Smash 4 ported heavily from Brawl? Woah, i didn't know this, i through i was made from (mostly) the ground up, it looks so diferent from Brawl.
You learn something every day!
Bowser and Yoshi still have a lot of old animations despite their upright stances. You can see them shift from the old ones to their new ones during their taunts.

We found the data for Brawl in Smash 3DS's stuff. It was removed in future patches. They used it to make some of the groundwork as is. This is a good way to return veterans, by modifying their previous data. Unfortunately things don't always work out, heh. (I.E. Licensing)

you know what I just realized? Since it IS a mobile game series despite being a multimedia franchise...Umamusume COULD technically get a character in.

just saying.
Not direcrly related to Umamusume (I spelled it right? xD), but it would be really interesting we got a 3rd party character that's from a game that's not in a nintendo console like Metaphor: ReFantazio or Elden Ring, peraphs even one froma gacha game like Genshin Impact, Honkai or Zenless Zone Zero . Of course, the chances of this happening are very low and i doubt it's happening but i think it would be cool for one DLC character.

Cloud was that before the original FF7 was ported on Switch. So was Joker before P5 got ported on, once again, the Switch.
I swear to ****ing god if someone brings up Chain of Memories, Theatrhythm or Persona Q2, I will ****ing lose my mind!

I've said it before and I'll say it again; It's less that we need a character on a Nintendo console and more that it's a good indicator of Nintendo's relations with the IP owner. Squeenix and Atlus/Sega are major supporters for Nintendo systems, so the door was open to Smash negotiations. I have no idea who owns Umamusume, so I can't comment on their ties to Nintendo

EXACTLY!

If Nintendo and another company have good relations, Nintendo would absolutely gun for the biggest hitters of that other company for a Smash spot. This is why, using Square Enix as an example, we got Cloud, Hero, Sephiroth and Sora (last one owned by Disney but Square still needs to be involved) over someone like Ninja or Black Mage, generic class representatives who have appeared in some Mario sports games.

The IP is owned by Cygames.

Which... well, they've got another IP that would probably get first dibs if they were to get a character.

Golden Sun has been added to the Nintendo Music app.

Just goes to show, that even if the franchise is currently dead, it's seen as valuable to Nintendo in regards to the GBA library.
Wow, a bit early on that one too, wasn't expecting anything until tomorrow lol

Golden Sun is a good pull, glad to see it. Was kinda hoping for something a little more niche that was GBA or 3DS since we've gotten two Mario games and a Pokemon game lately and bam, everything's coming up Isaac lol

Golden Sun has become the new Mother / Earthbound.

Except nothing to show for yet in Smash 🙃🥲

...Wait? They declared Golden Sun a finished series?! Cause that's what it would mean.

I do feel you on that front otherwise, in the sense of "they clearly are getting small stuff, but no new games". Man, I wish we'd get a sequel to Dark Dawn. Balance issues aside(and some decisions), it was a rather fun game. I liked the new way of using Psynergy outside of battle. It was a good use of the DS' capabilities.

I'm hoping that "yet" will be changed next Smash after the Assist Trophy coming back and getting more moves alongside the Mii Costume.

Like Isaac has a couple of angles in now potentially, and I'm hoping he's able to take one of them.

Two Res here.

Stage Reviews (Melee):

Want
  • Princess Peach's Castle: I don't particularly care for this stage, and others like it that separate players, but it's probably the best execution of an iconic location, so I think it should stick around.
  • Rainbow Cruise: It's a classic, and I think it would be weird if we didn't have it. I also like it as a 1v1 stage with hazards off.
  • Kongo Falls: This stage is neat. I like the layout and the aesthetic, and the stuff that the rapids hurl at you. It's just a fun time.
  • Temple: This baby ain't going anywhere. Which is good, because even fully HD it feels retro, and I love it for that. It's also just impeccably designed.
  • Fountain of Dreams: I want this in a game that isn't filled with tri-plats on the new system that's powerful enough to handle it even when 3 players are Ice Climbers and Wario is on his bike. That way I can see this beauty in tournament play in all it's HD glory.
  • Mute City: This looks like fun. I want to play on it.
  • Onett: It's a classic, and it's always fun to mess around on.
  • Icicle Mountain: I want to see what this would look like in HD. I have no other motives, I just wanna see the glow up. I bet it could look pretty cool.
  • Battlefield: Gotta have it. Smash isn't Smash without it, though I wouldn't say "no" to them changing up the aesthetic.
  • Final Destination: See above.
  • Poké Floats: GIVE IT ME NOW!!!
  • Big Blue: I used to hate this stage, but 3 games in and it's growing on me.
  • Fourside: Love the aesthetic and there is ample room to fight on either side of the empire state building. Also a l i e n s.
Like, but Don't Necesserilly Want
  • Great Bay: It's kind of awkward, but it's full of charm.
  • Corneria: I like the layout of this stage, and the visuals are really crisp in Ultimate. It just isn't something I go to often.
Indifferent
  • Mushroom Kingdom (Melee): No cool pipe gimmick, but also no fight club walk-off...Eh? It'd be neat to experience it once, but I otherwise don't really care.
  • Yoshi's Story: It's a neat stage, but it's my least favorite tri-plat and there are so many at this point. If it comes back, neat, but I won't cry if it doesn't.
  • Jungle Japes: One of the stages of all time. Probably everyone's least favorite mainstay stage (though 75m will take that spot if it returns for a third time), and while I don't particularly dislike it, I have never thought "hey, I never go there, I should pick it this time".
  • Brinstar: I've never been a fan of this stage. It's OK, and I will probably play on it a couple times when it comes back, but I'm very rarely in the mood for it.
  • Green Greens: It just doesn't appeal to me. It's a unique layout with interesting gimmicks, but I can't bring myself to care...Maybe it's just the bland grassland aesthetic?
  • Pokémon Stadium: I like this stage idea and think it should exist in every game, but I don't think we need both it and its sequel. More than that, I want to see a Pokémon Stadium 3 with four more type transformations. I know that's kind of what Kalos Pokémon League is, but eh. It's no the same.
  • Mushroom Kingdom II: It's just OK. I like it's faux 2D aesthetic, and it can be chaotic fun, but that's about it.
No Thanks
  1. Yoshi's Island (Melee): Why on earth does this stage have perfect attendance since Melee (discounting 3Ds)? I mean, it can be fun, but the weird bowl shape and slanted walk-off make people live forever unless you just die because you tried to fight in the center. Also if we're renaming redundantly named stages, why didn't they call this one Super Mario World? And why is this a Yoshi stage, it's from a Mario game!
  2. Venom: I'm glad I got to play on it once, but now I'm good. It's got the problem I have with Princess Peach's Castle, but way worse, and not a whole lot is going on.
  3. Brinstar Depths: I want to like this stage, so I keep going here and not having fun. Release my from my prison in the depths of Planet Zebes! Or if they do bring it back please make the AI run better on it so they actually try to fight me instead of sitting off to the side as the platform rotates.
  4. Flat Zone: Just keep Flat Zone X.

This game added most of the iconic stages we know today, and that's reflected in the number of stages that I want to be there even if I don't necessarily like them. I also feel it makes the most out of simplicity and I admire that about these stages. The duds are mostly just "eh" rather than "I hate this gimmick please kill it" like you see in future games.
Here’s my follow-up with the remaining games.
Want
Final Destination: While it technically debuted in Melee for multiplayer, I don’t know if this should be called a Melee stage specifically. I’m curious how they’ll approach it next game. I think Brawl’s is my favorite background design.
Battlefield: Similar to Final Destination, but I like Ultimate’s version the most.
Kongo Falls: My favorite of the Donkey Kong stages in Ultimate.
Great Bay: I love how this stage plays.
Big Blue: A Classic F-Zero stage, and it’s fun fighting on the Falcon Flyer or the cars.
Fountain of Dreams: The prettiest stage in the game barring possibly Magicant.
Corneria: It’s a classic stage, and I prefer it over the other staples.
Pokefloats/Kanto Skies: I love the clunkiness of this stage.
Like but can Part with

Brinstar: Same story as Jungle Japes.

Icicle Mountain
Brinstar Depths

Pokemon Stadium 2: The renovated Pokemon Stadium stage.
Smashville: A classic Animal Crossing stage.

Yoshi’s Island/Flower Fields: A nice competitive stage that I’m not as attached to.
Port Town Aero Dive

Spear Pillar: It has a cool gimmick and would be welcomed if there is time.
Distant Planet: The buborb is funny, but I’d prioritize other stages.
Green Hill Zone: A classic Sonic location, but not my favorite layout.
Indifferent
Flat Zone 2: Obsolete from Flat Zone X
Mushroomy Kingdom: I feel like the absence of 1-2 hurts it.
Mario Bros.
Rumble Falls
75m
Bridge of Eldin
New Pork City
Pictochat: Obsolete from Pictochat 2
Hannenbow
Shadow Moses Island
Want
Rainbow Road: I usually like Rainbow Roads in Mario Kart
Gerodo Valley: I love the layout and the hazard for this stage.

Mute City SNES: I find the layout of the stage to be fun.
Magicant: The prettiest stage in the game besides Fountain of Dreams.
Pictochat 2: Renovated Pictochat.
Pac-Maze: I think the Super Smash Flash version would work well.
Like but can Part with
Paper Mario: I find this one fun to play on even if it isn’t the largest priority.
Spirit Train
Reset Bomb Forest: I like the layout and transition, but can live without it.
Unova Pokemon League: The map and hazards are cool, but I just prefer the other stages.
Prism Tower
Balloon Fight
Indifferent
3D Land

Like but can Part with

Midgar: I prefer Northern Cave more.
Indifferent
Mario Galaxy

Palutena’s Temple

Let’s say that the next Smash game launches with 60-65 characters. That means roughly:
  • 45 veterans
  • 15 unique newcomers
  • 5 Echo Fighters
That would be between what Smash 4 ended on (58 fighters) and what Smash Ultimate launched with (76 fighters, including Echo Fighters).
I’ll focus on the veterans for now and then add newcomers later.
:ultmario::ultluigi::ultbowser::ultpeach::ultdk::ultdiddy::ultyoshi::ultwario::ulticeclimbers:

:ultryu::ultmegaman::ultsonic::ultmiifighters:
Reasoning
From SSB64, the only one that would be at risk is Jigglypuff as it’s historically been low priority. The original eight seem to be important to the developers, Luigi is the player two character in gaming, Captain Falcon is an SSB fan favorite, and Mother is important to SSB (11 veterans). I cut Jigglypuff here, but I could see it being a late addition like in 64, Brawl, and For.
From Melee, I think most would agree with my decisions to keep Bowser, Princess Peach, Princess Zelda, Ganondorf, Marth, and Mr. Game & Watch as the first four are major characters in flagship Nintendo series, Marth is the closest to a Fire Emblem mascot, and Mr. Game & Watch is the classic surprise fighter I also made a controversial decision to keep Ice Climbers, who seem to be the most valued cut fighter outside of Pokemon Trainer from the developers’ perspective (18 veterans).
From Brawl, very few would argue against Meta Knight, King Dedede, Wario, Diddy Kong, Sonic, and Olimar given that the first four are major characters from franchises with fighters (Wario is interesting where he’s a Mario Kart/Party staple but also has his own series in the form of Wario Land and Wario Ware), Sonic is the poster child for third party fighters, and Pikmin is highly valued by Nintendo. Additionally, Pit is a big part to SSB, and he isn’t going anywhere. Personally, I think the Pokemon Trainer is important enough to prioritize here given their role in Pokemon and how they represent multiple aspects of the series. I also kept Ike and Lucario to supplement the Fire Emblem and Pokemon selection given their legacy within and outside of SSB (30 veterans).
From For, I pretty much with the leads of the most relevant Nintendo series (Villager and Shulk), the Mii Fighters for the sales of their costumes, and Mega Man, Pac-Man, and Ryu for supplemental third parties as Mega Man was requested, and Pac-Man and Ryu sem like a higher priority for the developers (38 vetrans).
From Ultimate, Inkling represents the most recent blockbuster, Ridley was a requested pick since the Brawl era, Isabelle is a major character from a blockbuster franchise, and Byleth, Aegis, and Min Min help keep things contemporary (45 veterans).
I think this covers most bases pretty well, but we do get some tough cuts like Rosalina, King K. Rool, Sheik (personally), Little Mac, and a plethora of third party fighters.

Problem here is they didn't have two months, the Smash Fighter Ballot began on April 1st, 2015. That patch came out on April 15th, so literally just two weeks after.
same thing, most of the votes would come in basically immediately. I just said two month as an example.

Kinda hope for the same. But its easy to lose hope.

Imagine being both a Donkey Kong and Golden Sun fan at this time. Sometimes I wonder why I deserved all this lol

I mean as a Fossil Fighters/Rhythm Heaven/Starfy fan, at least Donkey Kong is pretty likely to get a new game after Metroid Prime 4 comes out, at least I would think so lol

At this point, Metroid Prime 5 might come out before Metroid Prime 4 😂

I get what you're saying though. You also really didn't get lucky. I might love "Monkey Mario" and "Dragon Quest with the 4 elements" but loving discount Dino Pokemon, Wario Ware but weird and Starfish Kirby must be rough to.

I've seen three WarioWare games since the last Rhythm Heaven, and I love WarioWare, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Gold and Get It Together, but the same team makes both and I'm getting a little worried/aggravated lmao

Like DK is sort of in the same boat since Tropical Freeze originally released because of Samus Returns, Dread, and Prime 4, but like at least we presumably know WHY (since Prime 4 has been in the works at Retro since at least 2019) and it's not like Tropical Freeze sold poorly, especially the port, so there's no reason not to make another? Rhythm Heaven historically hasn't sold well outside of like the DS game lol

it's vague for me too lol
it had something to do with one of the 50 cent videogames? the wii one maybe? and started I think with a series of posts from one particular user, then grew into a running mention in the thread

In their defense, why would you even consider making another platformer of one of Nintendo's most famous and high quality brands after massive success of your last game with the perfect engine already available? After all, another development studio can always remake your first platformer with considerable worse quality almost a decade later while you yourself try to make that one shooter game work for a series that released high quality games in the meanwhile. 🥲

Donkey Kong isn't dead indeed. Just insanely bad managed. Might as well bring back the Bongos while we're at it. At least in that age and time, we had Jungle Climber, which was amazing and at least had K.Rool.

Eh, I still feel like K. Rool's popularity on the Ballot even surprising Nintendo higher-ups (as far as I recall anyway) might at least give Retro the option to use K. Rool and the Kremlings if they want to lol

He feels like a character who you could pretty easily bring back, like I could really easily see a story that's basically K. Rool going "Oh yeah, the Tiki Tak Tribe, the Snowmads? I did that ****" lmao

In all honesty, as someone who liked the Snowmads and would like to see them again, rather than a "K.Rool behind the scenes" deal, I'd like to see like a rivalry between the two, sort of like when the Pirates appeared in the DKC cartoon and you have the heroes having to deal with both the Kremlings and the pirates, but the two are also competing and fighting with each other. And you cannot convince me you don't want to see a giant crocodile with a talent for machinery and a blunderbuss fighting against a giant viking walrus with a giant horn that can shoot forth ice dragons.

That would work too, especially since Lord Fredrik was basically a K. Rool fight in all but name lol

As in like, if K. Rool had dressed up as a viking and been the big bad in Tropical Freeze, I feel like it would've gone exactly the same way lol

Atlus and Fromsoftware have established relationship long enough. But, Hoyoverse is tricky. There has been talk about Switch port, but hasn't happened due to technical limitation. I don't know how that translates to much of needed long term relationship. It can set new precedent of setting relationship if Nintendo decides to add Hoyo characters. And, I just don't see Honkai or ZZZ getting a character before Genshin. Genshin is still their most popular franchise with the longest history. It will be almost as old as Minecraft when Steve was at least considered.

The Snowmads as a whole where kind of a homage to the Kremlings in general. Which made me think, why not go for them instead?

I mean it worked out well. And I doubt the Kremlings and K.Rool would replicate the frozen over DK Island theme as effectively, but one has to wonder.

I doubt we'll see them back though. They where good enough for a one time only. Even if Snowmads vs Kremlings is kinda appealing, save that for some type of spin off.

I mean, the current devs of DKC not paying much attention to the Rareware-created characters(it doesn't matter who owns them now) makes a bit of sense. They want to do their own thing. Especially when Rareware is no longer part of Nintendo. That's a good incentive to try and recreate the game so it feels like a new era.

It didn't work out, but I get the point behind it. Not using K. Rool made sense if you're not using the general Kremling Crew too.

Camelot has been cursed with never completing stories/making sequels since Shining Force 3. That goes for every former staff member that came straight out of Sonic Software Planning that when onto make other things as well. Climax, Nextech, Crazy Games...

Oof. It was a joke, though. Mainly cause Golden Sun is not a declared finished series. Unlike Mother/EarthBound, heh.

Actually, it's been researched and Square-Enix partially owns him too. It's kind of complicated.
The KH games only list Square Enix for the Final Fantasy characters as shown before the title screen in most of the games. It just shows the Disney copyright symbol outside of that.

Disney made KH V CAST without Square’s involvement which included Sora.

Disney probably just wants Square to be involve like how most of the KH smart phone games are canon.

It's not like Retro Studios was the first to do such. Nintendo EAD, how it was called back in the day, did the same with Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. Whilst a developer called PAON was ever ready to use everything Rare made ever, even more enthusiastically than Rare themselves. They made new Kremlings even, and their version of K.Rool was used for the longest time.

So I never really felt this argument held much water. You can do new stuff with the Kremlings to. Mutate them into dinosaur or something. And K.Rool as a character lives by having a new theme for just about every game he's in.
