As a middle man in this whole debate, I think you make quite a good little argument. I've seen many anti-tourneytard comics and stories, but the analogies are actually pretty good in this certain comic. Although there is a noticeable lack of wind factor mentioned in the comic, and I think that's about as random as you could have gotten with the Golf route. Oh well, I like the comics that guy does anyway.

It doesn't really matter how solid the argument in the comic is though since this is Smashboards, and you know there is never going to be an intelligent debate over the 'competitive vs casual' debate because there is so much ignorance on both sides most of the time. The only way to win is to not participate.... and I'm pretty much gonna do just that after this post since this is going to be one hell of a circlejerking trainwreck of a thread until some mod decides to lock this thread.

Also, gb2/bed/ Donkey Kong.

Not drawn very well... But funny nonetheless. Pretty much sums up Smash Bros.

haha that got better as it progressed, fairly decent satire, but a bit hard to follow. hahaha "your just jealous of my advanced trench game". I found that humorous as a competitive player

Except when they do, because it's how they play and they don't like the idea of "crazy" level / items on friendlies.
So? That doesn't mean you have to play with them or like them. Even my casual friends turn off some of the sillier items. Everyone plays how they want, and this whole debate is incredibly tiring.

And as satire goes, this was pretty piss-poor.

Agreed. I love both sides of the game - When there's a bunch of people over and we're just having fun, all items are on and any level is go... but at the same time, when it's just me and my brother, or certain other 'rivals' of mine, the matches are legitimately more enjoyable without things like items or smash balls.

It's really a shame that our community's so divided in this way. A handful of extreme individuals (those who demand no items/final destination regardless of the circumstances, and those who cry and blubber incessently when items are even toggled to 'low') have turned the majority of the online smash community against itself, pitted againt each other for no reason because of this silly preference.

You'd figure that our main source of criticism would be from fighting game 'purists', who feel smash bros isn't a legitimate test of skill because it dares to be different. But, nope, it's from each other. : |

W/e, though, nothing I say will change the minds of either campaign. Still, that comic was pretty funny. :chuckle:

The only items I have on right now are status items: (Mushrooms, Metal, Curry, Bunny) and The Smash Ball.

Sometimes, I add in Summons(Pokeball, Assist Trophies) and OHKO items (dragon) when I'm boreder.

People play differently. That is why Simplicity is the true complexity of differentiation (don't bite it.) With simplicity, you can play how you want, develop strategies, and experience more to the point where its epic. (Smash) Other games, that are ingrained in a set mindset you have to do what they expect to win. Lvl up, Buy Weapons. Again, each game is complex in their own way, but attaining it is different.

And in the days of Melee, if you don't play with them... then you lose them as fun to play with. Brawl has opened up a lot of options on playing with people who you can agree to play with. But prior to the wifi, one would be out of luck if you didn't want to follow the "tourney" setting all the time.

I mean, heck. I play Pokefloats and Brinstar Depths all the time. If I had three friends who would refuse to play those stages I'd be wounded at both their intolerance to what I enjoy.

I'm glad there's someone here who is also remotely intelligent about this whole debate, at least.

The only ideal way to play Brawl is to just play it. Don't force yourself into only playing with items on v.high New Pork City, or go itemless in Final Destination. Just do BOTH, and maybe even some other silly little schemes in the middle of that! Smash Brothers has tons of options that promote enough variety and freshness that can last for years, so I don't see why so many people just choose to resign themselves to only one playing style... it must get pretty depressing when playing to win becomes your only agenda for this game, or just going LOL SO RANDUM!! XDD all the time. Sure, some items might be broken and annoying, but blanking them out forever is just the immature baby's way out... I can side with it happening with tournaments where people bet too much money on this sort of thing, but there's no point in limiting your gameplay at any other time.

Everyone by now should know the person to blame for all this is Dylan_TNGA and how he reacted to all the DOJO updates about how Brawl wasn't going to be a rehash of Melee like he wanted... I still sometimes wonder why he hasn't been permabanned, since he was pretty much the first target and now it's just grown to completely curse Smashboards AND several other places to eternal arguments with each other over this depressing rubbish. Is there no justice in this world?

But still, both sides are right, and both sides are wrong... it's a war that can only lead to casualties besides the ones who just forget all this rubbish and actually just play Brawl. I can't do that at the moment since I'm one of the unfortunate souls who is in Britain and doesn't want to get a freeloader, so I'm screwed.

I'm rather disappointed at the lack of rage in this thread at the moment. Maybe it's too early.

I dunno if I should laugh or be frustrated at the lack of understanding of the competitive community. Aw, I can do both <3

I don't think it's making fun of competitive smashers. It's making fun of tourney***s.

The whole 'lack of understanding' thing works both ways, actually. From what I've seen on both sides, there just seems to be a whole load of inane propaganda spread about the enemy side and as such, both have begun to develop a seething hatred for each other. There is no longer room for compromise or intelligent debates, only war.

And war never changes.
Competitive Smashers normally aren't that bad, but there's quite a few certain individuals in this place who really do rant on and on about Smash Brothers like this... like the Dylan_TNGA person I mentioned in my big wall of text not too long ago. It's justified, yet overblown at the same time.

I'm sorry, but i read this (as a competitive smasher) and didn't find it funny. I showed it to my friend (who is a casual smasher) and he didn't find it funny. Its just not funny, unless you like obvious metaphors and badly drawn cartoons.

Well, since it's just a comic I won't get angry about it, but it really makes competitive players sound like ***** >_> (but it was still funny)

I mean... if people don't have fun doing something, they don't have fun. It doesn't matter if it's a setting on smash or croquet. They don't stop having fun just to piss you off.
