What does the back room think?

I'm not going to sit here and pretend that your opinions aren't more valuable than those brand new to the smash genre - I'm just wondering for curiosity's sake - which characters are in general consensus for being top tier as of right now?

I keep combing through threads to try to find an answer to this question and I constantly get mixed results mainly from people with post counts like mine and a join date of 2008 (albeit - worthless).

I just want an idea of what characters I should really be looking at - and yes - I choose my characters off of tiers... because I play to win. (mained Link in Melee - it was difficult to make mediocrity more than anything other than decent - I'm not going to go that route this time)

As of right now I'm maining Toon Link and Wario (for fun)- I feel that Wario, though limited by range, will be decent do to his air control, fsmash and other misc. attributes. I originally thought Toon Link felt like top tier material but after playing him for a couple of weeks I feel that his lack of non-projectile range and poor killing moves kind of hurts him. I don't know - just wondering what the people who "count" think (aka those who have had made great grammatically correct Melee posts in the past with an exstensive knowledge/experience of/with Melee).

I doubt even the people in the backroom are really placing any character anywhere. Since the tierlist is based off tournament results, and there haven't been many real tournaments... it's almost impossible to truly determine which characters are better than others.

No one's asking for a "true" tourney-results-style tier list, just thoughts from great players about which characters are good. If you don't think that great players playing other great players can give anyone an *idea* of which characters are good and which aren't just because they're not playing in huge tournaments, you're wrong.

Well, the basic question of "who is a good character?" could be answered by playing all of the characters and just seeing for yourself. Obviously, that type of question is going to get varying answers since some people are going to be more comfortable with some characters. Example: Just because Fox was top tier didn't mean most of the backroomers and competitive players used Fox; he just won the most. Chances are each person will give a different answer, so we will have a list of a ton of characters.

So it's kind of pointless to ask "which characters are good" unless you are just letting someone else pick your mains for you, especially at this point. That's why I don't really understand tierlist discussion right now anyway... regardless of what this thread is going for.

The way you pose this question makes it seem like you actually are only counting join date and post count as a reasonable measure of worth even though you stated something contrary at the beginning of your post.

The people that have been here longer are simply the people that know their way around terms and general definitions. I know I'm phrasing this poorly for lack of proper thinking skills at the moment, so I'll elaborate.

The people that have been here longer are the ones that know what makes a tier. They know why there aren't tiers in a game's early life.

The way to tell which character will end up being up there is by studying them. Only you can decide at this point, you can't be led to believe whatever someone who's been here a long time says.

Test characters out. Play with them. Watch videos of players that are experienced and determine for yourself who has strengths over whom. Decide which techniques will prevail over others and why.
In any case, if you play as each character individual for several days each, you learn their fighting style and you learn how to play as or beat them. When you've done all that, you can determine which character seems to be able to beat the most people, or the most used people, or which character, in theory, should be able to win a tournament.

And now that I look, it seems Chaos beat me to saying this. Heh.

Probably in front of his Wii
I (as evident in my post count) am brand new to this website and to advanced tactics, but have been playing super smash since its first iteration. I, personally, feel that in this game there will not be a tier as pronounced as in melee, nintendo did a much better job at balancing the characters in this one. Granted, there will probably be a Upper and Lower, but i suspect the upper will have around 15 characters in it. This, I think, is a really good think, especially with the edition of online play. I will not have to sit through 50 battles against the same character now.

Although I'm not someone who most people would say "count", I did have exstensive knowledge/experience of/with Melee, and I consistently find that Toon Link and Marth are generally accepted to be among the best in Brawl.

You're right - I think I'm just having lack of Brawl anxiety - I had to send my Wii and Brawl in to Nintendo the other day because I suddenly got the "cannot read disc" errors from my launch Wii (after playing for 2 weeks without error) - so I'm stuck speculating for a while :ohwell:

Playing Brawl and then having it taken away is like going into withdraws -
