Super Smash Bros. Final Video Presentation: Dec. 15

The time has come: "Catch the final video presentation dedicated to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U on Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. PT. Masahiro Sakurai will provide details on Cloud and more in this worldwide broadcast." This will be the final Smash presentation we receive according to this official Nintendo announcement.

Outside of Cloud, what will be covered in the direct? Will we learn about the Smash Ballot at last? New stages? Costumes? Does this mean that we will soon enter the era of the final patch? Start the speculation in the comments below and stay tuned for any breaking updates on the presentation!

I am ready for this Direct!
...But announcing it 6 days before it happens? Nintendo... you just want to see the world burn, don't you?

It's important to note that this they are saying this is the last *specific* Smash direct. There's nothing stopping them announcing more Smash news as part of the regular Directs.

He said the 16th for the US though.
The leaker said the 16th, and nothing else from what I can tell. Could of ment in US, might've not. It's safe right now and still hasn't made any big claims either.

The official NA Twitter and FB pages said the 15th. Makes no sense to do a "Worldwide" Direct on different days, anyway.
Same universal time, but different timezones and thus different days. It's really happening on the 15th in the Americas and the 16th in Europe and Japan.

All the official posts about this broadcast have said the same thing, "The final broadcast DEDICATED to Smash Bros." It may or may not be the last wave of DLC but there's nothing to indicate that it is, we've only had a few dedicated Smash broadcasts at all and most of the characters were revealed in other ways like normal Directs. I'm not being overly optimistic but they're really just saying no more Smash Directs, not no more DLC.

From what I'm hearing over on NeoGAF, he later clarified (in response to someone in the Smash Brothers thread) that he meant the 16th for the US. Sorry if that wasn't clear enough.

Correction. It happens at 11.00 P.M in France.
... Through it means some people will have it around 3.00 A.M. I feel kinda bad for them :((

I know that, which means Tansut was very likely wrong or he's making stuff up.

That's my guess at least.
Oh, I didn't know we were referring to any leaks or anything, pardon me.

I'd thought we'd stopped giving Direct leaks any credence whatsoever though, because they've literally never been correct.

Don't start people down the road of thinking this. While you're technically correct, I feel they wouldn't just use other Directs to announce new Smash stuff. If they say this is the last one, I guarantee it means Smash is going out with a bang.

Sakurai's not going to be working on Sm4sh forever. If he says this isn't the end, fine, but if he does, don't theorize new stuff because it probably isn't happening. They keep saying how this is the final Smash presentation. They wouldn't do that if this wasn't the finale.

Mario Kart 8 has obviously reached its finale, so it's only a matter of time until Smash 3DS and Smash Wii U both meet that same fate as well.

Until they actually say "There will be no more Smash news", I'm not ruling out more Smash news in the future as part of other Directs. IIRC there's only been two specific Smash directs (this one, and the one where Ryu/Roy was announced) and all the other Smash news has been part of the regular Directs.

It makes sense if they don't want to make Smash 4 a major focus moving forward...after all the game is a year old now and they don't necessarily want it stealing the spotlight from their other new games coming out. But I'd say it's definitely possible we'll be seeing more Smash news in the normal Directs, even if it's only small updates like new Mii costumes or balance patches.

Finally this useless long drag ends. Just like how you invited a new Smash character like Cloud, do the same thing to the last two characters Nintendo. Leave the Brawl cast alone like you did with adding Cloud. Embrace something new for a change (since Smash-4 isn't any "appetizing"). Thanks.

The stream of content may be ending, but a few more patches are likely. Especially after the silly Diddy glitch sprang up....

The one where they revealed Greninja was also a Smash Direct.

But my main point is not to expect any more characters after Tuesday unless Sakurai says otherwise. I don't even expect balance patches or Mii costumes. But that remains to be seen, obviously.

Some people are acting like this is the end of DLC, but that's not exactly the case. It's just the last video presentation specifically dedicated to Smash. Like they could still have a trailer for something down the line in a general direct.
Yeah, the wording is actually very clear on that:

This doesn't rule out anything for the future of SSB4 DLC, just that it'll happen in other Nintendo directs, just like Cloud's announcement did.

If this was the END of all DLC, I'm sure they'd tell us that instead.

Also, they'd be fools to not continue to release Mii costumes because that's literally printing money. I kinda can't help but get the feeling like this isn't the end of DLC characters, either (or stages).

After all, why stop now? Yeah, balance is an issue, but it'd be MORE of an issue if SSB4 was a competitive fighting game first and a party game second, but it's entirely the other way around.

So yeah, why shut down the money faucet now? Plus, I know for a fact that the only reason some of the Mii costumes get bought by some people is because they bundle them in a package with new fighters and stages. The bundles with new fighters are HUGELY appealing...

  • Ability to hack game and play hacks online
  • More Mewtwo buffs
  • Ability to use Miis on with anyone; kids (literal) need to man/woman up

  • No more darkened-out dresses (this is very patronizing for adults)
  • Zelda Buffs
  • Return of Hoo-Hah (since now everybody has their own combos)
  • DK Bair changed to a slow, strong punch.
  • Streaks on attacks to be an optional feature.
  • Big/Slow characters actually becoming slow
  • Playable Master Hand (just to lighten the mood)
  • Original mode (for those who like Smash 4 as it is)

  • Gritty mode (read: Brawl mechanics mode)
  • Alpha mode (read: Melee mode)
Notes: when I say "kids", I'm referring to actual children.

Roy and Ryu's announcement happened in a Smash-only Direct though.

On topic, I maintain that people are reading too much into the wording. This is more likely the last we'll see.

People still asking for Snake even though he's honestly impossible. He's too mature for Smash 4 and before you say he was in Brawl, Brawl was Teen rated while Smash 4 is rated E10. You can tone down an M rated character for a Teen rating but trying to tone them down for E10 just won't turn out well. Anyways I'm excited for the presentation, hope it's worth it.

Yeah, I fixed that because I was trying to remember how that came about.

Lucas and Cloud have both been announced in general directs, though.

Again, with how much we know Nintendo loves money, I not so sure... ;)

I'm hoping for snake iceclimbers Wolf #Freewolf ylink(like we need a third link) and Pichu(well great that makes pokemon top spot. To be honest I hope for Wolf and Lyn.Can't wait the hype train is real.#mybodyisready

Hmm. Gotta pay attention to the close wording. Final dedicated broadcast means that it's still possible for future directs to address sm4sh news, just in an alloted 5 minutes or something.

Also, I don't think this signifies the last balance patch/patch/DLC releases unless explicitly stated in this upcoming broadcast.

Yeah, considering how much money the SSB amiibos probably bring in, I'd be stunned if they stopped adding characters to the game because then they're no longer rolling out money-printing amiibos.

Cloud is from Final Fantasy and that franchise has a rated M game, Final Fantasy Type-0. Snake also appeared in Portable Ops+ which was rated T (granted Portable Ops was rated M) and also made a cameo in a game called Boktai 2 which is rated E and also made an appearance in Ape Escape, which also rated E.

The issue with Snake isn't with the rating, but with the company. Don't you think if they wanted Snake back they would have asked Konami back while the game was still in development?

What's type 0 have to do with anything? That doesn't make Cloud an M rated character at all and being in Portable Ops isn't a problem because that's TEEN rated, if you didn't see it I said "You can tone down an M rated character for a Teen rating but trying to tone them down for E10 just won't turn out well." By won't work out well I mean they'll have to be censored to hell and back in an E10 game. I assume he didn't have any of his guns and didn't smoke, etc when he showed up in those 2 E rated games. Heck look at Brawl, no guns whatsoever which meant no CQC which is Snakes unique fighting style. If he couldn't have guns in a teen game then in an E10 one he probably won't be allowed any real military weapons so that's means no grenades, no C4s, no missile launcher and more. Lol all he'll have left is just some punches, kicks and Cypher (his up B)

I'm not sure what to make of any of that, TBH. Konami has just gone weird as of late.

Also, with Snake changing voice actors and everything (poor David Hayter :( ), I can't help but wonder if Simon Belmont would make more sense since he was iconic enough to put him (albeit a bizarre version) in a Nintendo cartoon at one point.

Though, I don't think I've seen ANYONE ask for him back...

Yeah another thing I thought of is what if Konami wanted the new Snake to be used (MGSV), but Sakurai said only the classic one. Remember he wouldn't have included Pacman if Namco wanted the Ghostly adventures version.

Mario Kart's DLC printed money too, and people expected that to keep going. We've yet to see any indication they plan to continue it.

Honestly I hope most of all that Sakurai clarifies if he plans to keep going or not. I can't deal with "BUT THEY CAN ALWAYS PAY HIM TO DO MORE DLC!" up until Smash 5.
