So what would y'all say is the worst (or least favorite) Spongebob episode, and what would you say is the worst pre-first movie episode?

For me, One Coarse Meal was my least favorite for the longest, but that may be changing cause there are some hot dookie ones in the back of my mind, like Pet Sitter Pat and Gary's New Pal, and like half of season 6.

And the Great Snail Race from season 3 gotta be the worst pre-movie episode.

In the Great Snail Race's defense, Spongeob at least realized he screwed up by the end.

In the Gary's Pal episode...not so much. That and the weird and out of place fish monster design makes it one of my least favorites as well.

My absolute least favorite episode, though...has to be this one:

Have Izuka team up with Atlus and make the Sonic equivelent to Super Mario RPG. I would love this.
That could end up incredibly interesting but I also kinda wanna see what Sonic Team would specifically cook up. Like, the combat system in Frontiers is barebones but they also considered some more 'traditional' stuff before making it more Sonic-y which I feel is important
I watched a Youtube Video about I Saw the TV Glow earlier and I've been a little shaken since.

Like I haven't even actually seen the movie and it's still messing with my psyche somehow. The mere plot summary freaks me out.
Gonna watch that with the bois next week on our annual Halloween get together, as they're both very confident in being cis, I expect to be a total wreck by the end while they simply don't get it lmao

I can't say there's really a pre-movie episode I think is terrible, but I'll never forgive the mental scars Wormy gave me.

As for post-movie, aside from the already-mentioned ones, Ink Lemonade really made me cringe. We're basically watching Squidward get his snot milked!

So then what would you say is the worst pre-movoe episode?
Can I be honest? Probably Hooky.

Even if it was supposed to be a lesson taught by "scaring them straight", what happened to Spongebob in this episode felt a little too cruel to me even when I was a kid. More so since it was implied that Spongebob and Pearl might have had crushes on each other in the early seasons.

Oh, yeah, and less worth of note, but Patrick also seemingly got turned into canned seafood. It should speak volumes that a main character literally dying at the very end of it as a joke isn't the worst aspect of the episode.

...Actually, Shanghai'd and Squid on Strike are contenders for the 2nd and 3rd worst as well for similar gags, only this time making up the episode's entire ending and seemingly resulting in the deaths of more than one main character. This still being Spongebob, at least all three episodes gave us some solid memes (Patrick's mouth being filled with deadly fishing hooks, the Flying Dutchman repeatedly saying "Welcome back!", Squidward being trampled, etc.)

One Coarse Meal, as dark as it is, is a tiny bit overhated tbf.

Like, it's a bad episode, and Mr.Krabs is especially heinous in it, but I feel like there's been worse.

Like the time they did a fake out of Squidward with a rope, where it was framed to look like he was going to hang himself.

Or just, all of the Splinter.

Wasn't that the inspiration for that creepypasta? Or was that written before that episode came out?

Either way, those are stupidly tasteless and dark. I don't remember the episode's name, but I can't remember anything positive about it, either.

Or just, all of the Splinter.
Okay, that one's bad for a different reason.

Could they have made the splinter and the injury it caused any grosser?

Well, there's the episode where Squidward gets a couch dropped on his foot and it shows in great detail his toenail and flesh being ripped off.

And yeah. The episode's original title was originally "Plankton Got Served" and someone made a creepypasta off it....

And this.....

What's wild are these bad episodes are all 10-18 years old. To a certain audience, that's classic Spongebob.

Also I think I got a new answer: Truth or Square. Not my personal least favorite (imo, way too boring that I barely think about it), but may be the worst Spongebob episode ever made.

Like the time they did a fake out of Squidward with a rope, where it was framed to look like he was going to hang himself.

What's weird is that I don't hate these episodes like everyone else does. Are You Happy Now at least had Spongebob trying to help (though they made Squidward far too depressed). Still not a good episode.

The Splinter was just boring besides the grossout, but then again Seaon 6 has like 10 contenders for worst Spongebob episode of all time (and Splinter is one of them imo).

hot take but House Fancy is not one of them, grotesque toenail scene included

Never forget they referenced Squidward's Sui-----Wait, I can't say that word? Squidward's Unaliving.... and then it was too scary for Engerland so they removed it.

Come to think of it, my era of Spongebob was some BS. I was either not alive or too young to remember seasons 1-4, and my earliest memories of new episodes was about late season 5. Now season 6, 7, and 8 I remember them promoting new episodes every week. Truth or Square was heralded as a massive event and that **** was some GARBAGE. They was selling me some DOO DOO CACA MANURE

Atlantis Squarepantis?
It was weird. But not like normal SpongeBob hilarious weird, just kinda meandering with really awkward songs and I don’t remember it being too funny.

Not the worst SpongeBob special though, we’ve already established that.

Actually that makes me wonder, do they still do special SpongeBob episodes? I know they still have a holiday or anniversary episode here and there, but like 15 years ago every year they were hyping up a new big event. There’d be happy meal toys just for the new episode.

Ass. I remember them promoting the heck out of that too and it sucked.

But I can barely remember the episode now. So much so that I somehow blocked the Patchy the Pirate segments from my head.

Now I do remember my older sister despising Patchy Segments in general, I wonder if this episode or Truth or Square had anything to do with it.

I meant the Squidward one, but somehow I'm not even that surprised that One Coarse Meal also got a creepypasta.

Also, don't remind me of that lmao

Actually, this more or less matches up with my hot take on that episode as well.

I still think the toenail scene is disgusting and pointless (more so since, like, what other times has Squidward ever even been shown to HAVE toenails? He's a squid), but outside of that one scene, House Fancy is actually a pretty funny and overall solid episode.

Plus, it ultimately ends with Squidward getting a win, and also Squilliam losing for one of the few times since his Band Geeks.

They did a special for the 20th anniversary which imo would've been perfect for the series finale. Like every single character from the series appeared in that episode (including Mindy), had the VAs play a live action version of Spongebob, and it ended with Patchy the Pirate achieving his lifelong dream of meeting Spongebob, closing with a tribite to Stephen Hillenberg.

The 25th anniversary just did sequel episodes, the Idiot Box sequel was apparently terrible.

idk what they were smoking to have made that episode, but they should’ve been stopped quicker than Dan Schneider. Always know your limits and fears and stuff I guess idk

If any of the post-movie special event episodes that Nickelodeon hyped up back in the day were actually good, it was this one:

Okay, yeah, sure, they did the same thing they did for most of the specials and call it a different title than the actual episode name ("Where's Gary?" in this case), but the actual episode was surprisingly moving, and got shockingly dark in the final act, but not unnecessarily so.

The animation may have still been pretty different from earlier seasons, as was the case with all of the episodes in that season, but it still felt like it captured the spirit of Spongebob while doing something new and different.

It kinda sucks. They got David Bowie and didn't have him sing,

(Although I watched it religiously as a kid because I had it on DVD)

Spongebob being weirdly good in live action is a trend actually

Everyone nominating season 6 episodes as the worst, suffice to say that's everyone's least favorite.

Though imo Season 7 is almost as bad, it's bad episodes were truly horrendous. 6 was just widespread bad everybother episode.

And season 8 was ok but there were some oh man episodes in there.

And also Wormy closeups were of a horsefly. Butterflies did nothing wrong.

Also they made Nosferatu a pseudo re-occurring character and like...

It's funny but....why?
The same reason they brought Doodlebob back: nostalgia.

I don't just mean to draw back old fans, either. It's likely that a lot of people working on the show in the last few seasons grew up watching the show themselves, so they have a fondness for the older seasons as well and have been trying to experiment with bringing some characters and elements from them back.

If any of you guys like the Terminator series, there's a video that goes over most of the games about the franchise up on Youtube. It's a long one, but does a good job going over most of it and you can also learn a thing or two about the series' history. Generally, I like the retrospectives these two do.
