The Smashboards Mentoring Program
Hello and Welcome! The Itty Bitty Welcoming Committee brings you the new, revamped Mentoring Program. If you're looking to bring your game to new levels, whether it be Brawl, Melee, or even Pokemon, we've got a mentor for you!
Our Mission Statement
The Smashboards Mentoring Program is designed to help those in need of help to reach their goals in competitive Smash and Pokemon. We aim to help those in need with a constructive, positive manner that helps both the student and the teacher reach the peak of their potential.Types of mentors

Debate Mentors (Note: Debate mentoring is a work in progress)
The process of gaining a mentor
1. A pupil should request a mentor. The pupil should look at the list of mentors and PM one of the mentors for their topic. If there are multiple mentors the pupil can PM any one of them. If a mentor is unresponsive, the pupil should post in this thread saying so.
2. The mentor should PM the pupil back and tell the pupil the best ways to contact them and when they will be available to mentor.
3. The pupil should then post in the thread saying that they have found a mentor and post the username of their mentor and the mentoring topic.
4. Mentoring should then take place in whatever way is most convenient for the mentor and pupil. Pupils and mentors should strive to be communicating on a consistent basis. If there are any questions, concerns, or comments with the way the mentoring is proceeding, the mentor or pupil should PM Old Man Grey or Ndayday. NOTE: The pupil is responsible for getting the amount of contact they need! The pupil is in control of how often they contact the mentor and what type of mentoring takes place.
5. When the mentoring is over, the pupil should post in the thread saying that it is over. Feel free to leave feedback, but please be respectful.
Ways to make the most of your mentoring experience
1. Tell your mentor where you are and where you want to be in terms of the competitive aspect of the game you want mentoring in. Try having questions for your mentor. The more your mentor knows about you, the more your mentor can figure out what to help you with.
2. Although not an absolute requirement, it is appreciated if pupils at least come somewhat prepared for mentoring. If you're looking for a smash mentor, you should know the controls of the game as well as what your characters moves are. If you're looking for a pokemon mentor, you should know how a pokemon battle works and know about mechanics such as super effective and not very effective moves. Simple background knowledge like this really helps speed up the process.
3. If a pupil has a concern with a mentor, or a mentor has a concern with a student, please PM Grey about the concern and we will address the problem immediately. Mentors, if you feel overworked, we will work with you to cut down your schedule and/or get another mentor for your subject. Pupils should PM Grey if they want to switch mentors for any reason.
4. You don't have to communicate just through Smashboards! Use instant messaging clients like MSN and AIM to have conversations easier! Remember, communicating as much as possible is the key to both the mentor and the student having a positive experience. The more you communicate, the better the mentor will be able to understand and assist their pupil.
5. Mentors should always be ready to correct pupils when they are incorrect, but should do so in a respectful and constructive manner. Insulting a pupil or acting condescending is unprofessional and will not be accepted. At the same time, pupils should be willing to accept advice. Pupils should not react angrily or reluctantly to advice, especially since it is intended to help them.
6. Please follow the instructions in the "process of gaining a mentor" section! We cannot stress enough how much following these simple instructions will help both the pupil and mentor gain more out of this experience.
7. Stuck? Don't know where to start? Kirby mentor JoWiiCIDE has a suggestion on how a mentor can help "build an effective foundation" for their pupil:
[collapse=JoWiiCIDE's Suggestion]
"I figured the best way to go [about] it was 'the first wifi match' where I gauged his skill level, then a talk about the terms and strategies, stage discussion, and general tips, then 'the practice rounds' where the info is put to the test. Then tips and comments on actual tournaments along [with] the various tournament-only things he could expect to see like GF,WF and LF, MMs, and crews. Lastly my aim is to go to the same tournament with my trainee and stay with him throughout the day to coach, support and challenge. I feel this route worked well as I am on the last step and I feel my trainee has a good foundation to grow on which is what we're aiming [for]".[/collapse]
Applying to be a Mentor
If are interested in becoming a mentor, please PM Old Man Grey. Your application should include your qualifications (tournament results, good posts, people vouching for you, etc.) and the best way of contacting you (PMs, AIM, etc). Don't be shy about applying!

As you can see above, we do not have mentors for every character (or Pokemon tier). We apologize for this inconvenience. We are still in the process of adding mentors, so we appreciate you bearing with us.
Mentoring Program Banner
If you would like either of the mentoring thread banners (shown below), PM Old Man Grey for the code. Anyone can have either banner, but mentors are required to have it. The banner should only be turned on in situations that will not cause signature violations, as we do not want to give our program a bad reputation.
Special Thanks
- We would like to give special thanks to Infinite Emerald for originally coming up with the idea and taking the initiative to post it here.- We would also like to thank SuSa and Chronodiver Lokii, who kindly made our current Mentoring Program Banners, as seen above!
- Thanks to Fuel-bee and JoWiiCIDE, who have made helpful suggestions that have improved our program.
- Thanks to highfive, soupamario, and th3kuzinator, who expanded our services by offering to mentor in new subjects!
If you have any questions, suggestions, or comments, please PM Old Man Grey / Ndayday about it, be it mentor or student. Happy Mentoring!
