It’s so crazy how the Switch 2 direct is only two weeks away. They announced it back in January, but the days are going by quick.

In comparison, the wait for this year’s Pokemon Day felt unbearable. At least for me. But that’s probably because I’m a super hyper Pokemon fan, perhaps to an unhealthy degree.

...so is it a hot take to say BOTW > TOTK?
I personally think both games are on even ground, if anything.

Mechanically and gameplay-wise, I definitely think TotK is better. The Fuse system provided a much-needed crafting system as well as an easier means of getting stronger or at least more durable weapons (yeah, you still have to find a base for each weapon type, but Fuse allows you make those weapons much stronger or give them additional effects, so getting strong weapons is still much easier and less tedious than it was in BotW), and while I miss the Master Cycle Zero from BotW's DLC, the amount of vehicle and mech customization you can get more than makes up for it and is a blast to both experiment with and to actually use when you've discovered a good working design for one. The Zonai build system in general is honestly extremely creative and fun. There's also a much bigger enemy variety and I find the majority of them genuinely fun to fight. The boss fights are also much, much better and more creative than they were in the first game, both in terms of creature design and gameplay. The temple bosses and every phase of the Ganondorf fight especially, although the new overworld bosses are great, especially the new and improved deadly versions of the Gleeoks.

From a writing standpoint, however, BotW is arguably better. While I think the character writing for both games is top notch, and the character development of Zelda, Tulin, Yunobo, Sidon, Riju, as well as some of the new characters are all fantastic, and the new major characters themselves are all great, from a story-standpoint, BotW's writing has it beat. There's the whole backdrop of the near-apolacpytic situation Hyrule faced and the fall of the kingdom, the compelling cutscenes including Link's lost memories, and Link's entire journey to try and set right what went wrong and rally everyone in the kingdom to defeat Calamity Ganon and save Hyrule while still actively trying to remember who he was and everything he forgot. The worldbuilding is also fasntastic and has more consistent writing, as, while it's place in the timeline isn't clear, TotK only does a handful of token references to the events of BotW, barely referencing the Calamity Ganon itself or everything that led up to it's return and defeat, while most references to the game's events at all are limited to major characters remembering Link and being happy to work with him and save Hyrule again. Not to mention that most Sheikah tech just vanished off the face of the Earth with the lazy excuse that it just disappeaed when Calamity Ganon was defeated, and that Kass is nowehre to be found and never even mentioned despite his prominence throughout BotW and the fact that he's the father of the most of the children in Rito Village.

At the same time, though, both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have phenomenal gameplay, and TotK's game mechanics are largely just upgrades or great brand new additions to those of BotW's, the character writing for both games is phenomenal as well, and while the highly limited references to BotW's story feel like a wasted oporunity, TotK's story is still fantastic in it's own right.

...With all that said, there's exactly one element about TotK that I feel is truly lacking compared to BotW:

I miss fighting these guys.

There's really people out there that don't have any sort of internal monolouge.

I wonder how that feels. I be having whole convos in my head, I couldn't imagine just not having them.
Mine end up turning into external monologues, sometimes at my expense as it happens no matter who’s in my general area

Oh yeah, Xenoblade X definitive is getting good reviews, higher than the Wii U version.

I'll pick it up but I have way too many games to play now.
It's such a great game, gameplay wise it's my favorite of the Xenoblade franchise. One my friend who usually don't like the franchise loves X for the open world.

The only gripes is don't go in expecting a story as good as the main trilogy. This game is all about exploration, doing side quests, killing huge monsters, trying new classes and building your skell. Also the music is phenomena, this is the case for the whole series but X is truly something special. Right now I don't have the time to play a big jrpg so I'm going to skip it (already played it on Wii U), but I'll definitely get it later this summer to play it again and see what the new content is about.

I wanna witness the Super Sonic vs Super Shadow fight for the first time again.

Crazy how little a Super v Super fight has been done
My favorite thing in music is epic orchestra music mixed with non orchestral instruments (like electric guitar and drums or synthesizers etc.) so the movie mix in particular makes me feeel liiiife moving through my miiiiind!

I wish there were more times this was done but it really isn’t outside of film scores and the killer instinct 2013 ost.

Genre mixing music gets me hyped, I love when artists get creative blending certain styles and instruments together. Came across Bear McCreary’s work on the AVGN movie and I think if they did a classic Mega Man movie, he should be brought in for the OST with tracks that sound like this

"That is why I transformed my own body with my own hands."
"But that was the past. Now you're nothing but a speck of dust to me!"
"See me as I am, no longer afraid of anything!"

idk it did something to kid me, and when you think about it, Metal looking like Sonic, the inferior life form, and choosing to change his own body kinda has something trans-y going on

That analogy becomes really depressing when you remember what Eggman did to him afterwards

Batman and Shadow…nuff said
I'm sure it happens fairly regularly in the comics (one of DC's characters is Detective Chimp, who is one of Batman's rivals for the title of World's Greatest Detective), but it always feels surreal to me when Batman interacts with anthropomorphic animals from other universes and forms connections with them based on some kind of past trauma.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT STARTS LIKE THIS WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY DO GODDAMN TEKKEN COMBOS
This season is definitely unique.

Actually, it's more light-hearted than the previews led me to believe but man, these main characters are a wild bunch.

Yeah, it gets addicting real fast.

I'm already experiencing withdrawal because episode 5 is delayed a week. Let me learn the deal with the unicorn lady, Toei!

Seems like they future proofed Xenoblade X by adding a 60fps mode in the code that’s only partially implemented.

It seems like Switch 2 game upgrades are going to be a BIG feature present in the first year of Switch 2.

I still have a theory that Nintendo bought Shiver for this particular reason since they got expertise with porting games to the Switch. I’m VERY curious to see if they’re not leading the charge for upgrading as Nintendo’s premier port house.

And here I was thinking that in the middle of the transformation scene, you realized you were trans, came out, took a trip to the courthouse, got your named changed and all that, realized you had some time so you read a book, made some coffee, finished your favorite TV show, had dinner, came back and realized he's still ****ing transforming.

But yeah I see what you mean

Hot damn that was when I was like, 8, I'd have gone insane with a bit of caffeine in my system, so much so I probably would have been able to do that like Fry did in Futurama after what was it, 300 cups of coffee?
