okay after reading most of this thread, I'll just say.. well here's my story
I played lightning forever (from 2002 to early 2006). Came to smashboards 06, learned the simple advanced stuff (wavedash sffl etc) on lightning (FOX TOO, for all those mentioning fox)
The day of my first tourney, my friend who was goin too told me that it wasnt on lightning, and I was like.. wtf?? those videos look like theyre on lightning though.. and he said something about the framerate on youtube combined with megapro speed (come on now, most popular smash vids are of top pros)
so I frantically practiced on normal mode to get used to it, and after 4 or so years of lightning its a liiiiitle hard to adjust to.. went to the tourney, I was able to wavedash easily however, but not multiple times in a row (ie after 3 consecutive wavedashes, i'd mess up and jump and be forced to attack, but can still wavedash when i got back down) OH YEAH and NO JOKE i was soooo annoyed as to why my character took so long to attack after landing (lag feels amplified a billion times more in normal), i'd have to tap the c stick like 3 times to get the smash out
after playing for a long time and im pretty good now too, I can say that lightning will not really help you. By focusing on normal melee, you strictly focus your development on perfecting the timing of your attacks. think of real fighting. by practicing 1000 variations of the same kick, you'll be able to analyze a kick well/ know which is good, etc.. whereas if you are already told which is best, and you practice that same kick 1000 times youll learn to master the perfect force to do the most damage.. and thats a concept from bruce lol
