Skyrim isn't a multiplayer game with a competitive scene. There's also a huge difference between asethitcs and whole new thinhs or changes to mechanics. Big hwads and light sabers in Skyrim are, by far and large, just asethitics. Story changes or major mechanic cjanges and yes the argumwnt could be made it is no longer Skyrim.

But none of that matters because Skyrim is a single player game people play for themselves so they can do w/e they want.

PM on the other hand is a multiplayer game with a competitive scene. Casually and by themselves and with friends they can do w/e they want with PM, and more power to em. But when it comes to the competitive scene its a whole different story.

3.6 is the final released build by the PMDT and therefore is the final official build of PM regardless of any future goals they had with it. Just like any other game. Add onto yhe fact that creating a universal ruleset with external stuff just isn't feasible, we have a hard enough time as is with just doing that with in game assets.

And sure adding in Knuckles might npt seem like a big change but then where does it end? Why not include that Riddley mod someone else made? Why not make further changes to characters? Why not make more legal stages? The list goes on. Add in one thing like Knuckles and it just becomes one big slippery slope.

At the end of the day, this game is a hack made by fans for fans. The definition of a Project M player shouldn't include which version one's playing. What does it matter what the PMDT intended when it's their players who play the game and have the power to pick what they like and don't like about it.
Knuckles will never be accepted by the Project M competitive community. There will always be a couple of people in each region going "Knuckles, Lyn, Isaac" with the other 99% opposing them. The realistic truth is that Knuckles will never make it into the game and be accepted worldwide on the competitive scene.

Excuse me but, it seems a little strange to me that the rules of discussion on a thread that seems so dead, are so strict. I have a deep respect for you as a game designer, but calling the possibility of Knuckles coming in PM, an "other stuff", while :
- he was lovingly developed for months or years by the PMDT which you were in ;
- I honestly don’t see how Nintendo or Sega would care at that point.
With that in mind it doesn’t seem a simple “other stuff” to me. I certainly do not understand how you feel about Knuckles in PM, and yet your opinion is clearly more valuable than mine, but if I may say one last thing on that matter, I still don’t see why you wouldn’t be optimistic of the outcomes on the PM community if you were to say that you encourages PM players to play with him or against him.
It may be naive of me, but I see only good outcomes, coming from such a declaration. Good outcomes for PM in every way.

That’s all I wanted to say, sorry to have been out of the subject of the thread.

The rules of the forum are not designed to spark the most amount of discussion, they are to establish what is appropriate to discuss. The activity or inactivity that follows is simply an organic result of what people are interested in discussing.
Hey, Strong Bad. What's your current tier list?
I haven't really sat down and made one in a long time. TBH, I have been pretty unplugged from the scene since I moved to California, so maybe I'm not the best one to ask. It seems like people are coming around to a few of the things I've been saying about character strength for a while, and in some other cases they've gone in the opposite direction of what I think. Which is OK.

here's a 5 minute tier list

SSS Tier, absolutely must be banned immediately: Charizard

S
MK Wolf Mewtwo

A+
Diddy Fox Sonic Sheik

A
G&W Wario ZSS Falcon Snake Lucas Peach

B
Marth DK ICs Lucario ROB Falco Ness Mario Toon Link Pikachu Ike Charizard

B-
Luigi Samus Ivysaur Roy Link Squirtle Pit Zelda Olimar

C
Puff Ganon Yoshi DDD Kirby Bowser

Not really interested in discussing or defending the list, since I didn't put much time into it, but enjoy.

Eh. Lots of people wouldn't have, for example, Peach and Pikachu so high, but like... lots of different opinions exist still. The opinions have converged towards an established group of viable and less viable characters, with specific placements being relatively unsure, and some characters being contentious (is Fox one of the best, or just pretty good?). Stuff like that.

hey, yall still alive? we got a new tier list to argue about

The competitive Project M scene has seen many changes in the four years since the now-disbanded Project M Back Room published the third-ever official Project M tier list. In March of 2020, Project M became Project Plus, a massive game overhaul complete with new mechanics and balance changes. As a result, the community experienced a re-emergence of popularity and competition, only to crash back down to the harsh underground reality of competitive Smash mods. Still, the community made another defiant refusal to sink quietly into the shadows, and we saw the birth of the Project+ "shadow major" in 2021. Undertow, Shipwrecked, Blacklisted 6, and Jailbreak all showcased huge upsets and new breakout stars, which of course means that it’s time to revisit the creation of a community tier list for our game.

This list, coordinated by Sabre and Motobug, is the first official tier list released for Project +. It was created using ballots from the following players:

Blue
Boringman
Cloudburst
Comb
Fearless
Kycse
Malachi
Motobug
Nogh
Rongunshu
Tealz
The Doctor
Yono

Players were asked to rank the cast. Their ballots were then averaged together with outliers removed to avoid having any one ballot dramatically skew any character’s placement. This methodology, adopted from the PMRank ballot process, is used to compile the aggregate opinions of top-level representatives from a variety of regions while mitigating the potential impact of any significant single outliers on the overall tier list.

All that being said, we present without further ado the first official Project+ v2.29 tier list.

Text Version:
S Tier: Meta Knight, Zero Suit Samus, Wolf
A+ Tier: Sonic, Mewtwo, Wario, Sheik, Fox, Captain Falcon
A Tier: Knuckles, Marth, Lucario, Ice Climbers, Ike, Donkey Kong, Mario, Lucas, Diddy Kong, Ivysaur, Falco
B Tier: Charizard, Pit, Link, Mr. Game & Watch, Roy, Pikachu, Ness, ROB, Squirtle, Toon Link, Peach, Bowser, Olimar
C Tier: Snake, Kirby, Samus, Ganondorf, Yoshi, Zelda
D Tier: Luigi, King Dedede, Jigglypuff

For those curious about some of the biggest changes in the Project M/+ meta and competitive scene over the past few years, below are some short write-ups on the most notable differences from the PMBR v3 tier list back in 2017.

Knuckles
The most obvious change from the previous tier list: Knuckles is now in the game! The newest addition to Project+ debuts at a respectable 10th place on the list, with every ballot placing him within at least the top 20. His fast frame data, great recovery, and brutal kill confirms have led the character to great success at the hands of players such as Yono and Motobug. With Knuckles being the most underdeveloped character in the game due to his recent release, his meta is still filled with potential for growth.

Zero Suit Samus
Zero Suit Samus jumped up 11 spots on the list, now joining Meta Knight and Wolf in the S tier. While Blank’s phenomenal performances at events like Even Bigger Balc in 2018 heralded her rise in Project M, 2021 saw an onslaught of newly-minted Zero Suit mains convinced of her potential, with PMRank 2019’s #1 player Malachi leading the charge. Her quick aerials and great aerial maneuverability make her great at juggling opponents off of any opening, and equally fast frame data on her normals make her a consistently effective close-range scrapper.

Ike
Even though Ike received few significant changes in Project +,the community has only recently begun to recognize the strength of his kit. Players such as Envy, Pikmon, Rongunshu, and metroid have earned a top 8 placement in several events over the past few years, including Even Bigger Balc, Undertow, Blacklisted 6, and Jailbreak. Ike is now bringing consistency as one of the best heavies in the game due to his burst movement options out of Quick Draw combined with his huge normals range, resulting in his rise of 11 spots on the tier list.

Project Plus Reworks
Two of the most hyped-up characters upon the release of Project+, Bowser and Pit, both received significant changes that generated a lot of excitement among the scene. Their massive reworks have enabled a jump up of 9 and 13 spots respectively on this list. Thanks to Malachi, American Bowser, and Sosa, both characters have made occasional appearances in national top 8s, and have plenty of representation at the lower and mid levels. While neither character is considered a top tier in Project+, their reworks went a long way toward mitigating fundamental weaknesses the characters had in Project M, and subsequently increased the community’s confidence in their viability.

Former Top Tiers
As any meta develops, there are winners and losers. Mr. Game & Watch and Snake were both ranked among the game’s best characters in 2017, but fell by 14 and 18 spots respectively on this year’s list. There are two primary factors for this: actual balance changes to the characters, and a lack of representation in the recent meta. Both characters received significant changes in Project+: Snake had his C4 kill setups toned down and Mr. Game & Watch had nearly every move in his kit nerfed to some degree. Because of the balance changes, many of the players who had previously showed off these characters’ strengths moved on from their old mains or moved on from the game entirely. For Snake, Flipp and Professor Pro are no longer competing regularly in Project +, while for Mr. Game & Watch, Forrest (formerly MrLz) is inactive, and both Pikmon and Drugfreechu play other characters now. As a result, both characters have declined significantly in their tournament results in 2021, and their placement in the new tier list reflects that.

Decline of the Floaties
Some of the biggest declines on this year’s tier list come from characters that received little to no changes through Project+: Luigi, Peach, Samus and Toon Link. This can be attributed to the following factors: Peach and Toon Link are no longer as well-represented in today’s scene due to Malachi and dvd respectively switching mains, but also the overall metagame development of the last few years has made the game at the top level less friendly to floaties. Characters such as Luigi, Peach, and Samus struggle harder than ever to find openings, and more polished defensive play further reduces their already meagre punish opportunities on non-fastfallers. By association, Toon Link, often seen as a floatie-killer in Project +, has also dropped on the tier list because the meta no longer heavily features the characters against whom he has the best matchups.

Despite the fall of many floaties on the tier list, it is important to note that the four majors that took place in 2021 were won by Mario, Charizard, and Ice Climbers. Perpetual low-tiers such as Kirby and Ganondorf had some of their best results in PM history last year. The Project+ meta continues to evolve, and every character has been and can be played at a top level in the right hands. Today’s article is meant to capture a snapshot of our top players’ meta and to generate discussion among the community, not to dictate what the game will always look like. Thank you for supporting the Project+ scene through 2021, and we look forward to what 2022 has to offer for our community and the greater smash community.

I personally really enjoy the new tier list. I think it's pretty darn accurate given how the meta is right now.
Some observations:

Mewtwo missing out on S tier is a surprise to me. But, him being top 5 is still appropriate.

IMO the best ordered tier is A tier. I love everything about how that tier is organized down to the order of it.

My main, Ness, being a solid mid tier and finishing 27th feels very right. I'm glad to see that people still think of him as fairly viable, considering I've heard some anti-Ness bias in the past from some of my friends.

I expected Bowser to be higher. Mid tier is fair for him but I thought he'd rank somewhere around Zard or Pit's level.

Seeing G&W and Peach in B tier and Snake in C tier is weird to see given PM, but a good call and expected. They don't feel the same like they were.

This tier list proves how well balanced this game is. This my favorite Smash game of all time, and one of the reasons why I love it to pieces is how well-balanced this cast is.

Great job, voting committee. This was a joy to read.

wake up folks we got a new list to argue over

We’re back! Over the past 3 years since the previous Project+ tier list, the competitive landscape has changed drastically. New, dominating forces have taken over the tournament scene, a major new balance patch released in the form of Project+ v3.0, and despite any efforts to stop us, there have been tons of new tournaments and players entering the game from all over the world.

This tier list, led by the team at Plus Side, aims to reflect these new shifts in the community, and we took a slightly different approach than before to ensure more members of the scene shared their voice. But without further ado, here is the list!

Text Version + Placement Shifts:
S+: :lucario: +11, :metaknight: -1
S: :sheik: +4, :falcon: +5
A+ :marth: +6, :wolf: -3, :fox: +1, :ike: +6, :wario: -3, :dk2: +5, :diddy: +7, :zerosuitsamus: -10, :sonic: -9, :mario2: +2
A: :lucas: +2, View attachment 399834 -6, :mewtwopm: -12, :yoshi2: +20, :gw: +5, :rob: +8, :snake: +13
B+: :falco: -2, :kirby2: +12, :pikachu2: +2, :link2: -2, :charizard: -5, :olimar: +6, :ivysaur: -9

Methodology:
Inspired by the great community efforts put together by the most recent Melee and Ultimate tier lists, we opted to invite every ranked player from the most recent PMRank to submit a ballot. This includes the international players from last year’s PMRank: EU and PMRank: AUS. Keen-eyed followers of the Project+ scene will remember there was also a planned PMRank: Japan that year as well, which unfortunately was not able to be fully completed. Not wanting to leave their scene behind, we invited 10 Project+ players from Japan, selected by their community members, to participate as well. Every application needed to be a fully completed tier list for the most recent version of P+, 3.0.5.
Of the 90 players contacted, 44 players submitted a completed tier list. 2 players submitted tier lists for Project M version 3.6, which unfortunately could not be used, resulting in 42 lists used in our dataset.
Every list was then weighed evenly against each other, with the top and bottom 15% outliers removed for each character. This amount of outliers being removed was selected due to the much larger and more diverse dataset we’ve collected compared to previous lists, and less resources to more accurately handle biases from all the regions represented.

The Data:
9 different characters were chosen as #1 by at least one ballot, with Mewtwo being the lowest ranked character to do so.
The characters that were voted #1 were:
Lucario
MK
Sheik
Falcon
Marth
Fox
Ike
ZSS
Sonic
Mewtwo

Also, 11 characters were voted the worst character in the game by at least one ballot, with Ivysaur being the highest ranked character to do so.
All the characters ranked #42 were:
Ivysaur
Squirtle
Ness
Ice Climbers
Bowser
King Dedede
Zelda
Toon Link
Peach
Samus
Luigi
Jigglypuff

Diddy Kong, Ice Climbers, and Zelda all had the widest range of votes, with a range of 38 placements. That means that there was at least one ballot that had each of those characters as top 4, and one ballot at bottom 4.

Yoshi had the largest standard deviation of any character, meaning its placement was the least consistent across the whole cast.

Lucario
A fourth unique #1 has been crowned in Project+: Lucario. While always considered as a strong character, other characters were either more prevalent in the metagame and/or easier to succeed with. However, with many of his peers being brought down a peg by Project+ v3.0, and Lucario not receiving as many changes by comparison, the public perception of Lucario has increased significantly. A whopping 20 players who submitted ballots placed Lucario as the best character in the game, with even more slotting him in at #2. This view isn’t misguided, either - being the only character in the game with his unique magic series, on top of very good frame data, disjointed moves, and exceptional kill power, Lucario is a force to be reckoned with. While most of his representation comes in a spot of #1 player SipMastah’s character lineup, the national breakout of TRai and essy’s recent usage of the character indicates we’re going to see more of the aura dog in the near future.

Yoshi
Yoshi has had occasional representatives since being added to the game in Project M 3.0 ranging from Burntsocks, Eyeheartlovetap and Juanpi in the early days to more modern threats like Triforce Trampstamp and Moist. Despite having semi-consistent representation, it wasn’t until New Jersey’s Shiny Zubat put his full effort into the game, leading to a 2024 resume packed with enough wins to get him ranked #2 on PMRank 2024, that people started respecting what Yoshi brings to the table. Up until now, Yoshi was often overlooked in the meta with previous tier placements often in the bottom 15 characters on every list he’s been ranked on, with his most recent placement being 38th on the 2022 official tier list. Outside of a massive buff to dash grab, as well as some functionality added to egg roll, a lot of what makes Yoshi so intimidating has largely been present for the entirety of his lifespan. His double jump armor allows him to power through moves and deliver unsuspecting reversals, often resulting in players sending themselves into the blastzone with poor DI. His smash attacks hit hard, sending at angles that make recovering quite difficult for some characters, while also occasionally shifting his hurtbox to provide defensive utility. His shield is uniquely immune to shield pokes, while retaining the ability to be jumped out of, a major weakness of his in Melee. Eggs are one of the most lethal projectiles in the game, staying active until they hit the ground or a target, and “exploding” on hit, which makes clanking them extremely difficult or even impossible for some characters. The buff to his dash grab he got in P+ 2.0 expanded the potency of his grab game, which empowered his devastating upthrow and downthrow combos to blow up opponents unfortunate enough to get caught. Yoshi’s meteoric rise up the tier list to 18th, his highest placement to date, may be a sign of things to come, as everyone’s favorite green dinosaur still has plenty left to prove.

Snake
Towards the end of the 3.6 meta, it was widely known that Snake was one of the best characters in that game, placing 12th on the final “official” 3.6 tier list. When Project+ toned down some of the more egregious aspects of Snake’s kit, such as removing the reverse hit of down tilt, decreasing the power of grenade and C4, shrinking up special’s hitboxes, and toning down his down air as a whole, many in the early days of Project+’s meta were quick to write off Snake as a low tier. The absence of Flipp and FlashingFire in the greater Project+ scene didn’t do much to help Snake’s case, and so Snake ended up placing 34th on the last tier list, a drop of 22 spots overall. Recently, however, Snake has been seeing increasingly higher placements on the mainstage again, with SoulOfficer leading the charge of the new wave of Snakes, placing 34th on PMRank 2024. Others, such as ilikepizza107 and the old-school Snakes MVZY and Dank have also demonstrated at events since the last tier list that Snake is still more than capable of taking names from the best of the best. While the dominant grip that Snake had on the 3.6 meta might not happen again, the character’s placement in this recent community tier list is reflective of the work SoulOfficer and others have put in to show his relevance in the meta.

Kirby
Historically, Kirby has not had many high level representatives outside of a few reclusive players like Yador, SSK, and Eon who did not attend a high number of events even when active. This lack of exposure, paired with being the second lightest character in the game, and having unimpressive attributes, led many to regard Kirby among the bottom of the barrel for most of Project M’s lifespace. P+ 2.0, however, saw a number of major changes to Kirby’s kit including an increase to his run speed, throw game potency (particularly the way forward throw combos now), and combo game with buffs to forward air, upsmash, nair, uptilt, and down b’s new functionality giving Kirby all new tools to push advantage with. These changes all seemed to be an effective way to make Kirby more meta relevant, but these improvements did not immediately yield results. A lack of representatives continued to be the major obstacle preventing Kirby from seeing sustained success, but nonetheless, Kirby climbed to 35th on the 2022 official P+ tier list, up from 41st on the last official 3.6 tier list. Perception around the character shifted when PMRank 2024’s #17 player Av committed fully to the character, dropping Lucas entirely, as well as when PMRank 2024’s #36 player Shenanigans left Tennessee to make appearances at multiple PMRank events. Using Kirby to take down established dominant players using throw mixups, hard read punishes, carefully placed backairs, and a whole lot of crouching, these players showed off what Kirby is capable of when pushed to his limits. His new placement solidly in the mid tier at 22nd is reflective of the work they’ve put in to get Kirby into the spotlight and hopefully an indication of future upward trajectory.

Ice Climbers
The Ice Climbers were a staple of high level play at the end of 3.6’s metagame, a trend which continued through P+ 2.0, featuring 2 players in the top 10 of 2023 PMRank. Ice Climbers were ranked 13th on the last official tier list, published in 2022, but by the end of 2023, many players were arguing that Ice Climbers may be top 5, or even top 1. This meteoric rise would come to a screeching halt when P+ 3.0 delivered a handful of nerfs to the character to rein in their more egregious options. The most significant of these changes was forward air being converted from a spike to a meteor. Now, instead of losing a stock at 30% to any grab near the ledge, players who can meteor cancel effectively find themselves reliably surviving much longer. Another nerf, occurring in tandem with the forward air change, is the reduction in the distance at which Nana begins forward throwing instead of up throwing while on stage. This effectively halves the distance at which the Ice Climbers can execute a handoff, which reduces their total guaranteed damage off a grab, and forces them to explore more traditional punish trees instead. An additional change was made to their down throw, which has led to a reduction in the efficacy of certain matchup-defining chaingrabs on characters like Lucas, Sonic, Meta Knight, and others. Additionally, this change also led to a slight downgrade in their punish game across the board, as the increased knockback growth allows opponents to get out of combos sooner with proper DI. While 32nd is the lowest Ice Climbers have been since the 2014 tier list, as players begin experimenting and rethinking their approach to the character and begin reinventing the Ice Climber metagame, they will hopefully be able to climb their way out of the dregs of the low tiers.

Mewtwo
First added in Project M 3.0, Mewtwo was instantly meta-defining with his game-breaking tools and obscene kill power. In these early years, he found his home with the best of the best in Mew2King, Emukiller, and Frozen, and would go on to be labeled a god-tier character at the end of 3.02. While his most ignorant option in hover-out-of-teleport was removed in 3.5, Mewtwo’s representation stayed strong through the 3.6 era with Frozen, the two-time top-10 Violet, and later CasinoWolf and Wfycat. However, the Covid years saw both a slew of nerfs from his 3.6 iteration and a dramatic dropoff in representation. Since our return from quarantine, Mewtwo’s sole appearances on the top 50 have been as one of Pikmon’s perennial tertiary characters. Time and time again, we have seen a lack of representation coincide with declining opinions of a character’s strength and, in this regard, it appears as though Mewtwo’s drought is finally catching up to him. After yet another top 5 placement on the 2022 community tier list, the playerbase is beginning to question his historical precedent of top-tier strength. Ask around, and most will tell you that he still has strong tools. Hover cancel aerials and an omnidirectional, actionable teleport are nothing to scoff at. But a new prevailing sentiment is taking shape – a view that takes into account his big hurtbox, slow ground speed, and staggering technical difficulty – concluding that he might not be the dominant force that he once was. Perhaps this new vision is correct, or perhaps Mewtwo is a sleeping giant primed for a resurgence. Only time will tell.

Zero Suit Samus
Zero Suit Samus has long occupied a strange place in the Project M metagame. Historically considered somewhere between mid- and high-tier, she has nonetheless had consistent high-level representation in Jason Waterfalls, Aidan, and Blank. That was until a stark dropoff in 2019, when she was left off of PMRank entirely. Despite this quiet spell for the character, many took notice of the fact that she had escaped the brunt of the nerf hammer coming into P+. During quarantine, she saw a shadowy rise in popularity among the reticent lords of NY/NJ, spearheaded by the all-time great Malachi and newcomer Stango. Upon the lifting of quarantine, these two utilized her top-tier attributes to great success, and she quickly became one of the most prevalent meta-characters of the 2.x era, being placed top-two on the 2022 edition of the community tier list. This momentum rolled over into 2023, when she peaked at six representatives on PMRank, with many players picking her up as a secondary. Then, in 2024, that number dropped all the way to zero. All at once, her strongest reps either quit the game or dropped her as a secondary. This coincided with P+ 3.0, which delivered unto her a bevy of hard-hitting nerfs. Her hurtbox size was increased, her weight took a hefty hit, and her most powerful options in bair, upair, and down smash were all toned down. But, in some ways, we’ve seen this story before. In 2019, ZSS had no players and only nerfs to show for it. 2024 looked much the same. Back then, all she needed was the backing of the game’s premier talents. It certainly feels as though she doesn’t have that same motion today, but who’s to say? Maybe her next transformative player is right around the corner.

Sonic
For the first time in Project M history, Sonic has fallen down the tier list. His peak at #4 on 2022’s iteration came at a time where the character was both very strong despite his nerfs in P+ v2.0, as well as one of his strongest periods of results throughout the game’s history. The two players leading the charge on modern Sonic, SipMastah and Motobug, haven’t deviated much from then; they both hit their all time highs on PMRank at #1 and #26 respectively, still placing highly and running circles around their competition. The shift in this list comes more from the perceived character strength outside of purely results with his additional nerfs in Project+ v3.0. With a change to his up throw that makes it still a strong, but not as consistent combo tool, the lack of stacked stun preventing up throw > down air loops, and a huge hit to his recovery, Sonic is the weakest he’s ever been. Only falling to #12 speaks volumes about his previous strength, though. As the fastest character in the game with some amazing moves and devastating punish game, there’s no doubt Sonic is still very powerful - he’s just toned down a little more than he used to be.
