I'm having a serious issue with Smash Bros. Melee right now, and I have a feeling the same thing will happen in brawl. kk, here goes.

Ok, I'm fighting Captain Falcon on Lv. 9 with Fox. I try to run towards the enemy, but it takes a second after I mash the joystick to run forward, which I feel is really lame. I keep holding the button to the right, I press A. Dash Attack. Woo. Ok, so to perform a tilt, do I have to literally stop moving and press right on the joystick and A at the same time? Cuz it seems all I'm doing is moving right and smash attacking. And it takes FOREVER for me to move after I actually do the tilt. Is there an easier way to perform a tilt rather than stopping for a second and barely tapping the control stick forward and pressing A, which in turn causes me to move forward a little bit? If I don't stop and do it, I ALWAYS perform either a Smash Attack or a Dash Attack. I'd greatly appreciate the help. Sorry for being such a n00b.

Btw, is there such thing as a back tilt? If there is, it looks awfully similar to a forward tilt.

Also, is there a way to get rid of post-dash lag?

Yeah.. when youre standing still, quickly move the joystick left or right BEFORE pressing A and you'll do a tilt. Is it really that hard?

Uhm, quickly? What?

A tilt is what it sounds like -- just tilt the analog stick left or right slightly, and press A.

I dunno, it seems like he's having problems with dashing instead of tilting, so I thought maybe if he tried doing it quickly, it'd work for him.

Eh.

The most reliable way to do it (well, at least for me) requires a lot of precise control on your joystick. Namely, if you can easily put your character into a walk animation, you can do a tilt, since pressing A anytime you are walking will result in a forward tilt.

Up-tilt's are a little trickier since you can accidentally jump, which can throw a lot of timing off, but it's essentially the same amount of joystick control required to walk, it's just that nothing will happen.

In Brawl, up-tilts will potentially be a lot easier because jumping by jamming the joystick up can be turned off. But forward tilt will still require a bit of precise control.

Oh, and down-tilts are easy as pie, of course.

I like this answer. I guess I'm just going to have to work on my game a bit in time for this tourney. I can usually beat level 9s, but this has always plagued me. Thanks again for the good answer.

Another question. When's a good opportunity to use a tilt attack rather than a smash attack on your opponent?

Tilt attacks usually come out faster and have a longer range. They are useful for disrupting your opponent's movement and racking up quick damage with multiple tilts in a row. For instance, chaining together a bunch of Samus Front tilts is really easy and can be used to control your opponent all over the stage.

Is this a for truth thread or a joke thread?
Anyways, all you do is tilt your joystick a direction and hit A. Profit.

You have to be standing still to do a tilt (assuming you don't wavedash).

As for the canceling post dash lag part.

If I'm understanding you're question right, all you have to do while dashing in a direction is just crouch.

That should make you stop and out of that you can do smashes/tilts/specials or whatever.

Not sure if it works that way in Brawl but, you were asking about Melee.

To do a tilt just don't push the stick all the way to the edge. Same way you avoid up-jumping. It just takes practice to break the habit of pushing the stick as hard as you can all the time.

The usefulness of a tilt over smashes varies with each character.

Take Captain Falcon for example (I use him the most, so I know him the best). His up-tilt is an extremely easy way to edge-guard and has awesome range while his upsmash is kind of situational and difficult to get an opponent to go all the way inside for an effective double hit. His forward tilt has safer range and lag than his front smash and can be spammed at least twice on low percentages (0-20%), but his fsmash is a really powerful and surprising KOer. His down-tilt is laggy as hell ans is only useful when the opponent is at a fairly high percentage and you want a bit of a breather, but his down-smash, while a bit laggy, has great range and is fairly powerful and useful at any percentage (I use it a lot more for kills than his fsmash, although, in all actuality Falcon should really be doing most of his kills with his knee anyway).

Compare that to Roy. Again, his Upsmash is kinda like Falcons only that it is far worse for hitting enemies on the ground in front of you. His utilt is very quick and has relatively good range, so it's good for comboing. Upsmash is only really useful for when some idiots trying to dair right above you (it's also really good for catching nooby space animals Up+B off-guard). His down-tilt is an EXCELLENT combo starter whereas his down-smash is an abysmal KOer but good for putting a bit of distance between you and your opponent on either side, making it a good sweep move. I almost never use his front tilt because his Sword Dance works better, but I use his fsmash quite often because it's his most reliable way to KO.

You just kinda...have to try out every character's tilts vs. smashes to see which ones work when and for what. Like Samus' down-tilt is way more useful that her d-smash imo, but I don't know too much about her.

You can map all your tilts to C-stick in Brawl. So if you're having trouble... That's what I did for my controls. And you can still SHFF u-air with c-stick, I have to, I can never make my fingers do jump + up a + down on analog. I also stopped up from being jump, which makes up tilts easier on your fingers.
