Who did you expect to main, and who do you actually main now?

Before the game came out, I was expecting that I would main Little Mac just because I enjoyed playing Punch Out.

Now, I main Palutena, and my secondary is Ike.

I went into Smash 4 expecting to have my old Brawl main, back alongside . The demo proved to me that was here to stay as a full time main, but as I played the full game, wasn't meshing with me anymore. Probably a combination of changs to the character and changes in my play style. I ended up bringing back an old favorite from early Brawl, , as a secondary, and I also began playing as for fun and found that I liked her a lot.

Ended up maining Yoshi.
Seriously though, jokes aside, I was wanting to have Robin as a second main. I liked Shulk more though, so now Robin is my third favorite.

I was determined to get good with Megaman at first, in fact he was the only character I played in the 3DS demo, and I can still play him relatively well, but what eventually ended up happening was that my mains kept switching, first it was Megaman since I played him in the demo, I then gravitated to Bowser, then to Greninja, Little Mac, Rosalina, Dark Pit and Sonic.

Then the Wii-U version came out and at that point I couldn't even tell who my main was, it wasn't until one night at a friend's house in December where I finally discovered that my main is Mario, which makes sense cause, Mario was my main in Smash 64, and for a short time in Melee before Game & Watch took his place. In PM, Mario was one of my four mains so I guess I'm just destined to play, Mario.

I really wanted to main Mega Man and Little Mac. While I do main Little Mac in 3DS, I'm not good with Mega Man, which sucks.

I expected to main Olimar because he was my brawl main. I had not anticipated his massive change in playstyle, which really soured me on him (I'll still get good with him over time). Samus was a secondary for me in 64 and Melee. Brawl Samus was so bad I couldn't use her. After playing around with lots of characters she is my current main. I think she is pretty underrated (I don't think she is top 10 either though). Still feeling out many secondaries that could replace her though. I like to play a bit of a zoning game in Smash 4. I like Pac-Man, Megaman, Ness, DHD, Villager, Pikachu, and recently Peach a lot. I like Charizard more than I should.

I was really excited about Little Mac, but I hate playing as him.

I thought I was gonna like using Shuk alot more than I really do, I use Robin alot instead, Megaman is tougher to use competitively than I thought he would be.
didnt think I would be picking up G&W again but Sm4sh has me using him alot like Brawl did

I still love using the Links and Bowser-
very very glad how both seem so improved, even more than thee Melee versions (well Bowser at least)

villager is so cute but so creepy at the same time so she's fun to play~ and it really helps that Villager is a pretty viable choice for a main

I went in playing a lot of Samus, but eventually I realized that I'm not down with how she plays in 4. Falcon/Fox/Mario are my go-to characters as of now.

Before Lucario was announced, I planned on Fox being my main (because I didn't expect lucario to come back). Then Lucario was announced so I planned to main him and as expected I do. Now that Mewtwo has been announced, I'm sure he'll be my secondary like in Project M

I was going to main Ness and Diddy Kong. I ended up switching to Meta Knight because I felt Ness and Diddy Kong were too safe and I didn't feel special using them.

I'm even starting to become nervous about using Meta Knight because he's turning into a more popular character after what happened in the Mexico Grand Finals. If that does end up happening, I still have a lot of secondaries to use.

So I got three of them right at least...Didn't get the hang of Falco in this game, (actually haven't used him at all since his buffs so I may need to pick him up again)...but Yoshi was a pleasant surprise, always liked Yoshi but he never worked for me until this game so its like Yoshi and Falco traded spots...Roy was also a pleasant surprise as he reminds me of my melee days...

To answer both questions: Robin. The character just feels natural to me. I used Palutena a lot when I first bought the game, but decided to switch to someone with more flexible approach options.

When Ryu came out, I thought I would be terrible with him, but as it turns out, he's perfect for mine defensive playstyle.

I was originally deciding to main Olimar once again, then after hearing about his drastic-sounding changes I feared that maybe he wouldn't be my number 1 anymore, but after playing as him in a demo I realized that he didn't feel that different and even felt much better then in Brawl, so yeah. I ended up maining the character I expected I'd main. Fascinating.

Speaking of which, I keep on forgetting to pluck more than 3 Pikmin with Brawl Olimar now.

Heard that was really good from reviewers, so I mained him in the first few weeks. Then I decided he was ****, and fell back on my Brawl and Melee mains with just because.

I was a little lost when all the characters in this game were being revealed and kept hoping that my brawl main would stick around, but when was revealed as a stand alone, I knew had gone the way of the dodo. After that became apparent to me, I started looking for a new prospect, and settled on mostly because he was fun to play in Brawl and it seemed like they didn't change him much. But once the game came out, I found myself gravitating more and more towards . As the year has progressed, I've picked up a few other Mains/Seconds. First after Pac was , which I subsequently dropped for reasons unknown to me. Then I got really into customs and found that with his Dash Slash was so much fun. After him, I've grown a love for my waifu and then very recently I've begun to pick up and I've been having loads of fun with him.

For the newcomers I dropped all but and , while for my old mains I dropped and I don't use that much. I also picked up and again after ignoring them in Brawl. Finally I still use but not as much as I did in the Brawl days.

They ended up being my mains, but I was actually kinda surprised how much and possibly my absolute favorite character in the game clicked with me, considering all of them ( except villager ofc) were kinda meh with me in Brawl.

Current Mains:

1. I knew from the get-go I was going to main , whether I liked his playstyle or not, as he is my favorite all-time game character. Thankfully, I loved playing as him, so that worked out well. He also ended up to be one of my best as well.
   
2. was another character I loved as soon as I saw the trailer. Such a fun and quirky character. I didn't expect her to become my best character, however. That was a pleasant surprise.
3. has always been a favorite of mine since the 64 days. I'm glad to see he turned out pretty decent in this iteration.
4. I picked up when I decided I wanted to master a character that no one else seemed to ever play as. Considering her reputation as a bad character, I felt like that would be a fun challenge. Turns out, I love to play as her. She takes a lot of work to get good at her play style, but I think she is vastly underestimated.
5. 's versatility appealed to me as soon as I started playing as him and he continues to be my wild card character; he may not have the best win to loss ratio of my mains, but he has beaten opponents I couldn't scratch with the others.
6. I really do not like as a character, but I liked his concept in Smash, so I am glad he had Koopling skins! is my personal choice, followed by and . Another character I adore for the versatility and adaptability in battle.
7. and were characters who's concept appealed to me, but just didn't click in practice.

I expected to play mainly using Wii Fit Trainer, but it didn't work out; she wasn't a good fit. To say I play terribly as her would not be stretching the truth. I ended up bending more toward Ike and Jigglypuff as my "mains," and I'm also adversarial with Peach, Dedede, and Duck Hunt.

Was going to main ,, and . Ended up never really enjoying so I didn't play him. Liked playing and he was my main alongside , but after I started putting more attention on PM I thought it would be too difficult playing the two in different games. So I went with and . But after a little bit of tinkering I decided to just main alone.

Before I got the 3ds version I was super gungho about maining Duck Hunt because I expected him to be a fast, troll-y cartoon animal character like Pikachu (my main from every previous game).

However, I didn't end up putting the work in to get good at him. I was just drawn to other characters more, particular Bowser and Link after seeing the buffs they received from their Brawl counterparts. I still play Duck Hunt occasionally for giggles, but I don't think I'll ever really pick him up.
