Why do people grab, when they can smash?

Its jsut that grabbing is more safe, and leads to more damage.
lol, have you been reading what I'm saying?

When your opponent is open, there's no such thing as "safe". EVERYTHING you can perform before they can shield is safe. THIS IS THE BEST TIME TO USE A SMASH ATTACK IF YOU CAN!!! Knowing when these openings are separates the scrubs from the pros.

AND there's rarely any such thing as "leading to more damage". If you have a combo, then combo. For instance, Falco can Dair to Aerial pretty **** well, even at high percents, but if I'm Marth, and you're open enough for me to Hyphen Smash, I'd be a FOOL to grab you. Reliable damage is far more important. Rarely is your opponent ever in advantage after you hit them with a Smash attack.

If somebody is vulnerable, I don't grab or smash. I just fart on them. ;)

Grabs can lead into oter attack not just in the air

Example down grab with metaknight then down b into then easy 25 damage

I think that this is highly character dependant. If you, Pierce7d, main marth, then the better option is to clearly go for the smash, as your smashes are good and you have the tipper. Other characters do not have great smashes and rely more on their grab game, so it would clearly be advantageous for these characters to grab rather than smash. I dont think that you can just say that you have to smash otherwise you'll never be a pro. This may apply to marth but not to all characters so if it fits your gamestlye, by all means smash instead of grab, but just remember some of us dont use marth and do not have great smashes, so decide to grab instead.

depends on the percentage..i mean..if you smash with a low percentage, your just gonna knock them back and will just come straight back to the stage. if you grab you can starp up combos and then go for a smash..unless the person has like 100% you should probably grab

DThrow -> USmash or U/Bthrow to kill. :p And it's not just Oli who does way more by grabbing.

If they're at low percentages, it's better to grab. You don't want to waste a smash with stale move negation.

if you use attacks often they get weak
so you need to use the smashes for the kills
and before grab is the better solution

Well, after looking into things, I think I may have an answer to the thread:

Why do people grab, when they can smash?
...Because other characters have useful grabs

I would say because you can move around and then grab them, so its easier to place yourself where they will land in order to punish them. There are certainly times when you can smash, but times when you opponent can still be the one to choose if you are going to smash them or not. A grab is the safe way to ASSURE you get in some damage.

My two cents:
Depends, if you want a kill, or use a smash that has insane damage that won't ever be used normally, go ahead. But grabbing (especially for my main) is very useful, as at low percents, kill moves should be restored, and grabs can set up for plenty of damage options (if you don't believe so, try fighting a good grab game character, especially grab release stuff). Imo, most chars would benefit from smashing, but don't simply generalize that a smash is good with every character, since characters with good pummels (like Lucario and wolf) who also tend to have more damage racking metagames need the set up advantage, and with the occasional power throws (like Ness' crazy bthrow), it is better usually for safe killing, but with those that can spare good smashes (like Lucas, Marth, Ike, etc.) use them.

Grabbing often (not always though) provides more options. And it's almost always safer, unless, you're MK with his DSmash. And they don't grab too much when they can dsmash, if you haven't noticed.

It's all situational and depends on what character your using.
High damage = smash attack
Low-mid = grab in most instances

Using certain character's throws can set up for multiple attacks after, racking up more damage than smashes

There are no true combos in brawl though and as an avid zelda player, whose throws dont lead to many attack setups, I'd personally go for the smash.
