I'm a bit new to the smash bros competitive scene, but I think meta-game encompasses, all of the techniques, inner-workings of the character's as well as the game physics and mind games. Those three factors make up a competitive games "meta game" which separates a casual player from a competitive one. If this is incorrect, someone please correct me.

The meta-game works on the basis of the popular and available techniques. A very good player will have a strategy that beats most players, but an opponent may develop a counter-strategy to defeat them. Between the two of them, they play generally different games than the average game, and have their own mini chess-like game to play within the game itself.

The meta-game is an extension of these mini-games; it develops from players playing against players, and developing strategies to beat other players. Generally, the most popular tactics are tested in tournaments and good players develop strategies to beat these tactics, which disseminate down to the rest of the scene and become popular, and again, counters are found to them, thus repeating the cycle, and creating a meta-game.

@Condor: Teching?

That's known as Ukemi on the Dojo. Press shield to quickly recover from knockback on a surface.

When someone techs your hit, you chase them.

To be more specific, let's say you hit someone with a forward smash that sends the opponent flying, but not far enough to knock them off the stage. As they land, they will usually tech roll to try to get away or to better position themselves.

What you can do is predict which way they'll tech roll and try to intercept them by running after them or using a move like Ganon's side-B. That's tech chasing.

EDIT: My example was bad. Tech chasing works a lot better if your opponent lands somewhat near you or if you use a move that knocks them to the ground too fast for them to tech. Tech chasing is essentially rushing down on an opponent teching or getting up. It's the closest thing to a wakeup game in Smash.
