at the end of the day, the RL melee community and the RL brawl community are going to be the same people, minus a few

if you've been to any brawl tournaments (have you?) the turnout is better, and it's the same people that you used to see at melee tournaments

the "community" will be fine - people who love melee will return to it if they decide they don't like brawl, people who were just going through the motions probably would have quit anyway, so the release of brawl didn't affect them... and if brawl DOES turn out to be good, I'm sure that everyone right now who thinks brawl is an awful competitive game will at that point come around and, once again, we'll have the same community

i don't think you're going to convince anyone who wasn't already playing melee to start playing melee now... that's just a bad-sounding argument for someone who just got a shiny new game (and a game that, if you hadn't played melee, is simply AMAZING) to tell them to play a 6-year old game instead

My questiones for you are: Do you visit the regional threads ever? Do you ever attend real tournaments? Do you play with many other smashers on this site in real life?
Hmm, lets see... Yes, Yes and Yes. Looks like I can pass judgment and I say you are wrong. The brawl competitive scene is the scene of the future. Its just a different scene, one that relies more on mind games then advanced techs.

Sitting on my couch playing Brawl today, I realized that it sucks. Don't get me wrong, Brawl is probably the best game ever made in terms of fun. However, I can't see it going anywhere competitive for any other reason than the massive popularity. Playing against my drunken roommate, I realized that he was hitting me. But in Melee, I had tech skill that could make sure that he doesn't make a random Marth Fsmash work. This is because of the incredible metagame that Melee has. Also, if you haven't experienced the metagame of Melee, you really don't have an argument against Melee.
BRAWL SUCKS BECAUSE MY GAMEBREAKING GLITCHES FROM MELEE DON'T WORK BAWWWWWWWWWWW

You even admitted yourself that Brawl is "the best game ever in terms of fun." But for some reason there's something more important than fun now.

I hate you so much.

in terms of fun, its a great game, but its a terrible competitive game. Think about it. Cops and Robbers is a fun game, but I wouldn't play it for money. (NO, im not comparing cops and robbers to Brawl, im just comparing 2 fun activities)

Also, im going to throw in that this person is the influx of anchovies I'm talking about.

The OP was not starting a brawl vs melee thread, but trying to get new smashers to adopt melee over brawl. The above quote does a great job at explaining the brick wall he is going to be up against. I never owned melee but I was excited for brawl. Now that I have it, I enjoy it. I don't care which game is better, I have brawl and that is what I will play and that’s the community I want to be involved in.

Guys, please read this update. I posted it here and on the first page. Thank you.

Dear everyone,

First, I need to apologize for the way this thread went. I intended it to be one thing, and it became another. This was not supposed to be another Melee vs. Brawl thread, but because of my poor wording and personal opinions, it became just that. However, I recognized my mistakes and decided to admit them and correct them. So, if you'll give me another chance, I'd like to make sure my real message is heard.

As all of us know, the community is split over Brawl and Melee. I have always supported Melee, but that really doesn't matter in the context of this post because I support the competitive community over both games. What is the competitive community? It is a world-wide group of smashers that work toward pushing the games' limits, setting up tournaments with a standard set of rules, and making friends. At this point, I'd like to quote PC on something he said earlier in this thread because it probably was overlooked...

P.c. Chris said:
I miss melee like a lot of other people and with good reason. I've played melee since the American release . I've made over $25,000 from melee tournaments, met some of my best friends from tournaments and even a girlfriend and some point LOL. Got to travel all over the US cuz of melee. I love the game itself and the community and the opportunities the game opened for me. Even with all of that i think we should give brawl a chance. I think it can be competitive. I've got that passion again to get good like i did in melee when i was fairly new. I love learning new things and right now brawl just interests me a lot.
I think PC did an excellent job of showcasing why our competitive community was such a great thing. Our problem is keeping the community alive. It seems clear that not too many of the new guys here will be joining the community to play Melee. On the other hand, will many be joining the community to play Brawl? Although smashboards has seemingly tripled in size lately, it doesn't seem like the IRL competitive community is growing much... and that is sad. Nintendo's garbage excuse for an online system looks like it could be the community's biggest threat to continued growth. People would rather sit in their basements, play against n00bs, and deal with 30 frames of lag then to travel a little bit to play with the community. Online tournaments are an absolute joke, too... but I'll save that for another thread.

Anyhow, I'm inviting all the new guys to the boards to visit your respective regional threads and get involved. Find some quality smashers in your area, go to a real local tournament (not some Gamestop BS), and make some friends. I'm sure most of your local smashers will be more than happy to play with you, talk with you, and show you the ropes. Additionally, they probably will be playing both Brawl and Melee at this point... so whatever game you are here for, you'll have some competition.

Once again, I'm sorry for the mess that this thread became... but at least I made the effort to clean it up. I hope you guys heard me out, and I'll see you at the tournament.

much love,
D20

you are fighting a good fight here D20 but im pretty sure its a losing battle, you may as well just give up dude, people will do what they want and aren't likely to change based on your opinion. i think its a good opinion and i agree with you about the competitive scene, but people are lazy and don't want to get great at games they just want to goof off and have fun with friends.

At tournaments I goof off and have fun with friends all the time. It's been like, 3 weeks since my last tournament and it'll be about 3 more weeks before I go to another. This **** is killing me.

I like how that's comparing two games that play very different, one which has been around for years, and one which has been around for a month.

"mind games" are simply a substitution for thinking for yourself

and i've found that plenty of people travel out to brawl tournaments - the one i went to last week had quite a few people that hadn't been to melee tournaments before

the people that AREN'T going to travel are those who are 12 and have parent issues and honestly, not trying to be super offensive, but i'm glad they aren't showing

I introduced competitive melee to casuals in my college gameroom last year. I am not very good at melee (taki and d20 can attest to this) but these people were amazed at the things I could do. Of their own choosing, they started doing teams and 1v1s instead of FFAs, with stock and no items.

After Brawl came out I expected to walk into the gameroom on the following Monday to hear Wolf's howl or DDD's EEEEYUP. But I saw no Wii, only a gamecube. They all enjoy Melee more than Brawl.

Melee let's them feel good. Melee rewards skill. Brawl, to even these very casual players, is slow and boring. Brawl, to any sensible person with a modicum of taste, is slow and boring. Anyone who likes Brawl will eventually get burned out on it, even if it takes a billion arrow-spamming HIYAIYAIYAAA-ing Pits to do it. Once the novelty of Brawl wears off, it will be easier to draw more people into Melee by showing them it is a much more rewarding game.

Brawl is the partygame people in the 2D fighter community thought Melee was. That the competitive smash community is actually moving forward with what is obviously garbage is very, very bad for the image and future of smash players.
And all the joinedmarch2008f@gs on General Brawl are 14 year-olds who will go back to making naruto AMVs and fingering each other's buttholes in a few months.

I realize that this is kind of counter productive, but the reason I stopped going to tourneys (before brawl came out) was because the competitive community in my area was... how do I phrase this. Closed off?

If you weren't one of the respected players, there are only a small handful of players that will talk to you or give you helpful advice. I spent my time there waiting 20 minutes for a friendly, getting knocked out fast and not receiving a word of advice of encouragement, then waiting another 20 minutes.

Though I will give it another shot. Maybe it won't be so crowded if there's a smaller group interested?

I think the people that say, "Competition takes all the fun away," are an interesting lot. It's completely different than everything I have ever done. Competition is too fun for me, especially when it came to melee.

I guess that' why I get frustrated with new people that tell me to lighten up and play with items or banned stages. I just don't have fun the same way they do and they don't understand and vice versa.

you're right corey. I think everyone I have heard who says they hate competitive melee were the ones who refused to learn the techs.

i dunno, i'm new to the bay area myself (been here less than 2 months) and i've found everyone pretty accommodating and friendly

were you talking to SS or something? word is he doesn't talk to anyone

in general, if you want someone to give you advice, especially someone you just played, all you have to do is ask... most smashers don't hoard tricks/information and are more than willing to give you some pointers

Actually, the last match I fought involved SS ****** my fox in the most horrible way imaginable. ;_;

There were definitely some very cool people there, but I still couldn't help feeling that several just... ehhh... whatever, maybe I wasn't talking enough myself. *shrugs*

I'm certainly willing to give it another shot, though it looks like the SJSU tournies don't exist anymore. :(

PockyD, it's refreshing to hear that some Brawl tournaments are happening near you and that the number of entrants is increasing. However, as you might have guessed, there haven't been any Brawl tournaments within 3 hours of Pittsburgh. C3 and TGP are the only venues in the area that seem to be touching Brawl right now. As for Melee, at least Pittsburgh is working on Smashtastrophe II... which should take place at the end of April.

There is some good news from Ohio though. Cleveland is hosting a Brawl/Melee tournament in about 2 weeks, so I'm really interested in how that will play out. Since I've been to that venue before, I'll be able to compare the size of this events to past ones.

The community is not split over anything. Most people will play Brawl, a few will go back to melee.

D20-

Just some news from NC. We are working on setting up our first brawl tourney and *should* have a large increase in people who enter. I say *should* because our locator thread has been filled for about a month now with people I have never heard of / seen before. It will be very interesting indeed to see if we get any new faces or if we just end up seeing how good our old community dawgs are at brawl.

ps- props on the thread, I know exactly where you are coming from.
