Skype: Our substitute for voice chat

I believe that being able to communicate with whoever you're playing with is a key element of enjoyment for a lot of games. The Super Smash Bros. series has been one of those games. Unfortunately, voice chat wasn't apparently possible in Brawl on the Wii. I thought about it, and I remembered a program that my friend was showing me once: Skype. Skype is a free way to communicate via voice chat with whoever. I already picked up a headset to get ready for online brawling (you can get some headsets for under $5). Right now, I would like to propose that Skype become the "official" SWF brawl voice chat program. Let me know what you guys think!

My Skype name: NESJake

My Brawl friends are all over AIM, MSN, and YIM. I've never even looked at Skype before, though I have heard it mentioned in passing.

I personally will be using a cell phone to talk and perhaps set up matches via normal instant messengers. I'm not into hearing random people from the net on voice chat though, I get enough of that from WoW and hearing my roommate's Ventrilo server that is packed full of squeaky-voiced, androgynous little brats. Ugh.

Problem for me is that my computer is halfway across my apartment from the tv... so I'm gonna have to invest in a wireless headset or something... which might suck.

As much as voice communication would be cool, I think IRC, smashboards, AIM, cellphones, and other messaging systems will do the job quite effectively.

I'm personally a fan of using Skype after using it for SMYN.

can't really type efficiently during brawls, and not everyone has unlimited minutes or wants to hand out their phone number online. Not everyone has to do this. The purpose of this thread was to propose the "standard" way of communication between long-distance smashers for those who want to use voice chat.

i really dont think that exchanging your cell phone number with a whole bunch of people is a good idea. Ii would definitley prefer skype over cell phone for random people. Unless im playing my friends of course.

Is Skype like Vent or something?
That's a simple way of putting it, yes. But it's like AIM/MSN, in that you call directly to someone elses handle. You can create conversations, though (multiple people in one chat room). I use this program sometimes, but when I do, it's really nice.

Now, would I use it for Smash? No. No no no no no no no. My computer is in a different room then my Wii, and I refuse to play my Wii in the computer room (cramped, small TV, gets hot in the summer). Now if I had a laptop...

its inconvenient when your computer isn't next to your wii or you don't have one of those fancy bluetooth headsets.

I just downloaded it and all I can say is wow. We were just going to use Xbox private chat but this is way better. It has a really good message system and it is really easy to add a friend. plus you can voice chat with other members or call phones. I think this would be a good way to get a lot of people on your friends list and it will make gamebattles matches so much easier. All I could think about before was how we would deal with telling the other person about lag or wrong game settings in clan battles. Now all we need is to buy a USB mic and all ingame problems can be taken care of. This is genius and a way of saying "take that nintendo, you cant keep us quiet."

Skype to me is a pretty crappy substitute. It's worse than not talking at all for me. You're going to have to register so many people it's not worth it.

its not a very good idea, you will have more lag this way.
Ha, maybe if you're on a dial up modem. And seeing as how you can't connect to the Wii via dial up (or at least by any normal means), I think most people should be fine...

Using Skype for voice chat is a good idea, though I'd rather just use it for setting up a match in a chat room, since my headset can't reach over to where my Wii is at.

I downloaded Skype a couple of weeks ago for this very reason. I think it'll be pretty handy for Brawl.

people have to realize this is for talking in game and not for setting up matches...
