So I went into a GameStop today. So, some lady is trying to preorder Super Smash Bros Brawl for her son. I was quite happy to see that everyone is interested in SSBB, but something bothered me. This GameStop happened to have a copy of Melee for the GameCube in stock. I talk to the lady and I recommend that she purchases Melee for her son as it is better than Brawl. Our conversation went like this.

"Hey, I would HIGHLY recommend you wait on Brawl. Your son won't like it as much as he did the other installments. Does he have Super Smash Bros Melee? It's a GameCube game."

"No, in fact, we don't even have a GameCube. We do have a few controllers. My son wanted them for some reason. "

"Ah, do you have a GameCube memory card as well?"

"We do in fact. Now that I think about it, it is a bit weird."

"Well, the Wii can play GameCube games. Melee is a GameCube game. You should pick it up. They even have it in stock!"

At this point I bring the Melee case over to her.

"See, here it is. The price is great for a game of this calibur. I highly recommend it. Your son will absolutely love it!"

"Well, won't Super Smash Bros Brawl be better because it's the new one?"

"That's the problem. Brawl is very shallow compared to Melee. Melee is the most competitive game of all time, has better balance and features better levels."

"Well, my son wants Brawl..."

"I'm well aware of that. See, the problem is, he will be disappointed. The game has many unfair features. Your character will even fall at random sometimes. Not to mention the levels in Brawl are extremely random and will make your son mad. The levels in Brawl work against you sometimes. I know it sounds weird, but Melee is superior. I've been playing in Melee tournaments ever since it came out and I've won over one-hundred thousand dollars so far. Melee has a stronger following. Trust me, he will enjoy Melee more than he will ever enjoy Brawl."

"Well... I guess I can buy both... He always enjoys the new Madden game as well as the old one."

"I wish my mom was as nice as you! Well, I really hope your son enjoys Melee!"

Needless to say, she purchased Melee. She also preordered Brawl.

Sadly, I was kicked out of the store for this. I was "interfering with business." I got them two sales, why are they mad?

The title is a bit misleading. I hadn't even read through your whole post before I realized that it's not really a statement about casual players so much as a story. You might want to change the topic title.

Oh no, did someone prefer brawl over melee.

This has got to be a joke. And if it isn't, you made a real idiot out of yourself. More depth? Better balance? How do you know all of these things? Even if you have played it, Melee's depth was not discovered until years later, and Brawl hasn't been out for a month...it's not even released here yet.

Actually, it's people like you who ruin Brawl. Melee is automatically better because it's supposedly "more competative?" Maybe the woman's son isn't competative. You don't know what he would like, and frankly you have no right to say which game is better.

You sound like a real douche. I mean seriously.

"I've won over one-hundred thousand dollars so far. Melee has a stronger following. Trust me, he will enjoy Melee more than he will ever enjoy Brawl."

Seriously.

...Right...I've played Melee so I understand how it feels. I think that when the vast majority of non smashers try to play, it'll be hell. Noob bashing online left and right. It's really gonna suck. Luckily for us at smashboards, we can get each other's Wii codes, and fight online with everyone who is not a noob.

Please, god, tell me this is a joke.

First off, the hell does this have to do with casuals? Second, the hell does it have to do with their relationship to 'the game'?

Third, kicked out of a gamespot?

I don't get the point, how does this make casuals ruin the game? Could you explain a bit more please. If going for Brawl first was your reason, then would the same argument go with Melee? where you recommend the N64 version first?

Just let the boy decide for himself... maybe he will like brawl more. No one knows for sure.
And above all, is kind of a lost of time to explain this specifics to a mom that really doesnt care and went there to buy something specially requested. And also, by analyzing the speech, it seems you were being kind of persistent and annoying... specially in something was had nothing to do with you in first place.

...*promised not to flame everyone earlier today*
Sigh, I don't see how you would get kicked out of GameStop...

Oh, wow.

Um, okay, if her son hasn't played Melee, how is he supposed to know if it's more 'shallow' than Melee or not?
What makes Brawl more shallow than Melee anyways? Wave dashing? Why the heck would her son know about wave dashing if he's never played Melee? All the extra 'depth' that Melee has would go completely unnoticed by him. I hope your story is fake.

The tittle should be edited:

"Why competative elitists ruin the game even before it launches. My Story!"

This thread is ********... the point the TC is making is ********, and this will only make casuals hate competitives more. Seriously guy... what the heck... Not every competitive player thinks Brawl is better than melee, in fact many of the bests are playing Brawl and enjoying it. It's far too early to make the claim that Melee is better, and it only shows how ignorant and stubborn you are by trying to get some random woman to buy melee for her son. There is no reason for this... this is inexcusable... Please refrain from making topics for a while, especially if you are going to act like a "competitive player" when you post crap like this.

I am far from casual. I've been to plenty of tournaments, and I've won my fair share, also. I use advanced techniques, and can integrate them into my gameplay. But either you're lying, or you have no life outside of Smash.
