality?
ValorousVisitor (11:06:51 PM): Yup.
ValorousVisitor (11:06:56 PM): Everyone should be equal.
ValorousVisitor (11:07:00 PM): Everyone should win.
(11:07:03 PM): Well if that's the case why did he make MK overpowered?
ValorousVisitor (11:07:12 PM): Everyone should use MK equally.
(11:07:19 PM): Hahahahahahahaha!

He placed random mechanics into the gameplay to prevent a consistent winner. Tripping, items, Peach's random Bo-bombs, Luigi's misfires, Dedede's random items, stage effects, etc.

Why? Because if Sakurai can't win, competition sucks! Communist.

Sakurai is naive

The joy in winning and sadness in losing go hand-in-hand; this is a dichotomy

"There is no sun without shadow, and it is essential to know the night" - Albert Camus

Sakurai tried in vein to create a game without shadow

I lol'd...

of course, I stopped taking Melee seriously a long time ago...
Brawl is the same way.

I'll play competitively and I'll play my best, but I don't really care if I win or lose anymore.

Communism indeed! It sounds like a good idea at first, but when you actually put it into effect, everyone hates you.

Right here, not quite now
Well, Mario Kart is similar.

"Yes, I've finally worked hard to become really good at this game! I'm winning! Wait, what's that? No, it can't be! IT CAN'T BE!" *gets hit by blue shell* "All right, there's still one lap left, I'll just make sure I use my full potential..." *gets run over by bullet bill, person who was previously 12th wins*

I'm pretty sure someone made this joke 5 months ago and they didn't make a new thread about it.

What does it have to do with Communism?
Um...everyone should be equal? The basic idea of Communism is for everyone to be in the same class. Everyone is on an equal level. And when it comes to working, everyone gets equal compensation.

Same thing here. The game is set up so no one person has more of a likelihood of winning than another. Work-wise, everyone gets equal compensation -- everyone pretty much ends up at the same skill level.

Just like in real life, communism doesn't work here. Life is boring if you can never advance in life, if you're always equal with someone else. Competitive Smash is boring if you can never have more of a chance of beating someone. And while everyone being just as good as one another seems like it would be good, it's not in reality. Because one person puts in hundreds of thousands of hours to get better at the game and they get as much of a boost as someone who puts in a few hours. At some point, there is a slight separation of skill, but not as much.

But wow, I never even thought about this that way before. This type of mentality IS communism. Sakurai has this mentality. Thus, Sakurai = Communist.
Good comparison.

Well, there you go, that explains everything.

So tripping was put in so that EVERYONE wins? BAH, that's too easy, they should make it so that when you kill someone you both lose a stock, now, THAT is EQUALITY!
He needed to maintain the illusion of competition for people to buy his game.

Yeah, he had to make a profit out of all of the unsuspecting competitive people.

I know but still its just sad that people may think like that. It wouldnt suprise me to see some melee people say they agree. I dont have anything against melee but some would say that

Sakurai screwed up. It's OUR responsibility to make sure our little bros/sisters/etc. have fun playing the game. Ofc we take it easy on little kids and all that other stuff. The problem is that it sounds like Sakurai is really making things too easy on whiners who are willingly throwing themselves into competitive play and getting their **** rocked.

oh well. ;o

"feelings of children" should also be highlighted in red
which explains why brawl isn't so great in the technical
department.

Not for "play" Smash Bros, for his mindset around creating Smash Bros. Seriously, look at his mindset when creating the game. It's not "sad" to think like that, look at the evidence instead of saying "O MAI GAWD SEW SAD!"

Look at my last post. The facts line up. We're not saying "He's a commie because we don't like him!" We're saying, wow, look at his mindset here. He wants everyone to be equal, to set things up specifically so everything is. That's like...a communist mindset.

Call us sad if you want. Just look at his mindset and take the facts, and OBJECTIVELY look at it, instead of going in saying "BAWWW SAKURAI IS AWESOME BAWWWW BRAWL HATERS ARE MEAN BAWWWWWWWWWW".

yes but were talking about a game though not real life
i understand that. winning and losing is a real thing - sure you can
joke around and stuff but people are different. wouldn't it been smart of sakurai to
put a button saying "enable/disable tripping" that would save so many headaches
right about now.

Still didn't convince me.

Wanting to make a game so that it can please the most people , thus getting more money for making it is true capitalism.

This whole thread is nothing but false illusions about communism.

well melee has made buckets of money and it never was forced to be fair.
sakurai isn't communist nor is he capitalist. hes trying to play god.
the costumer has the last word if the game is fair or not when
they see fit.

Technically its pleasing less people then it would if it had followed Melee and 64's example.

It's his mindset on HOW we should play that makes him a Commie (lol).
