SUPER SMASH BROS. BRAWL SMASHES NINTENDO SALES RECORDS

Wii Game Sells at a Rate of More than 120 per Minute

REDMOND, Wash., March 17, 2008 – After just one week on store shelves, Super Smash Bros.® Brawl for Wii has become the fastest-selling video game in Nintendo of America's history. Since its launch on March 9, the feature-packed fighting action game has sold more than 1.4 million units in the United States, including more than 874,000 on March 9 alone. It has sold at a rate of more than 120 units per minute between launch and March 16.

"Super Smash Bros. Brawl has made the leap from video game to cultural phenomenon," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Game reviewers and the public alike praise its fun game play and extensive, inventive content."

Super Smash Bros. Brawl features a nearly limitless variety of options for players. Dozens of classic Nintendo characters like Mario™ and Pikachu® are joined by industry icons like Sonic The Hedgehog™ and Metal Gear's Solid Snake for all-out four-player battles. The endless customization keeps players coming back for more. The previous game in the series, Super Smash Bros.® Melee, became the best-selling Nintendo GameCube™ game of all time with more than 7 million copies sold worldwide, so it's no surprise to see this latest installment racking up record numbers.

"It's important to remember," Dunaway said, "that we have lots more fun on the way: Upcoming titles like Mario Kart® Wii and Wii Fit™ will keep our momentum going strong."

Mario Kart Wii launches April 27 with the Wii Wheel™, which lets players drive their speedy karts with the intuitive feel of a wireless steering wheel. It's another "bridge" game like Wii Sports™ that lets video game novices and veterans play and have fun together. Wii Fit arrives May 19 with the Wii Balance Board™ to combine fun and fitness. It lets users track their progress over time, and it's an easy way for every member of the family to keep active and play together.

Remember that Wii features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other Wii features, visit Wii.com.

Brawl received one of Nintendo's most elaborate marketing campaigns so I have no idea what you're talking about.
How many videos and commercials did Nintendo release for North America? Around 1 or 2, and I never saw a commercial for Brawl on TV. In Japan, there were like 7.

In America, there weren't any official demos of the game until the day of the release, and i'm pretty sure Japan got it a few weeks earlier.

It was heavily advertised in canada, I saw several commercials of it on primetime hours on a few popular channels. So at least where I live, it was advertised a lot.

There were 2 commercials and a tournament held weekly up until release with about 200+ participants at each. Also featured at a public convention (E for All) which Nintendo NEVER does.

Look. Brawl has great marketing. Unless they went all out like Halo 3 (don't think it's needed), this was great. I've seen it plastered all over the place. Not sure about TV as I stopped watching TV long ago.

Wow, that's a lot of money, and wii fit is beating H3 and galaxy? Wii Fit = Pathetic, but still, amazing job with that money, ninty must be very very pleased.
Mario Galaxy has sold more than Wii Fit. Halo 3 obviously doesn't sell well in Japan. Don't judge Wii Fit without playing it.

Wii Fit sucks. =|

Anyhow, that's still a LOT for nintendo, even with brawl's sales that's a lot of cash, and to think they are able to hold mass load production like this, wow.

Also more lag. Nintendo needs to upgrade there server!
There is no server to update, Nintendo's wifi goes through Gamespy's server in the form of peer to peer connection.

Not as fast-selling as some mainline Pokemon games, but this time they counted each version separately so Smash looked better and their sales seemed more significant. Gotta learn to look past the PR!

Yeah, Brawl hasn't done as well as some of the Pokemon games, and I don't think it's gonna sell over 20 million copies or anything, but I must say, it's doing terrifically so far. I wonder how long it'll be until it reaches 5 million and overtakes Twilight Princess.

lol, i'll probably get flamed for this, but I'm hoping it only sells up to 5 million max.

So that nintendo could realize that deeper gameplay can lead to more sales overall in the long run, like Melee had.

But that probably won't happen.

Ah, but you bought it anyway so you probably aren't helping ;) The milestone I'm referring to that will be reached next week is actually Brawl's Japan numbers surpassing Melee's lifetime total in Japan (1,498,000). Wii's much larger userbase makes it impossible for Melee to outsell Brawl I would say. Brawl also has much more hype behind it than Melee.

Cause deeper gameplay really matters to new players , casuals and scrubs :ohwell:

(Which, make up a vast majority of smash players. Yay for being catered to! )

Brawl wasn't advertised a lot where I am at (Southeast United States) and I was able to go in BestBuy and buy it easily a week after it came out, tons where still on the shelf. Why didn't Nintendo advertise a lot here.

Funny thing was, Madden is the hardest Wii game to find in my area.

More copies of Japanese Brawl sold than Japanese Melee already??? Does that seem ridiculous and proposterous to anyone else? You're telling me one of the most popular games for the gamecube has sold less than 2 million copies in the 6 years its been on the market?

Yes that's what I'm telling you. In Japan, Melee sold 1,498,000 copies. Games selling on and on way after release is a relatively new thing in Japan. Usually, games would be on the top list for a month at most and drop off. Usually only the first week or two. Nintendo changed that with the DS and Wii targeting more casual and non-gamers.

Games selling well past the first month really want a more western thing.

If you wanna know, I believe Melee sold 6 - 7 million worldwide. I don't have the numbers in front of me right now, but I'll say so when we pass it!
