But bringing our systems and controllers is half the fun..

plus flatscreens usually lag hard.
Sounds interesting though. Are you guys affiliated with the Gigs tournaments at all?

We are not affiliated with GB at all.

The screens we use are some of the best gaming screens you can get. We run all of our X-Box 360's through component cables and have never had an issue with lag on the TV's.

Gigs kinda controls the Orlando scene. Plus we got our SP with them which is why I asked if you're affiliated. Months and for some people, years of hard work won't be considered =(

I'll probably show up, but not play. Just to check you guys out ^_^

Giga might currently own the Smash scene, but there is no way they will be able to keep up with what we are doing for release / afterwards. Not to bash on them, they're their own thing, but we will be handling Smash like no one in Florida.

Tournament Info

Hey Dumpster,

I was just wondering about the tourney mentioned above. I have a few questions:

1) I live in Sarasota, over 2 hours away, will the tourney begin at 1:30pm or does registration and preparation begin at 1:30pm, what time do you recommend I be there by? (I was thinking 12:45pm)

2) Will I be able to register the DAY OF the tournament with the $20 entry fee?

3) How many people do you have signed up already? Will there be 50+ people there?

4) Do you know if there is any possibility that there will be sponsors scouting for pro players there such as MLG?

I will probably be there even though its over a 2 hour drive from where I am, but I'd like to know the answers to these questions...
Thank you and I appreciate it...

Sorry for the delay in answering, had a day off and was out and about all day.

1) We switched to a double elimination format, so the start time is going to be moved up to a bit earlier in the day. I will find out tomorrow and come back to update everything.

2) As of right now, yes. But I have to check with the boss on this one. I know we're going to have an online registration process set up this week. Again, as soon as I know something, the Smashboards will know.

3) We currently have 20+ people signed up. These are just normal customers that we have for the most part. We assume there will be more than 50 people. Not many people know about us yet, but we're working on it.

4) Not sure on the sponsorship deal. I haven't heard any word of MLG picking up Brawl, but I'm sure something might get worked out with the top few players? Not my call though.

If you have anymore questions, feel free to shoot me an email at Dumpster(at)hardknocksorlando(dot)com

Hey, you still have that the tourny starts at 1:30pm, is the starting time going to be pushed forward?

Also, I wanted to know about registration and if you were really going to have an online registration process set up this week, because there are only a few days left until the LATE registration begins...

I'd like to register ASAP, but I'd rather do an EARLY registration.
Hopefully you guys will get the online registration set up before the 23rd of March...

Thank You...

I wanna try to get some actual competition pre-tournament instead of just playing my friends. How many Brawl setups do you have already? Are any reserved for 1v1 matches?

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing about the starting time. you said you may have to start early do to double elimination (which is awesome, single is too upsetting). and wondering the same about the online registration, don't really feel like going a few miles when I can do it from home, I know sounds lazy.

Oh and what's this thing I read about character availability? can there only be a certain amount of each character or something?

Starting time is at 1:30pm. We haven't announced a list of characters yet. . We just wanted to make sure that everyone was unlocked on all Wii's before we had a definitive answer.

The map selection will be adjusted a bit more, and some final tweaks will be made to the structure this weekend. After that we're done fiddling with it. NO 2v2 this tournament. We want to get a feel for how many people are interested in this, and the response locally has been very positive.

Also, we have updated our online purchaseing, so if you want to still get into the pre-registration, you can do it here:

https://www.hardknocksorlando.com/merchandise_gametime.php

Just go down to amount of time, and choose Smash Brothers Brawl. It is 12 dollars instead of the 10 due to taxes and credit card surcharges. If you do not have an account name yet (ie you haven't been here before) put in your first and last name as your User Name and we can create your account when you arrive.

Okay I just tried entering my credit card information several times and it keeps declining me. I'm typing the number in correctly. What's up?

Don't worry if you don't get a specific user name to your signup. We will base it off your full name as well, so there will be less confusion.

Got a lot to ask and say...

If you honestly expect to take on the Smash scene, you better recognize that the Wii can only natively output 480p and anything else WILL CREATE MORE LAG. Don't be silly.

I'm still signing up though.

And what is your stance on stalling in matches? Generally I would assume its counter-productive for a tournament so I'd hope you'd ensure some kind of means to deal with people that stall in matches.

Getting all the characters shouldn't be a difficult task. 450 matches (the amount needed to obtain all the characters) can easily be accomplished within four hours (approximately) of play through Special Brawl on these settings:

  • % Stamina: Stamina
  • Size: Mini
  • Head: Flower
  • Speed: Fast

Set all characters to random with CPU's and give everyone 1HP. The match will end the second it starts so they go by pretty quickly. Since there is at least another week before your tournament, you guys don't really have an excuse not to have all the characters possible at this tournament.

Also, since we can bring our own controllers I hope you'll appease our need for customized controls by letting us transfer our name tags so we can use our control settings.

And not that I'm trying to throw a whole lot at you, how did you decide what is counter-pickable? Did you go by any standard or have you checked with the Smash Back Room suggestions?

Stages for Counterpick:
* Great Sea (I assume you mean Pirate Ship since there is no Great Sea stage)
* Pictochat (I hope you reconsider this stage due to its random and overly easy deaths due to its hazards, such as the fire and missiles.)

^I was told that someone was bringing an SD card with their memory to ensure that all units have the characters and stages.

Is there a list of SBR stages made public? If not what else is there to go by other than what seems to be broken and what doesn't?

Unless they found a way to break the copy protection on the save files they will have to get the characters on every Wii. Smash Bros data other than certain Vault data can not be copied.

Dumpster. I love what you guys are doing with this.

I just found out about your location through my brother who Did the Combat and said it was out of this world.

I used to run various tournaments For Smash Bros. As well as street fighter. You can GoogleMyName Alex Jebailey for various info if you'd like.

I'm definitely going to come out and check your establishment and I wish you guys all the best success. I've always looked for a place to help with Gaming tournaments and get people to come out(I know all the sites to hit up and advertise for any game you can think of except LAN)(Fighting games are my forte, not so much Smash). Look forward to entering the tournament and checking you guys out.

Yeah I owned that place for DDR and CvS2 in 2004(God I'm Ancient now). I miss going to UCF and not working in the real world lol, Where I could skip class and play CvS 2 all day and still graduate with flying colors in computer engineering . If you've ever heard about my 86 win streak at CvS2, I assure you it's no urban legend. Finally I begged people to stop wasting their money and let the computer beat me. OH the memories.

Anyways I just got back into smash cause I have a WII and finally a reason to play on it.

That's my friend code add me sometime, I need some local people to play online with I always get lag with randoms.

I will say though Brawl is so much slower then Melee, It's just not the same.

See you around

^ Yeah, but think of the difference between SF2 and SF3. It's a different game, but that doesn't make SF3 worse than SF2. Anyway... My freshman year at UCF was 2005, so I'm not sure if I saw you there or not. But yeah, I heard about your 86 win streak, and Patrick told me about your Blanka vs Blanka's.. lol RC madness

335137289031 is my Brawl Code.

Jebailey is just a troll as far as many conventions where game tournaments are concerned. He really isn't that great at Smash (never was) and exaggerates his victories. He's an obnoxious person in the tournament scene and I think everyone in Orlando could do without him.

Anyways I just got back into smash cause I have a WII and finally a reason to play on it.

You only got into Brawl because you got owned in Melee. I remember your complaints, first it was items, then when there were no items, it was because of Fox, etc, etc...

I never got that good at Melee, Cause I never even owned a Gamecube. For someone who didn't even own the system to place high in a few smash tournaments, I think I did well. But I appreciate your concern. See you in the tournament :). I may get annoying sometimes(I like to get attention, But I've done more for the orlando tournament scene by getting the word out there(not for smash but other games) to bring people together and have fun and that's what gaming is all about.I wouldn't take me too seriously anyways :).

Luigi Factor, Look forward to playing with you again.

Wow, I remember that day. I walked in when you were around 40 and was like WTF, but didn't know it went all the way to 86 O.o

I remember when I was a Freshman, Wackadoo's was packed every M W F for CvS2, MSHvSF and even SC2 at times. Seemed like it got more dead every year though, haven't been back in a while since my last semester is off campus.

I'll post my friend code later when I can look it up.

I wouldn't have said anything normally, but even noticing your condescending tone towards Dumpster about the tourney I'd say your attitude is no picknick either...

I was excited when I saw UCF listed as an Apex arena on SRK before I attended UCF back in 2005, but then I was sad to know that a lot of the main members who hosted the tourneys didn't attend anymore. =(

Right, if your behavior is anything like it was previously, then yes the Orlando Smash tournament scene could do without you. Doesn't mean I think you shouldn't join in the scene, I just think your immaturity can be done without.

Telling a business that lag is bad when they think it won't be important doesn't mean I have a poor attitude. I'm just voicing my thoughts on what might be expected of them.
