So an upsmash overrules a down air every single time?

I've been noticing that every single time no matter who im using (with the exception of link so far) that when i'm in the air and i come back down i keep getting up smashed. Aren't i supposed to get the smash in as well? Or is it like a rock paper scissors thing where upsmashes beat down airs all the time? Did this happen in melee as well?

It's priority and hitboxes, just like always.

You have to know what moves outprioritize others, and you have to know when and how your hitboxes come out.

Basically...
Hitboxes - the areas of an attack which deal damage
also can be used to describe areas on a character which receive damage (in FPS), but since in SSB characters receive damage all over - no point.
A disjointed hitbox is a hitbox which is seperate from the character ie. Marth's sword, Mario's Fsmash fire. Advantages of a disjointed hitbox is of course that you can't take damage on them, and they go thorugh more stuff (in melee, marth's Dtilt could be used to poke through the stage).

Priority- when two moves connect at the same time

which one is applied first. Work the rest out. If the Dair you are doing has a hitbox which connects with the enemy before their upsmash does, then your Dair wins. But if they connect at the same time., it's the one with the highest priority. Which, in many cases, may be upsmash.

Exactly what he said. Some moves beat out other moves by having higher priority. Also, disjointed hitboxes (like swords and other non body part hitboxes) can stop non djhitboxes by hitting the attacker first, knocking him out of the attack.
