Assuming there will be another "free" early adopter character like there was in the last two games, who do you think has a shot?
For Sm4sh it was :4mewtwo: if you bought both versions and for Ultimate it was :ultpiranha: if you registered to MyNintendo.
So we have a highly requested veteran who didn't make the cut and a not highly requested but still recognizable newcomer (who was also the "wierd pick"), both first party. Since we don't know who's gonna be cut this time around (if any) I'll go off the second option and say Toad. Even though he isn't a"wierd pick" in the slightest, I think that would satisfy most people as a lukewarm newcomer who most people could go with or without.
Let's see here. The past two early adopter characters were additions from established IPs, one veteran and one newcomer, who some fans could recognize while others would be surprised by.

Hear me out, but if the game wasn't delisted, I'd actually vouch for Euden from Dragalia Lost in this instance.

Highly requested vet, then surprise weirdo. If they keep up the early adopter "bonus" character, I'll say the next one will a requested newcomer.

Part of me wants to say Waluigi. I feel like going the entire pre-release marketing without showing off his AT only to show him dead last as playable but still missing the boat for base game is a very Sakurai move.

The other part of me wants Petey as a direct follow up to Plant. No particular reason. It would be a fun evolution of his roles at least. From boss to FS to fighter.

Depending on who's cut though, I could se3 it being another popular vet that doesn't make it into base.

Final answer actually: some sort of character promotion. Could be a boss, AT, Pokeball or Mii costume but it'll be someone who has "gotten in" at some point in some way, just not in the fighter role as of yet.

On the assumption that it isn't a veteran that missed the boat because of a potential rework and there's actually hidden fighters again (so the "surprise character" isn't public knowledge before release)?

This might be a good place to put Waluigi.

Idk I feel he's too big and requested as a newcomer to be relegated to free bonus character. He'd either have to be base game or DLC.

So was Mewtwo.

Like it's not an exaggeration that he was one of the most requested characters for Smash For in general in spite of being a veteran.

Assuming they don't make the base roster; Dixie, Impa, Funky, Bandana Dee or yes indeed Toad. Paper Mario or Waluigi are also good choices.

I agree, Waluigi is the most requested first-party newcomer, and is of an increasingly small group of first-parties that will appeal widely to both the casual and the hardcore Smash demographics. Relegating him to post-launch DLC incentive would be a misuse of the character's promotional potential imo.

There are many characters that will be able to fill Mewtwo's Smash 4 place if they cut a bunch of characters from base who later show up as DLC. Far fewer who can function in the role of the big cross-audience first-party these days. And unlike Mewtwo, I doubt Waluigi isn't planned from the beginning.

I really want the Warriors Orochi 3 version of Unbreakable Determination if we get Ryu Hyabusa in Smash. Even better if we get Lu Bu as DLC down the line.
That's my favorite version of Unbreakable Determination/4-2/Basilisk Minefield.

We talk about characters too much, let's talk some mf'in STAGES.
Battleship Dodriguez [Contra]
Graveyard [Ghosts 'n Goblins]
Millennium Tower Rooftop [Like A Dragon]
The Village [Resident Evil]
Courtroom [Ace Attorney]

I think it'd be pretty funny if they added the Mega Mushroom for the next game, which they probably won't.
It would be cool as a Final Smash for Mario. It would essentially be identical to how it works on NSMB on DS. The Mega Mushroom would make Mario giant and allow Mario to instantly KOs any opponent by him simply touching them. Also plays the music from that game.

Superstar is more iconic but it would be boring since it just make Mario invincible. Its also already an item.

Both ideas are still better than Mario Finale which just exists for the e3 trailer.

Honestly I'm wondering...

Considering the first "early adopter" bonus was Mewtwo who had a brief showcase of his model, and Plant, who had a fully in-game trailer rather than a cinematic, I almost wonder if we should be looking at characters that it would be hard to build a trailer around.

Obviously veterans would probably count for that, but I moreso mean in terms of if it's a newcomer.

I'd say they haven't already only because the Mushroom item does the same thing already, and while the Mega Mushroom could bring that to an amusing extreme, it'd probably come at the cost of being usable in normal gameplay.

Mewtwo I think was revealed the way he was because he was so unfinished. That and none of SSB4's DLC newcomers had a CGI trailer barring Corrin who literally just reused an existing cutscene.

Piranha Plant is an actual outlier here since Ultimate's DLC did get CGI trailers, but I think overall it has more to do with budget and how far along the character is rather than creativity on Sakurai's part.

Probably for Mewtwo since I think he was mid-development at that point, but now this has me thinking about potential newcomers that it might be hard to make a trailer for lol

I think that's a red herring. Mewtwo wasn't far enough in production for a real trailer, and for Smash 4 they probably didn't have the budget or foresight of Ultimate's DLC trailers like how Joker was also too early for gameplay but could still have a more highly-produced trailer.

Mewtwo would eventually get a trailer more on par with the other 4 DLC, he was just already known by then.

And then for Plant, tbh... it's PP, and the CGI trailers are no doubt costly, so that was probably just a budget-saving maneuver.

I think it was other factors which resulted in their situations, not a lack of being able to devise a fuller trailer. I mean, not every reveal trailer has to be as elaborate as like, Sephiroth's or Terry's anyway... some end up simpler and shorter like Steve's or Kazuya's.

You know what I'm hoping for. That if the next Smash Bros. brings back Stage Builder, I just want a plain block texture and a pixel block texture that you can edit to be any color to make it easier to create stages with the right colors. Because not only would it be nice to actually have a stage builder texture just able to be colored anything and look plain normal compared to being restricted to the textures in Smash Ultimate, one of the things I did alot for Smash 4 and a bit for Smash Ultimate was try to make NES & SNES Stages. I basically looked at video game stage maps and then tried to re-create them to some extent. The two easiest ones I did for both were Vegetable Valley from Kirby's Adventure and the World 1 Airship from Super Mario Bros. 3.

But regardless, my OCD always made it hard to do Stage builder in Ultimate because of the textures being fixed to certain colors and the layers being off-putting when looking at them from a top-down angle(really need the layers to connect/match up better next game). The Data bar making it harder to do big stages with a lot of details didn't help either.
The rumored Mouse feature will certainly make some things easier to make and whatnot, but as I stated, besides making it much easier to add details to stages without getting punished by the data bar thing, the thing I'm really hoping for is that we get a plain block texture and a potential Pixel block option or something like that that can be made any color to allow for maximum detail potential. A Pixel background would also be nice. Cause I'd love to be able to create NES/SNES/Genesis stages in Stage Builder.

In addition to all that, one thing that bothered me is that none of the materials are orange. If I wanted to make a stage based on Buizel or Plessie or something, I’m out of luck.
I do think it’s neat that theres a big variety of materials, but they could let most of them be recolorable too.
