I just had an awesome match and all of you need to read this to undrstand how effective tripping is!

Me (falco) VS Marth VS Lucario VS Luigi WiFi match on luigis mansion. Everyone has 2 stock

Match starts and everything is even, luigi is pulling of some amazing dodges and Marth is comboing very well.
Luigi knocks Lucario out so he only has 1 stock left the Marth smashes me out.
I manage to get an assist trohy and it was Shadow! I manage to smash Luigi off and almost got Lucario but shadow went...

The a final smash ball came..... Lucario dashes towards it and opens it up surprisingly easily, he does his final smash which annihalates Marth and leaves me and Luigi with lots of damage but Luigi immediatly jumps up when lucario finishes and knocks him out like a pro!
So its me and Luigi we duel for a while until he lures me to the edge of the stage suddenly I make a wrong move and trip! But luigi jumped and kicked at me that very second meaning he missed he goes flying of the stage but before he recovers I spike him to a victory!

So tripping can be effective in the right circumstances!

it can be effective but think of it from his point of view, he couldve won if tripping wasnt put in the game.

You have the most disgusting luck I've ever heard of. (Compliment)

Tripping has given me the upper hand at times, and other times, it hurts. I've manage to survive making a wrong move because the foe, about to run me down, trips, thus messing up his focus and ends his combo. Other times, the same has happened in reverse, or one of us trips RIGHT INTO the other attack.

Overall though, tripping sucks. I don't quite understand it's purpose but to mess us up a bit.

I tripped right into the warp zone on intense boss battles right before Tabuu when I could have healed some damage with my last heart piece.

Luckily I got killed by his instant kill wave thing, but it was still one of those moments that makes you wonder why tripping is in the game >_>

Tripping may be useful depending on the circumstances but it has absolutely no strategic value since you cannot use it at will and because of its randomness. It is the worst thing that ever happened in the super smash series.

No, it's the worst thing that ever happened in the ENTIRE FIGHTER GENRE!
It's too random to even plan or account for. It can make a pro lose a lot of money.

Tripping can be accounted for, just like any random factor. There is little need to account for 2% damage difference on a smash, so that random part isn't looked at much. however, with the introduction of tripping, you see many people talking about ways to get around it. Someone said you could walk before running, and so far I've never tripped when doing that, but I don't know if that is legitimate.

however, when it comes to ACCOUNTING for it the best ways we know how, there is this. You can approach more often with short hops to prevent tripping in front of your foe. You can run less (which makes it more of a camping game, I know) and use projectiles. You can also approch witha f ull jump and from there you can air dodge and punish, make an attack, or double jump and come down on your foe after they miss you with an attack.

this may sound weird, but:

is there any chance that there's a higher probability for tripping against the person with a supposed advantage?

for example: let's say there's a 1v1 match going on, 5-stock, P1 is kicking P2's ***...is there any chance of maybe P1 having a higher frequency of tripping due to an increased stock count? this would, of course, come back to the whole "everyone-on-equal-footing" idea.

i've hardly touched the game on account of schoolwork, so i can't really test this myself...or has anyone else already done it?

in your head.
Hm, that was some good luck on your part.

Personally, I don't think there is any kind of "trip cancel". It's too random. But, I do think there's probably something you can do after you trip. Why else would they put such a random thing in? I dunno, maybe not. But we should be open minded about it, not just say "tripping sux!!" We've only had the game a week, a month if you imported. And it took, what, a year or so to find wavedashing? Give it time, guys.
