Hello all, I'm totally stumped.
I feel like I'll never be able to beat my friends. I'm the only mid tier in Samus out of my fellow smashers here in my city. They all play marth or sheik, or peach or whatever. It seems like no matter how much I improve, they will always beat me. I'm really at a loss, I try to adapt and understand the matchup more and more, but I still come up short more often than not.

This Summer I've started to love melee again but I just keep losing. . I don't want my love of the game to fade away, but the frustration of just losing over and over again is starting to get to me.

As Samus mains, have you ever felt, I don't know... At a loss?

In my region, there has always been players I never could beat. Even though I improved and beat others I hadn't before, these players always beat me.
The thing is I was at a loss, but only compared to those who were improving at the same rate or better than me.
Last tournament I managed to win 3-2 against two of those players who kept beating me and placed 3rd, winning prize money for the first time.
Moments like that makes you realise that you are actually improving at a faster rate than your rivals.
When I see Plup, and the other better Samus players, I see hope, that I'm NOT limited by my character, and it's always possible to improve my game.

Dude Im even picking up puff to try and dual main her, some match ups its just better to have a secondary with an even match up than a better main with a 70-30 mu, as for what you should be doing, is watching what they are doing that is effective and understand their attack patterns, every player has them, and then just exploit and punish accordingly.

Maybe pick a higher tier secondary if you really want to win. The highest Samus is rank 27 nationally, after all, and there are 4 more Samuses in the top 100, so Samus has certainly shown her worth.

Plup is rank 23 in the MIOM 2014 Top 25, and would likely be top 15 or 20 if a new ranking were made right now... :)

I guess the point is: it's possible for a Samus player to be very, very good; maybe a Samus will never win a national, but unless that's your goal, just go ahead and play her.

I agree with the notion to pick up another character, but at the same time...I am against it. I do have my pocket characters, but I put all my heart into Samus. At times I do feel limited in her capabilities, but I have never given up.

How often are you practicing? I picked up Melee again about 7 months ago, and I still learning to consistently wavedash or L-Cancel. If you only picked Melee back up this summer, it may take longer than anticipated to become as good as you want.

God knows I am eons away from doing what I want to do...

Also, did Takumi ever change cars when he was in trouble? No, he stuck with his 86. (Initial D) :b:

Your mindset annoys me, oopsy :( . when I first started playing this game I never once thought my character was the reason I lost. I've only recently started to think sheik is a ridiculous match-up, but I still beat almost all of the sheiks consistently. My advice for improving is to set a goal and MEET that goal. My first goal was to be top 10 in Florida, second was to consistently get top 5 at local tournaments, third was to beat ColBol and fourth was to beat Hbox. Doing all that took a couple of years (And I'm still kinda working on that fourth one) but I was got dang dedicated.

As for picking a secondary... Don't. I truly believe that you will improve at a muuuch slower rate if you play multiple characters. Stick with your favorite until you have either exhausted that characters potential or your enjoyment for that character, then pick a secondary.

To emphasize what I said earlier, I can beat almost everyone in florida outside of top 8 with ALL the characters. Now you have to be a lot better than your opponent to beat his Sheik with your Kirby but it's possible, right?

I was about to post something similar to this, but mines is more about mental blocks. I keep losing (recently) to this patient ass Fox/Marth main. I went Sheik in the match-up and almost won, but I felt like a fraud. I am a top player in my region, but I hate how this dude is beating me with sheer patience. Thing is, I am also the T.O, Steamer and everything dealing with running a tournament at these events, so I can't play friendlies as much as I want. How can I win when I can't touch a controller until my time to play? I can't afford to not run a tourney I am the only T.O in the Bahamas....
