The confirmations of Rainbow Road and an Elimination style Battle Mode were within expectations and I'm glad to see them.

Also yeah no more new characters, like I thought would be the case.
It was elimination? I thought it was point based?

This could've been an overview trailer. I really thought they were gonna reveal something unexpected, the rewind feature was cool but apparently someone revealed that 4 hours before the direct from another stinking preview event video, I really think those ruined the direct

Incredible that this Direct basically just spoonfed info to us that we all already knew. If anything, it seemed more directed toward people who have never played a Mario Kart game before in their life.

Guess Diddy Kong, Kamek, and Petey really are gone, huh? And the Free Roam content wasn't as much as I was expecting.

This could have been an email.

So I guess the roster is just... like that, and I really hate that costumes are separate slots in the character select screen. that's super unintuitive. what was wrong with the sub menus from MK8?
Nintendo games always have these baffling monkey's paw qualities to them where the game itself will be very good but there are design decisions that make the experience more frustrating, even if said design flaws are very easily avoidable. Prime example are the single-line scroll menus consisting of thousands of items in TotK and EoW, single island per system for Animal Crossing, etc.

That... was more disappointing that I expected. Some things certainly caught me off-loop like Rewind and it was nice to see new techniques better explained... but it was more or less what we've already come to know, and Free Roam's shown to be more under-utilized than we made it to be.

I think Nintendo really could have done with having a more smaller-size demo to not spoil this whole bunch at once, and dedicated more time on things they still left somewhat on the table (like the new vehicles, interacteable background elements, and especially that huge truck that they shoved on Game Chat-portion instead.) :025:

Also, I'm guessing no new characters? Bummer as I was kinda getting excited on some possibilities not yet shown in this game (Sorry Reznor). But I might be wrong, I do wanna see Tokodon and Batadon if possible.

And... damn. I really have to see Diddy and Kamek not allowed to race again in transition between Mario Kart 8 DX BPD to this.

The game feels 70$ at best for me right now.

Underwhelmed is the word, I think. The game still looks very, very fun and I'm excited for it but this really did feel like just an extra-long overview trailer.

Don't think there was any new Swoop footage either. Big sad hours. (I probably just missed it since I was watching on mobile.)

I love the new traversal mechanics like Power Jump, rail grinding and wall riding.

I don't really have any interest in all the open world stuff though. I never needed that in Mario Kart.

I'm surprised how much classic Mario music is in this.

I thought it was okay. But then again, I didn't spoil myself on any Mario Kart World footage aside from the Treehouse footage, so some of the stuff shown was new to me.

That said, aside from the new Tomodachi Life, we haven't seen anything regarding Miis for Switch 2, haven't we? I wonder why.

They didn’t even reveal 200cc (even though it’d be so fun in a game like this…)
(Well, unless the loading times are too slow for that to actually work. I’d hope the SD Card Micro Expresses would’ve fixed that, but idk. I wish someone would outright tell us.)

On a side note, you can still really, really see the framerate drop in 4-player splitscreen.

I'll be honest. I'm currently a little underwhelmed with Mario Kart World.

There's a ton I like. I love the huge roster, and the costumes and the idea of the open world. I like missions and the new gameplay tweaks.

But there's just little things that detract from the experience. The roster is missing some should be essentials. The menus are laughable. Some features like 200cc being seemingly missing has me a little worried.

I'm still positive towards the game. There's a lot to love. But I'm not sure if this will hit the same way as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

I guess we'll need to see if there's anything unrevealed when the game comes out. Sure, it's Mario Kart which means that's on the unlikelier side, but Nintendo has kept very notable stuff secret before. Before Zelda Tears of the Kingdom came out, I'm pretty sure we knew absolutely nothing about the Depths until after it was released.

Well, that was a big nothingburger. If they really cut 200cc, that might be a dealbreaker for me. Rest of the game looks fine (though Free Roam looks kinda empty), but 200cc should just be there.

Dawg they turned him into a bike 😭
They will do ANYTHING but add the cool characters to this game, bro. Least I can pretend to play as R.O.B. again...

I did spot a sort button on the character select screen
If that just sorts all the like characters together (e.g. all of Mario's alts will be placed next to one another on the character select) then it's still a lazy solution to a problem the developers created themselves.

It's ridiculous how many of those dots there are under the character select and it'll be a slog scrolling through them all.

Honestly this direct reaffirmed me that I should just wait and not get the S2 at launch. I definitely will be waiting for a price cut or I'll get the thing and its games secondhand because this title does not look like it's worth 80 dollars.

I don't think any game should cost 80 dollars; I've gotten so much mileage and content out of 5 dollar purchases like Terraria to know that charging over 60 dollars for any game is a scam.

Honestly, I think the information in this direct should've been included in the Switch 2 Direct, since that was an hour and I'm convinced you could shave five minutes off this video given how little is revealed.

Dunno why they thought overplaying their hand by hyping up a Mario Kart Direct only to show basically nothing was a good idea. Seems like it just deflated a lot of the already struggling hype after game prices and whatnot.

Not the first time that happened

Also, we got a helicopter!

Why on earth did they not dedicate a part of their Direct for this? I would have had more things to hype or go awed about, and raise more intrigue than what we got so far. (A more "overview" trailer than a Direct...) :falco:

Mario Kart World looks pretty cool and it has a lot of fun-looking features…but I'm not sure about how they seem to be handling the character selection screen, especially the costumes. Why couldn't they just put them in a sub-menu like the Yoshis for MK8?

Maybe they thought it looked cool having them as full size icons, to show off the work of the 3D artists. But they could still have the full size icons in the sub-menu, so…

Well, that was a pretty meh Direct. I was planning on waiting til I get the bundle during the holidays anyway, so hopefully by then Nintendo adds some cool post-launch stuff.
On that note...I mean, let's be real. There is absolutely the possibility that Nintendo will do a paid DLC for Mario Kart World regardless of its base price tag, especially if it sells gangbusters.

I feel a bit selfish being disappointed in what was shown off today knowing how much this game is achieving in its own right, but I think it was a mistake to paint this as a formal Direct and for Doug Bowser to start talking about how the $80 will be worth it once you see more. Unless he was talking about P-Switch missions and charge jump, I didn't see much today that validated this any further than it already was.

So it left me feeling a little underwhelmed. Mission Mode could have been much more than this I feel, even though this will probably be fun enough. I was hoping Free Roam felt like more of an investment aside from wandering about, I hope that there are a lot of secrets they're just not disclosing right now. It's unclear if we've seen every character / enemy type but I'm just going to assume we have. It just leaves me confused why we aren't getting a Luma alongside a Pianta, or a Thwomp if other limbless enemies are on the table. Battle Mode is back... cool, I would have liked to see more of those courses admittedly.

Again, in a vacuum this game is looking like a great time and a valuable package. The framing / rhetoric from official sources just convinced me to raise my expectations a tad, assuming we were missing out on some big reveal that would make $80 feel like a slam dunk. I appreciate all the time that must have went into making all these courses fully explorable, but I can't help but feel like they were propping it up to be a little bit more.

Unless I am missing something, the new characters don't have confirmed costumes. It's not because they are mostly enemies since the ones that are returning such as Koopa and Shy Guy have costumes.

On that note...I mean, let's be real. There is absolutely the possibility that Nintendo will do a paid DLC for Mario Kart World regardless of its base price tag, especially if it sells gangbusters.
Its happening regardless outside of maybe costumes being free updates.

I don't think adding new characters will be free since they would have locked lot of the characters that are already revealed behind updates like how Tennis Aces only having 16 characters with 14 being free later on.

I should probably warn everyone to stay away from Reddit, if you know what's good for you. It has turned even more toxic after today's Mario Kart World Direct.

Anyway, while we already know the majority of the stuff that was shown on the Mario Kart World Direct, it's what we did NOT see that will make us question what the game is trying to hide from us. But based on the amount of backlash that I've been seeing after the Direct, people are looking at Mario Kart World as being an absolute waste of time, and not worth the hefty price that's being thrown at us.

I'm probably gonna stop coming here for a while the criticism here has left me feel disappointed and I want to get away from the Mario Kart drama.
Even other websites since they are more negative then here. At least the game is being different from Mario Kart 8 despite the price and some of the character choices being controversial.

I should probably warn everyone to stay away from Reddit, if you know what's good for you. It has turned even more toxic after today's Mario Kart World Direct.
Especially since there was a point where some subreddits were just talking about the price and nothing else. Its more expansive but that isn't the only thing people should talk about if it's about Mario Kart and the Switch 2 in general.

Well, yeah, that goes without saying. If anything, I think the sad reality is Nintendo knew ahead of time they had to save showstoppers like Diddy and Petey for post-launch since no one but die-hard completionists would put money down on Rocky Wrench, and they wanted this game's roster to be big, so their solution was to just load it up with every enemy model already in the game and also Nabbit.
Of course, the much better solution would've been to delve into their back catalog a bit, but clearly adding Prince Peasley would enrage whatever Faustian devil Nintendo bargained with in 1989 and doom them as a company.
I should probably warn everyone to stay away from Reddit, if you know what's good for you.
Words to live by, in a general sense.

Yeah, if anything, we're left with even more questions than answers. For starters, Knockout Tour may likely end up turning very stale if there's no unlockable option to create a custom tour. And if there's only 32 courses, that's the equivalent of Mario Kart 8 before DLC was ever announced.

Lastly, if Nintendo was to handle updates like it did with Mario Strikers Battle League, it's going to make people feel even more furious.

I'm pretty sure people would be thrilled with free updates, especially if it meant not paying more on top of the $80.

Also, people were not a fan of Battle League's free updates because the game felt unfinished at launch, especially with characters like Daisy not being on the roster at launch. Mario Kart World, despite some of the missing characters like Petey or Diddy Kong, at least not only looks complete and you can clearly see alot of effort in the game, but has all of the major mainstays at launch. If Daisy or Waluigi missed out, then people would've been really angry, but much fewer are that up in arms about Diddy or Petey and alot of people certainly wouldn't be against them coming with a free update, especially if they were to come with their own costumes.
