Absolutely yes I'd pick a ton of Mario characters before him, Toad specifically first, then Waluigi, Paper Mario, Fawful, King Boo and Kamek for Yoshi (Kamek is one of my fav Mario chars but I think he should have the Yoshi series icon). And for my own preferences, things like Birdo as a semi echo/echo of Yoshi.

Well, there was this one mod that replaced Wii Fit Trainer with Reckless Safety Notice Man, and WFT has been compared to RFT.

anecdotes added because i am very bored and have no restraint; in case of tl;dr read only the bold text

• Krystal > Wolf, at least at the time. he ended up being one of my favorite characters, but even now I'd still be tempted to make the trade
• Midna or Skull Kid > both small Links - like you could take both of them and just give me one of my picks
• Genesect > Greninja. the frog is fun enough but i'd much rather rep my favorite set over one of my least favorites
• Decidueye or one of the quadrupedal Lycanroc forms > Incineroar's ugly mug. as an alternative I would have gladly taken Mimikyu, Zeraora, Marshadow, Salazzle, Golisopod, Midnight Lycanroc, Tapu Koko, Alolan Marowak, or really most other semi-popular gen 7 picks, but we got the only one i didn't want it to be
• Ocarina or Twilight skins for Link > the Tunic of the Wild. this one's pretty minor tbh, the Champion's suit looks good and the Wild set is fine
• any single Kirby newcomer > every Fire emblem addition after Ike. yeah yeah i know, this one breaks the Equivalent Exchange rule. but i don't know Fire Emblem well enough to offer good alternatives, and i think Kirby deserves a little more love. preferably from a recent game
• Rundas > Dark Samus, such wasted potential being stuck as a Samus echo
• Viridi, Phosphora, or PYRRHON > Dark Pit. he's just a boring pick, echo or otherwise
• Toad, Waluigi, or Paper Mario > Daisy and Dr. Mario. never cared about either of them, but i could've at least gotten on board with Daisy if they'd based her on the spinoffs - or even better, used her as an avenue to get more Mario Land content in the spotlight. as it is, she should've just stayed a skin for Peach
• Black Mage > Cloud. a far more interesting choice imo, and one that's had more than a bit part on a Nintendo system
• a $5 gift card to Subway > Ultimate's entire DLC lineup as of this post

and for hypothetical future content:

• most other Zelda options > Impa. i dunno why, she's never interested me as a Smash possibility. I'd prefer someone less humanlike such as Midna or Mipha, but even Tingle seems more fun
• one of the Legends: Arceus starters, or just not having a Pokemon newcomer > anything from gen 8. this has been my least favorite Pokemon generation to date, partly due to not liking most of the new additions. conversely, all three of PLA's starters are among my favorite Pokemon of their respective types

Doomguy (Doom 1993) over Doom Slayer (Doom 2016) (I know if he gets into Smash as a character it will 100% be the Slayer but I like the pre-2016 games way more. Even if that is partly because of the immense modding scene it has. That said, I'd still take Doom Slayer over Brutal Doom Guy)

Saki Amamiya (Sin and Punishment) over Master Chief (Halo) (1st party rep from a relatively unknown franchise over a guy that can barely show any emotion)

Personally, I feel there are a lot more inspired choices for an F-Zero character than Blood Falcon or Black Shadow. As much as I like the pair, there's tons of options besides! For example:

Samurai Goroh has been a quite popular pick at points in time, and him using his dual katanas as well as a heavyweight rushdown archetype could work pretty well in his favour to make him different to other picks.

Pico could be an interesting zoner-grappler, being able to land hits from a distance with his various weapons (such as his rifle seen in F-Zero GX's bonus videos,) but also being able to get up close and handle people one-on-one. Of these, I would actually prefer to see Pico - as he fulfils an effective villain role and brings an interesting playstyle to the table.

I imagine Mighty Gazelle could rival Captain Falcon in speed, but would be much lighter and genuinely be in trouble if comboed. However, to make up for this, Gazelle would have a ton of methods to land comboes himself, playing a little like a Sheik archetype of being incredibly fast but relying in comboes to actually K.O opponents. Sure, he's not as popular as the other two, but he could be interesting.

The truey chaotic pick, Digi-Boy from AX could be a really fun pick. With his entire moveset being based around the fact that he's a boy genius, I think the idea of a trapper-zoner playstyle would work well for him, especially if it rewarded close analysis of the opponents at hand.

I don't want to like, put down people that genuinely do want Blood Falcon or Black Shadow, as they are pretty cool choices! These are just ideas I'd prefer personally.

One of my obvious choices is Deathborn. The "true" vilain of the story, he's powerful, can fly and teleport... And I would love to see his victory pose when he stands up in the cinema theatre, cheering at himself!
