Will SSBM become less popular now that SSBB is out?

It is obviously too early to tell (hell, there's still a week til it's released in NA) but is it possible that SSBM will become something like SSB64 to SSBB?

What I mean to say is whether tournaments or regular competitive play will continue after everyone is "used" to Brawl?

Personally, I hope that Melee will stay in the competitive zone solely to the fact I never joined it due to prior lack of skill--and the fact I started the "advanced" techs only recently.

Could both ways... It could die or be just like SF 2 + 3... Time will tell..... In a month or 2

SSB eventually had the benefit of emulators/netplay. Even if Melee were to acquire that at some point, it would be moot to most since Brawl obviously beat it to the punch.

EDIT: Although tripping remains a dagger in Brawl's side...I'm not sure even casuals like tripping! Melee retains some unique advantages over the other two, sparse though they may be.

You only need to look at the new characters/stages/items, the fact that theres online play (something brawl will always have over melee) and that the gamefaqs forum has 40000 topics.

It's a real no brainer.

Yes Melee will, I'm betting a large amount of people will switch over to Brawl and Melee will be left to be only played occasionally or by a very few amount of people.

There's no telling what the hell Sakurai was thinking when he put in tripping...but then again he has yet to steer us wrong as far as I'm concerned, perhaps I will trust him this one last time.

i don't know, i think it will be pushed under the table at first kind of like 64 smash bros. was, but that is to be expected i would think. After a while I might venture to play melee, but it just won't be the same for me at least..

Of course SSBB will be more popular. So far it appears to be more balanced than Melee, and aside from tripping the competitive play looks good.

Why would you want Melee to stick around if you're just now learning the advanced techs? Are you already hating Brawl for it's lack of techniques you never even used?

We're hating Brawl for the lack of combos and it being a huge campfest.

Unfortunately, Melee will decrease in popularity, though I hope that major melee tournies will continue being held.

After mele came out me and my friends still played ssb64 just not as much as mele, I still see a 64 tourny occasionally, I'm sure ssbm will not completely die out.

Basically this. I think there will be some tournies and casuals going around in melee. But Brawl is just going to wipe the streets.

melee should die ..we been playin it for how many years? 7...?
I've never thought about it that way.

But possibly there is a chance that Melee is so legendary it stands the test of time?

For those who dislike Brawl's apparent lack of competitiveness, what is SSB4 turns out the same way? Will you accept it? Or will you turn back to Melee, since you didn't like Brawl?

With all this happening, what will happen to poor old SSB64?

Melee will be forgotten almost completely by the end of the year. Sad, because Brawl is a pile of crap.

Brawl will be more popular because new players are flocking to it an effort to be "pro" at it. I think in time Brawl competitive play will prove to be quite sub par and competitive gamers will return to Melee. Actually I'm really just hoping and praying for this. More likely people will stick with Brawl because it takes all of about an hour to learn and doesn't have as many "glitches and exploits LOLZ" and all the players new to SSB will love it. Hopefully a small but hardcore group will stick with the superior game.

Overall, Brawl will definitely exceed Melee's popularity due to it being new and casuals being immediatly drawn to the newest, shiniest versions of a game over a older, potentaly better version of a game, but the competitive community will probaly end up changing what it favors over time. The first few months, like the ones we are in now, will definitely have Brawl be more popular because it is new, but it's longevity comes into questioning. If Brawl does turn out to have some considerable depth to it, then Brawl will become the next big game in the competitive community and Melee will become a nitch game, but if it is really is as shallow as many signs are pointing to, then Brawl will ultimately be abandoned and, depending on how many people jump ship from Melee to Brawl and how those people react to Brawl not being up to par with Melee, the competitive community will either be more tight nit and connected on an issue and stronger then ever, or completly wiped out.
