I have been playing brawl for a while, and I recently decided to go to a tournament. It is a fairly big one, big names like M2K and Chillendude, Chudat Etc are said to show.

I mainly play GaW, but I was wondering if that was a good choice. He is such a technically simply character, and his strategies don't vary that much, I think it all comes down to experience. But, the problem with that is I only have one friend to play with, and that can only take me so far.

So, my question is... is an inexperienced GnW going to make it out of pools? What character would be the best to learn, and has the most universal strategy, that I can learn and do reasonably well?

Meta Knight, unless you're not looking for him, go Snake, DDD ,G&W, Marth or Falco

You shouldn't go to a tournament and expect to win anything special if you fight the likes of ChuDat, Chillin and m2k for the first time. Just go there. The experience alone is more than worth it. Consider yourself lucky to go to such a tournament. I'm livilng in central Europe and there are no big tournaments at all and the small ones are full of newbs. I could only dream to go to a major tournament and prove myself...

...just go there and **** ;)

Yea, I was thinking that. But my MK will not vary much from the leagues of them, and being inexperience in all the strats could hurt me.

Then again, MK isn't trying to out-original people as much as completely shut them down =\.

Thanks for the input.

ETA: Yea, I don't think im gonna win or anything ludicrous like that. The last tournament I went to, INNsomnia IV for melee, I got smacked like a ***** in the pools, and never even smell't a bracket. I just wanna play some people at my level, and I feel I need to move up more than asking them to move down seems practical =]

Well...

I think you should be able to answer that for yourself with one look at these boards.

I'll give you a hint:

His name starts with "Meta" and ends with "Knight".

Can you guess who?

Marth? Lol.

What I am leaning towards is GaW and MK counterpick (Original, no?). I just felt as if you need to know how to play them against all types of opponents. I was just wondering if this set off an alarm for anyone else..

I know how you feel man =/ Online lags for Europe too much and a lot of newbs in tourney's =(

(I was never in a tourney, but I heard people and stuff saying that they aren't very big, and plus its very rare to find one)

Use Snake. He is much better than MK, although lower on the list. MK is too light and isn't strong enough

Why are we only suggesting the top/high tiers here or just Metaknight folks?

If Game and Watch is your character to go, then go for it. He's much more impressive than people think, his only glaring problem is he's one of the lightest characters in the game (correct if I am wrong, but 2nd lightest to Jigglypuff), but the flow G&W can go is amazing, and has very few bad matchups.

Who knows, you might be the only G&W rep there, so REP HIM PROUD =)

Serious posts please.
The funny thing is I think he was serious. Lol.

But as far as who's going to take you out of pools as an experienced player? Nobody. MK is the most likely option, but just because of the obvious. Basically, if you don't have experience in tournaments, you won't do well. However, it'll make you that much better in the next one!

Bring the friend you smash with, get him better too. That way your day to day practice will be that much better.

10no.

To answer your question. Metaknight. Metaknight counters everything, and anything, and should be used until he is banned and/or kidnapped. Trust me, kidnapping is an option, i'm SURE the Zelda part of Nintendo is pretty pissed at all their characters being placed so low on the tier list.

Seriosuly though counter picking marth or metaknight. I don't know too much about GaW matchups but I think he would also do well by himself..

You read it wrong. If I lose I would pick their character's worst stage and MK. MK would be my counterpick!

And, I am bringing the friend.

I just want to make it out of pools! M2K is there, Chillindude, Chudat, and Jcaeser! There are many more, I don't remember who all is coming. The best player I played in my last tournament was ihavespaceballs, and It was a great experience that I want to live again.

Thanks for the advice guys. And to answer a question a few posts back, GnW is tied for the lightest character in brawl.

Go and Rep GnW to the fullest. I should be repping him in my area, but I gave up on him to main Falco =[.

And you use MK to counter other people lol smart kid, I need to learn to play with MK.

Some people have even gone so far as to say GW is broken, believe me I've read it before...
Stick to your guns (in your case being GW), or learn to play Snake as a counterpick. Just not MK. Please not MK!

BTW Phloat- I am going to the same tournament you are. Hope to play ya there! ;)

Mr. Game & Watch is an excellent character. He's top tier, for pete's sake. You should be fine going only G&W in a tournament, just learn your matchups.

I was just wondering if he was a character that needed some sort of unwritable knowledge. I learned a lot more in 2 days at a tournament about fox than any thread I ever read at smashboards, and I was wondering if Brawl had the same type of ordeal. I know he is good, I was just weak after reading the staggering attendance list =P

Thanks for the help guys, I was weak and cold footed =]

Haha, one of my scrub friends made it to the fourth round of a tourney after playing GaW for a week. He's plenty good enough for tourney play.

I play as GaW for fun but Fox is my tournement pick. I like to think of him as the darkhorse and the rate people play at him have dropped since melee

Universal strategies? Why would you want that? You should strive to create your own unique playstyle instead of just copying other people thus making you harder to counter. Regardless, the characters that I see played in the most similar fashion from person to person are Metaknight, Olimar, and Wolf while the characters that usually differ greatly from person to person are Yoshi, Falco, and Peach (at least from my personal experience).
