Public Domain Hero Shooter
Despite the timing, this is not (fully) a Marvel Rivals "cashgrab" I've had this idea for about 2 years now, has a lore background and everything I'm working on, though I won't go into detail here, only mentioning lore decisions if it reflects on gameplay or is just funny. Characters aren't directly lifted from the source material and are changed however I see fit.

I have a lot of characters for this project, but I'll only mention the launch roster I have in mind, 4 characters for each class, might do more seasons later if the reception is good, might even reveal some more of the lore if asked.

Anyways, there's 5 classes, let's start.

Assassins
Your standard attacker class, either from ranged vantages or up close!​
  • Snow White - Fairest of them all, wielder of Excalibur, daughter of Morgan Le Fey. Your standard swordfighter.
  • Van Helsing - Monster Hunting Gunslinger, Dracula's arch-rival. Your standard ranged fighter, with a few tricks in his sleeves.
  • Uncle Sam - The president of the game's USA equivalent (No real countries exist in the lore). Fights with boxing skills and guns.
  • Cupid - In-universe he's literally just a Pit knockoff because I think it's humorous. A sniper.
Tanks
Big bulky characters.​
  • Santa Claus - Has some support elements.​
  • Humpty Dumpty - A giant cannon automaton shaped like an egg.​
  • Bigfoot - I don't think I need to say anything here.​
  • Pete - The big cat-bear guy. Has a move where he spits chewing tobacco at opponents.​
Supports
Characters that help in battle without directly fighting.​
  • Victor Frankenstein - Uses lightning to overcharge and heal allies.​
  • Sherlock Holmes - Uses investigation powers to discover the opponents' secrets and find other things.​
  • Big Bad Wolf - I associate the wind with healing and stuff in general.​
  • Mrs. Claus - Not only heals but can summon gingerbread men that help everyone.​
Mages
Magic users with wilder abilities.​
  • Morgan Le Fey - The standard "default" mage. Also the main villain alongside the next character.
  • Dracula - Moustached Menace. Shapeshifts and summons dark forces.
  • Tooth Fairy - Teeth powers. Will not elaborate.
  • Grim Reaper - Actually a pretty good guy.
Troublemakers
Class of characters that are typically small and fast and can wall jump like Mario.​
  • Mickey Mouse - Self Explanatory.​
  • Gremlin - Can tamper with others abilities.​
  • Red Riding Hood - Baba Yaga's granddaughter.​
  • Easter Bunny - Can do the propeller thing with his ears.​

What if Smash 64 was only allowed to use exactly 4 series?
A little more sensible than my usual Smash rosters just given the extra odds stacked against the series in this timeline, and avoids complex body shapes due to both practical feasability and potential first impressions. Replace Pikachu with Rattata for the Authentic Artistic VisionTM.

She doesn't wield excalibur, but in the comic book series "Fables" She did use the Vorpal Blade that felled the Jabberwock in one swipe a number of times.

...And had Prince Charming teach her swordplay to take revenge on the dwarves... it was a weird series.

But if the title is Smash Brothers wouldn't their surname be Smash so its Mario Smash, Luigi Smash, Link Smash, etc.

Yeah its one season bigger than DBFZ but IMO FighterZ should have had a final season 4 in first place so lol. Also I know having three Luffys and 2 Zoros sounds lame but tbf that's exactly what they would do in an actual game, specially the part of having the pre-timeskip versions as the DLC ones. If I had to make a list of some honorable mentions it should be Gild Tesoro, Cavendish, Emporio, Kaku, Cracker, Bon Clay, Z, Hody, Douglas, Shiki, Magellan and Arlong).

  • Luffy: His New World appearences uses Haki armament for his strong attacks, Gear 2 for his special skill, Gear 3 for his EX moves and Gear 4 for his super moves, Gear 5 in this form is just a cinematic super. Grand Line Luffy instead is more simple, using the special skill for some simple special moves, using Gear 2 as an install like super and Gear 3 for other supers. Finally Gear 5 Luffy is basically UI Goku.
  • Zoro: Zoro is a stance character, using regulary both One Sword Style and Two Swords Style for his normals, when using his special skill he adopts a position that allows him to perform Three Swords Style techniques. King of Hell is an install super while he uses a single Foxfire Style technique as a different super, finally he does Nine Swords Style for his finisher. Grand Line Zoro is a rushdown instead being far more simple to use.
  • Sanji: Sanji is a rushdown character who has a special movement option as Sky Walk. He of course fights with his Black Leg Style, showing techniques of Diable Jambe and Ifrit Jambe for his special skills, supers and finisher in the case of the later. When fighting against a girl, Sanji's moveset is completely different and weaker, being just him being lovestruck. You are better using your other two teammates instead.
  • Nami: Nami is like Nine in BlazBlue, with her attacks casting different sorts of climate effects and using her special skills allows her to do a specific special Zeus transformation cast with the combination of the last 3 elements.
  • Usopp: Ussop is a tricky zoner-trapper who tries to mantain as far of battle as possible, with the special skill he fires special seed bullets. Like Joseph in HFTF, Usopp has a special backrun that is faster than the rest of characters.
  • Chopper: Chopper uses different transformations on the fly for his attacks, thought one of his main strengths is being able to heal his allies and himself. His supers allows him to use a rumble ball to further forms. Monster Form is his finisher.
  • Robin: Robin is a grappler and her special skills makes her spawn arms from the stage to make long range grabs. Demonio Fleur is her finisher.
  • Franky: Franky is a power type character who requires to constantly recharge Soda to mantain his strenght. He uses multiple gadgets in his body to fight. His finisher is the General Franky. Franky has a special taunt that presses his nose, changing his hair for the rest of the match.
  • Brook: He has a special super where he can turn back to the fight if he is defeated mantaining enough power meter, since he is already dead in first place so when defeated his soul mantains around.
  • Jinbe: Fights with his characteristic fishmen karate and fishmen jujutsu styles.
  • Sabo: Sabo would be an all-rounder and his special skill would be like an easy command special move, turning him into a beginner friendly fighter.

A WB hero shooter. I try to choose characters that can canonically have guns or some sort of projectile, with a few exceptions that could work as close quarters characters. This is why some "obvious characters in a WB crossover" are missing like the Scooby doo cast for example.

This is a great roster + one of my favorite types to see, and I think you did a good job of balancing icons, distinct genre reps, uniqueness, not over-representing one company, all that. Seems like it goes by when a series debuted rather than just the character, given Sephiroth coming before Sonic. The really old school characters, Carmen, Kunio, Slime, Bella, and Octane all are choices I would’ve made, too. Only one I don’t know offhand is the Dark Souls character(?) between Steve and Octane, but I can guess that’s who they are.

Did multiple Brawl sized Smash rosters for multiple generations of Nintendo consoles, from the NES up to the Switch. Handhelds got lumped into the consoles they coincided with, aside from a Game Boy/Game Boy Color roster, and Wii U sort of got absorbed into the Switch, too. No Virtual Boy, sadly. (I’m not sure I could wring a 39 character roster from that. Barely has enough for a 12 character roster!)
