I thought the screen wasn't much smaller... It looks about the same size length wise... I could be wrong, though. I've never touched my brother's 2DS.

I'd say yes. It could be smaller, but you can just make the outlines thicker if that turns out to be a problem.

Having played Smash on an XL and OG system, I can tell you the screen size does not matter. I had zero issue playing on an OG.

The Nintendo 3DS & Nintendo 2DS have the same exact screen sizes.

I was going to play Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS on my original 3DS, but I ended up having more money, so I bought that fancy Zelda: Link Between Worlds Nintendo 3DS XL last month just in-case so I'd have a bigger screen to enjoy the first version of Smash 4 on...and I'd been wanting to buy an XL for a long while anyway.

Both the original 3DS and 2DS (though the latter actually has one big screen from what I've heard) have the same screen sizes. I think it won't be a problem playing Smash Bros. on those.

Anybody who's played Shounen Jump All-Stars on the DS (which actually had a smaller screen than the 3DS) can tell you that fighting games can definitely work on small screens. I think we're worrying about this too much, personally.

If you have eye issues, I'd recommend upgrading to the 3DS XL anyway. If you don't have eye issues, the 3DS/2DS should be fine.
