So, what do you all want from the next Smash Bros.?

EDIT: We have now reached 1900 pages! Only 100 more until we reach 2000 pages!
enjoyment is what I want really. smash is really good game for me to just pull out when I’ve got nothing to do. but I would like a variety of stuff even if I do mostly focus on regular smash

I'm leaning towards no, simply because a lot of work already went into DK's facial features last game and we haven't seen if DK's new design will used in a new DK game. There may also be a timing issue if development began in early 2022.

Mario games focusing graphical fidelity and new animations makes sense in the aftermath of the Mario movie's success and a decade+ of criticism over how sterile New Super Mario Bros. made the series' visuals. Sakurai has always operated more on "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and tailoring graphics to support the overall gameplay experience.
To play Devil's Advocate, timing wouldn't be an issue for New DK. Internal usage of the new design started as early as 2020, going by things that have surfaced, so such a heads up would likely have been given ahead of development. This is especially because DK is an in-house Nintendo character, so it slipping through the cracks like with Marth in Brawl, which Sakurai has spoken on, is less likely to happen.

Microtransactions

Enough games already have microtransactions. Don't let them infect Smash as well. DLC for characters with stages and Mii Costumes with music are probably enough.

As for the question:

So, what do you all want from the next Smash Bros.?

EDIT: We have now reached 1900 pages! Only 100 more until we reach 2000 pages!
At least one major mechanic and some moveset changes. Oh, and I've already said this before, but maybe a change in the main music direction from orchestral to rock and jazz-funk.

Team Final Smashes with certain characters getting special animation attacks, Assist Smash where some assist trophies are playable, and an adventure mode where it's a strategy game like Dissidia and character interactions and story.

The first idea I had before. It would be perfect for some characters like Mario and Luigi with a super from their RPG’s or something like from Project x zone, Chrom and Lucina have a perfect potential one here.

Yall think Donkey Kong will change appearance to better match his new cartoonish design for the next game?
Oh I sure hope not. I finally got to see a good picture of Mario Kart DK and yeah it sucks. This isn't a "Change Bad" thing either. I don’t mind change, most of the redesigns are ok to me, but DK looks like a incest baby that does whippets.

I doubt he’s gonna get changed in Smash tho. Not with how much Sakurai likes Gorilla Kong. I can’t see him going for this crap, he’d prolly look at it and laugh. Unless he’s literally corporate mandated to, but if Nintendo’s still using Rare DK in **** like the park, I doubt they’ll hardball him that bad.

Well, what I would like from the new Smash, is for video game characters to appear that haven't appeared yet and I mean either as newcomers or assist trophies or spirits, it doesn't matter as long as they come. I also want characters that aren't from video games but are related to Nintendo:

Daitouryou (Nintendo hanafuda cards)
Tengu (Nintendo hanafuda cards)
Mini Kangaroo (Mini Game Series)
Nester (Nintendo Power magazine)
Kevin Keene (Captain N: The Game Master)

Good online.
Story cutscenes.
More in-depth movement mechanics.
Olimar with an actually good moveset that's both truly representative of his personality and the Pikmin series as a whole.

So I guess I'll start preparing myself for disappointment on all of these.

Aside from certain newcomers, veteran reworks and a more expansive single-player that brings the best of each previous game back...

I really hope frame-buffering is done away with. Now I'm not that knowledgeable on the mechanic or if it has always existed in the series but Ultimate was the first game where I really noticed a quarter-second delay between a button press and my character responding accordingly. It hasn't made the game unplayable or anything but it does give me the slightest feelling of "This feels unnatural" and that's kinda scared me off from ever seriously trying online matches. (Legitimately I have zero characters in Elite Smash and can't even remember which year I last played Quickplay)

No clone characters. Better rewards than some PGN images. More options and costumes for the Mii Fighters. More options and a mechanic similar to Super Mario Maker for the Stage Builder. A multipath classic mode (the idea of a little story is cute but could be improved with several branches). A story mode that sum the best of Melee's Adventure Mode and Brawl's Subspace Emissary. Not being told "you must learn to gid gut" by some arrogant competitive players that think they own the game because they can play it very well as long as it has three stocks no items only plain stages and I have to play under those conditions or I'm a B class casual player and if I get three stocked ten times in a row and I get angry "It's just a gaaaaame" but if I win my character is broken.

Yknow, all this talk of Donkey Kong design changes, I'm kinda starting to think it's not as extreme as everyone thinks to begin with.

1737224424522.png
1737224437517.png

Like yeah, he looks noticeably different, enough to talk about it. Front-facing, he looks VERY different - it's not his most flattering angle, from what I can gather. From the side, the eyes are quite a bit different, but it's really not that much of a far cry from the Rare DK we've all come to know. And in the context of Smash and his own games, that's probably the angle we're going to see him in 99% of the time. Hell even in Mario Kart you're just gonna be looking at his back.

I don't blame people for not personally liking the changes, but I guess my point is the more I resonate on it... I don't think this is the game changer we're all hyping it up to be. Surely these differences are not substantial enough to require a full brand overhaul - this and Rare DK are identifiable as the same character. For Smash, I think we're more than justified just sticking with good ol DK but adjusting for this model would mostly be tweaking the eyes / brow.

A sigle player mode with the replayability of WOL but with more of a story. Maybe a few cutscenes but i'd just be fine with dialogue boxes. Also better online.

One thing I don't see very often is the concept of Smash as a "series" inside Smash. If Ultimate was a celebration of video games as a whole, what could a game that celebrates the history and legacy of the Smash series look like (besides doing EIH again)?

I'm also not sure why everyone is seemingly like "oh they're getting rid of Rare DK" when this is literally one game that's going for a specific art style that differs from 8 and we've seen VERY little of the new Mario Kart.

Also not sure what makes this design specifically less like "Rare DK" when the movie one is based on the Rare design since DK's been rocking it for like 30 years at this point, so maybe I'm just dumb.

Like if he keeps showing up in games with this tweaked design, sure, then we can start having conversations about a full brand redesign for DK, but like a few seconds of footage of a Mario Kart game that we won't see in full for another two and a half months? That seems way early to call, and especially early to think he's definitely gonna be redesigned in Smash.

So there seems to be two reasons why fighting games have intentional frame delay:
  1. To give rollback a bit of a buffer so that characters don't start teleporting the second the connection isn't absolutely pristine.
  2. To hide Wi-Fi lag (which is a bit of a misnomer because Wi-Fi isn't the only reason online games lag in this way, but it's still a problem nonetheless).
    1. Since they don't have rollback, this is what Smash is doing.
Apparently Brawl had it online only, but SSB4 and Ultimate apply it to the entire game. Unless you're dealing with Wi-Fi lag, you shouldn't notice any difference online compared to offline. Though...Ultimate's online reportedly sucks, so you might have worse problems than a bit of delay. Barring that, it should go relatively smoothly.

Well, I do think there are greater implications of this being a more widespread change than just this footage. The adjustments to DK promo art in the weeks leading up to this reveal contributed to that, and the presence of this more classic styled DK in other sporadic 2D Nintendo art in the years prior. It didn't just materialize out of thin air.

But I also think the assumption that they're burying Rare DK is an overreaction. They have been highly promoting a game with his likeness up to the exact date of the Switch 2 teaser, and his image is prominently featured across their recent park expansion. So I believe there's another answer to this that isn't "they're replacing the old DK design", but I think such a noticeable change does not come lightly and does imply some other initiative. Mario Kart 9 is going for a pretty distinct style, but I won't pretend that DK isn't by far the most different of the bunch.

My theory is still that DKC will continue to use the Rare DK design while the Mario spinoffs will begin to adopt this slightly tweaked version of the character to set the brands further apart. I don't think it's especially necessary for them to do that but maybe they'd rather DKC stand on its own... after incorporating it into the Mario movie. I don't know. Nintendo is strange sometimes.

I just want the next smash to get about a 100 characters by the end of its dlc cycle this time. Just felt like we where so close to a 100 characters in smash ultimate but unfortunately we didn’t end up with that

But anyway even if the next smash has a decent amount of cut characters I think it would be possible to surpass Ultimate in characters if we get more dlc fighter passes this time. I am personally hoping for at least 3 fighter passes this time around instead of just two like in Ultimate.

Veteran overhauls and plenty of newcomers are my two biggest hopes. I know, very bold and daring. Aside from that, I really want to see an expansion of Squad Strike.

KoF, MvC, DBFZ - these fighting games have huge rosters, which perfectly complements the 3v3 format that they use. Smash’s roster is even bigger and the characters are even more simple and easy to get the hang of. Modes that actively encourage using this giant roster need to be amplified.

3v3 shouldn’t be a hidden side mode with zero online support, it should be a front of mind attraction. It definitely needs to be online, but I want more than that. This is a mode that warrants as much attention as Team Battles and Final Smashes. A core feature that pops up in every side mode.

Give us the option of picking a team of characters when playing through classic mode, add event matches / spirit battles that require you to play as a squad. Throw in some easter eggs that occur when you play as a specific squad, i.e., unique victory animations and in-game voice lines. Maybe special artwork that you unlock when completing classic mode with a certain squad.

And then there’s all the ways they could allow us to customize Squad Strike. On top of our current version, give us a proper tag / assist mode. Pull a Skullgirls by allowing one person to play as a single overpowered character, while the opponent uses three regular characters. Maybe even take inspiration from MOBAs by adding a pick / ban mode. Competitive players don’t like items and refuse to play on 90% of stages and you’ll never convince them otherwise. Even Final Smashes missed the mark for competitions. But Squads is a feature that has potential to be enjoyed by both casual and competitive players who want a break from the usual 1v1 and free-for-all battles.

I’m seriously convinced that this is the way. Smash is built for this feature and it can easily distinguish the new Smash from all the older ones, without having to change anything about the core gameplay that already works so well.

I mean from what we've seen I'd consider Bowser pretty different too, especially compared to MK8, but that may partially be because of the stubbier look some of the characters seem to be going for.

I could definitely see this being how DK looks in Mario spinoffs to form brand synergy with the movie, but like even in the movie outside of that one render of him on all fours, when DK stands up he's still a big muscly gorilla, like he's a bit thinner maybe and his mouth is a bit less pronounced, but the main difference is in the eyes as far as I can see and even that's only slight. I basically feel like this whole thing is an overreaction based on DK's driving idle animation, especially considering that first screenshot you posted where he looks visibly annoyed with the open mouth and the eyebrow raise.

So, what do you all want from the next Smash Bros.?
Ultimate Deluxe

Character Changes

-Give Ganondorf a completely unique moveset based on Hyrule Warriors Trident Ganondorf.
-Expand the definition of Echo to include Dr. Mario and Pichu.
-Make Black Shadow the Echo of Captain Falcon and give him Ganondorf's old moveset.
-Give Chrom a new unique moveset. Make Lucina his Echo. Make Roy Marth's Echo.
-Give Falco the Sniper Rifle and Wolf the Machine Gun from StarFox Assault.
-Replace Mario's FLUDD with Cappy.
-Give Young Link and Toon Link different subweapons so they aren't just using the same Bow/Bomb/Boomerang combo as Adult Link.
-Make each of Pokemon Trainer's Pokemon a separate Fighter, give every Pokemon except Mewtwo a trainer.
-Make Mythra into Pyra’s Echo.

Gameplay Features
-Rollback netcode.
-Make Hazardless versions of stages selectable from stage select the same way Omega and Battlefield versions are.
-Remember my last color selection for each character. Smash 3DS did this. No idea why Wii U and Ultimate don't.
-Actually balance FS Meter FSes so that people will actually use them in competitive play.
-Kirby style Boss Rush mode.
-Bring back the Smash Run map as a Battle Royal. (64 players teleport in. Players run around killing creeps and collecting upgrades. Map shrinks over time. Last 4 surviving players have a Smash match.)

Additional Content
-More Characters, Echoes, Bosses, obviously. Preferably from my wishlist.
-Mii Mages.
-Bring back any missing Stages and Assist Trophies that didn't already return.

It's still unusual to me, it'd be like if the next Multiplayer Zelda game looked like Link's Awakening and Echoes of Wisdom, the toy art style, except Links face and outfit was altered to resemble Toon Link.
Toon Link is the official Link style of the "Multiple Links at once" subgenre.

Alongside all that, don't restrict Squad Strike to only having 2 players on the battlefield. Project M was able to have something similar with All-Star Vs., and it lets all 4 players pick as many characters as there are stocks.

What kind of gimmicky, goofy launch title do you think the Switch 2 will have?
I've got this feeling it's gonna be something to do with the supposed mouse feature the Joycons have, assuming they do in fact have it.

If the Switch 2 has mouse functionality, I wouldn't be surprised if we got a launch that utilises the mouse mode. Cause that's usually part of the deal with their unique launch title. They are about using all of the features their system and controller can do.

Probably helps that the Switch 2 will come with a bunch of games that the mouse feature would be perfect for, like Splatoon and Metroid Prime.

Nintendo Switch 2 launches with Miitropolis, the Big N's quirky take on the City Builder genre where (utilizing the mouse feature) you build your own Mii city including customizable sports/play areas that you can then play actual games in ala Wii Sports and Nintendo Switch sports.

With the Mouse-Cons being a thing and MS allegedly having plans for a lot of Switch 2 ports, clearly every Switch 2 will come with a free copy of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition.

Or it'll at least be ported to the system within a year of its release.

Honestly, if it includes/gives a new home to Dr. Wright, since Nintendo owns him but not SimCity as a game, I wouldn't mind this at all lol
