Why snake and sonic instead of other ACTUAL nintendo characters?

Shock effect, experimentation, branching out. There's a lot of moral to the story I suppose, but I personally would have liked to see two nintendo characters instead of Sonic and Snake. Would have really made it Nintendo for me

Good characters no matter where they are from would make the game better. Sonic and Snake fit in really well and add to the game with unique play styles...

Snake because Hideo Kojima really really wanted him to be in Melee but they ran out of time.

Sonic because he was the most requested character.

I certainly didn't mean to come across as a "fanboy". I am just stating, that if smash has remained nintendo for the past years, the sudden change has moral to it. But my personal preferance, would have been to have nintendo characters instead. Fanboy? no, not at all. I play more xbox nowadays than anything. I just felt that smash should remain what it was, a game with all of nintendos hotshots in it. It's more just me preffering other characters besides Snake and Sonic. I never said as a whole they didn't fit. Having my own mind doesn't make me a fanboy

I didn't say you were a fanboy... Just that, that statement made you sound like one.
I understand that you would prefer to see more Nintendo characters in the game rather than third party characters, but after the addition of a few notable mentions (eg. Kristal, Geno) they would really be scraping the barrel. I mean, just how many more characters from Nintendo could they add?...

... I know that I for one would rather there were playable inclusions of Simon Belmont, Bomberman and Megaman, rather than Toad or Baby Bowser.

Really, I was looking forward to the third-party characters. All of the possibilities for other Nintendo characters seem insignificant compared to having much more popular characters to the game, even if they're from other companies.

You can't really get much less famous than ROB and Game and Watch (I'm leaving out Earthbound and Fire Emblem characters because of Japan), so I think Brawl was a very good time to consider characters outside of Nintendo.

Still, I really wish Nintendo would make some NEW characters

Let's see.. because Snake's creator asked Sakurai to put him in, and Sonic was the most requested character, in general.

Megaman, Bomberman, Phoenix Wright, G-Red from Gotcha Force, tons of characters from various Nintendo DS games...Sakurai could definitely add lots of good characters. I for one think that Geno would be a horrible character. I just don't get why anybody would want him in the game. -_-

But yes, I'm happy with Sonic and kinda happy with Snake. In any case, they help to increase Brawl's prestige as a game in my opinion.

The main problem is that Sakurai might stop adding Nintendo characters at all. That is an easy way to make the game.

To please fans for the most part with sonic as for Snake Hideo wanted Snake in melee but he never got in due to time constraints so they put him in this one.
