I mean I'm doubting a port because the Switch 2 is backwards compatible and Smash has never done ports (if there was ever a time to do it it would've been Smash 4 since the Wii U was a flop and they didn't even do it then).
And not only that I don't think Sakurai likes the idea of ports. Brawl was notably announced without Sakurai even knowing about it, and Iwata got him to work on the game by threatening to port Melee to the Wii with the only new addition being online play if he refused. So he ultimately chose to create Brawl.

I kind of wonder how history would have changed if Sakurai ultimately refused.

Impossible to say for sure. Not having Sakurai would mean that whoever had to take over would have some pretty big shoes to fill. Moreover, losing his star power, would make negotiations a lot harder. Sora, for example, was a result of Sakurai's personal charisma, initiative and good luck, by bumping into a Disney exec and convincing them of the idea. We might have continued to get cutscenes in the games without Sakurai feeling that them getting spoiled ruined the suprise of having them. Though, another developer might have also decided that hype trailers were worth more than in-game story cutscenes.

What I can say almost for sure is that Pit(If he were ever added in the first place) wouldn't have gotten a redesign. No Sakurai making Brawl means he doesn't see Pit and get the idea to make Kid Icarus: Uprising, so the angel would be stuck with his brawl moveset. We therefore also don't get Palutena and Dark Pit in this timeline.

Melee would have presumably been a new play control version with bad Wifi.

Not even sure if competitive Melee would be as big as this timeline because it’s resilience after Brawl released is why it’s still played by lot of people till this day.

I mean I feel like the original version would still need that resilience because I imagine any further release of Melee would be the PAL version since it had balance changes, and they may just decide to play the original NTSC release anyway since Melee would've been out for a while already, especially if it's a New Play Control (meaning no GCN controller) with bad online.

Honestly can't wait for people to start posting fake leaks that look incredibly absurd, yet somehow a lot of players believe them.

Before I saw the name, I thought that was Tofu from Resident Evil.

My immediate reaction was "probably not my first choice for a Resident Evil character, but it would make for an entertaining joke."

The sad thing is, the rise of AI over the past few years is gonna make the fake leak game even more insufferable the next time around.
Maybe. Or because the majority of people online will quickly assume AI, it may just make image leaks less prominent. Which will make it funnier when the image leak that is real happens and then is revealed to be real.

Regardless, it's going to be an interesting time after the next Smash Bros. is revealed.

No matter the validity of leaks moving forward, one thing is for certain

They will have the ****tiest 2005 cell phone camera picture quality of all time. It is a prerequisite. You will not be taken seriously otherwise.

Something interesting I saw someone on ResetEra point out

Tekken 8, in its marketing for Clive, was able to directly mention Final Fantasy XVI by name and show its logo, this appears on all the marketing for the character. Final Fantasy XVI is rated M by the ESRB, while Tekken 8 is rated T. The same is true with PEGI, where FFXVI is 18+ and Tekken 8 is 16+. It's notable because in Japan, FFXVI and Tekken 8 are both rated CERO-D, which is the equivalent of M for mature, but even in the regions where FFXVI is rated higher the name and logo are still shown.

This topic of the ESRB restrictions have come up a few times in this thread so I thought this was worth mentioning, don't know if it's old news.

Well, not specifically characters that debuted post 2021, but some characters whose main relevance is based on games released after 2021:
  • Master Kohga
  • Off the Hook
  • Toadette
  • Alear
I mean Toadette Makes the most sense as a Toad Costume so im sure she has a good chance!
And dont say they have to be echoes Dude they ahave the exact same proportions and can share animations!
So Toad/ Toadette + the captain version could easily join smash if Sakurai doesnt Screw over toad Again!

I feel like it was ever an issue then they probably just add a disclaimer in trailers if it ever happens in Smash rather then avoid it.
