Or rather, a PlayStation All-Star.

I remember so many fans (including myself) wanting him in that game when it was coming out too.
And yet, he ended up in Smash instead, despite his series having more history with PlayStation than with Nintendo.

Then again, I guess the same could be said for Snake and Cloud.

This thought just came to me but I hope the next game either really de-emphasizes mashing or removes it entirely. Such a bad mechanic that just wears down your controllers.

Maybe they could make it so everything that used to require mashing now requires you to press a sequence of buttons, chosen at random each time and displayed above your character portrait. Or just make every grab last a fixed amount of time before it ends in a grab release.
100% agree and I like the idea of inputting a sequence instead.

It sucks that my unwillingness to damage my controller directly correlates to grabs being more effective against me.

You want people to pay attention to a randomly changing button prompt above their character portrait every time they do a mashing pummel?!

I mean when I have to mash I usually instinctively hit buttons because of other games I've played, so I would just make so that like mashing buttons AND/OR spinning the stick can lead to the same results lol

Like not in a way where doing both doubles your mash obviously, but like both can help get you out of stuff.

I mean Sora was somewhat of a polling whiff. He wasn't completely absent from polls by any stretch, still being in the top ten third parties overall. But based on the polling data alone you wouldn't conclude he'd be a likely #1 vote-getter. Makes me think maybe some of his voters were less inclined to respond to polls due to either (1) voters being scared away by dominant perception that he wasn't possible and/or (2) a large casual voting block not in-tune with internet speculation and willing to vote with lesser regard to likelihood than the average hardcore speculator might.

I don't give a **** about KH. But I'd be insane to suggest it's not wildly popular.

I feel like he'd fall into the same category as Dr. Kawashima.

I skipped to then end and didn't even see Hayabusa on the list.

Most people don't know that, so just saying Bo is insufficient. And it's useful to differentiate between a wizard staff and a martial arts staff.
Yeah probably should have mentioned that but I wanted to get the point across that she wasn’t a magical staff user and that it’s a martial artists staff user instead. Tho she does have a little bit of magic but it has nothing to do with her staff that does the magic, and her fighting style still focuses more in the martial artists staff combat.

Which makes sense given that there was a massive anti-third party sentiment in the Smash fanbase during Smash 4's lifespan. The community back then had a massive bias towards more cartoony characters, with more realistically proportioned characters being frowned upon. Their belief was that companies are allowed to have one playable rep in Smash, and that 3rd party characters had to have a very significant connection with Nintendo. They pointed toward Snake being cut in Smash 4 as proof of this, with them believing that the only reason why he even got into Brawl to begin with was as a favor to Sakurai's close friend Hideo Kojima, who is no longer involved with Konami.

I feel like there’s still a general trend towards cheery cartoony characters for fan requests. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. They do fit the general Nintendo image well so it makes sense why they’d resonate with Smash fans. You don’t really see many people requesting the kind of characters I like most. I’d say my favorite style of character design is kind of comic book inspired with bright colors and exaggerated features. I like games with a bit of an edge but I’m less into the more realistic and washed out designs like Dark Souls and more into the general look of Darksiders. It’s hard to communicate exactly what that style is.

I can't believe I'm arguing this but...

Sora makes sense as the ballot winner for a lot of reasons.

  1. Kingdom Hearts is a major franchise worldwide. It's massive in Japan and huge in other areas. I don't know why this is being argued. It just is. Kingdom Hearts isn't like Doom or Dragon Quest, where one region carries the IP's popularity. Kingdom Hearts is popular everywhere.
  2. Kingdom Hearts isn't a franchise with a ton of Nintendo connections, but it's a franchise with a lot of fan overlap. Kingdom Hearts is popular with Nintendo fans. And this has been the case since Brawl era.
  3. Even if its not much, there IS a Nintendo connection. Several important titles were on Nintendo handhelds, so Nintendo fans were definitely aware of the franchise. I got into the franchise through Chain of Memories because the GBA was all we had back then.
  4. Unlike other massive franchises like Final Fantasy or Street Fighter, Sora support isn't splintered. If you were voting for a Kingdom Hearts character, you were most assuredly voting for Sora. It isn't like Cloud or Ryu where a notable amount of people preferred other options.
  5. Kingdom Hearts fans are REALLY passionate about Kingdom Hearts. If you knew any teenage gamer girls back then, chances are they LOVED the franchise. Like REALLY loved. It's one of those franchises that creates life long passion and obsession. This is a good thing btw. Hobbies are good. I knew a guy who bought a PS4 just for Kingdom Hearts 3.
  6. Sora is just... Iconic. People know him. They know Kingdom Hearts. Or at the very least, they know him as the Final Fantasy and Disney guy.
  7. 2015 was a hyped up era for Kingdom Hearts fans. They were excited and almost rabbid about Kingdom Hearts 3. The fandom was pretty active back then. They just came off of the fan favorites that are 2 and BBS. 3 being disappointing hadn't happened yet.
  8. Also he like... Topped several fan polls. He wasn't a surprise. Nearly everyone saw that result and said, "yeah that makes sense."

People will argue anything.:ultsora:

To be honest, Xemnas was on my personal top 10 list before DLC ended and Sora wasn’t but I’m weird like that. I’m also supporting Magus over Crono. I do agree with everything you said here though.

Is there a character in the Ultimate roster that qualified as "obscure" when they joined Smash Bros.?
Maybe Ice Climbers in Melee? But i dunno, i don't think they were that unknown.

Probably ROB, Duck Hunt, Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch, Lucas, Marth and Roy off the top of my head. F-Zero was fairly popular but I’m not sure how many people knew the individual racers like Captain Falcon at the time.

In fairness xemnas is one of the best villains
He and Ansem (Seeker of Darkness) are still pretty high up on my most wanted list but they don’t quite crack the top 10 anymore. They’re definitely my most wanted Kingdom Hearts characters though.

Duck Hunt is one of the most iconic NES games out there. It's up there with Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, and The Legend of Zelda in the "if you ask an older adult they probably know about it" club.
Interesting. I owned it as a kid as part of a three pack of Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, and Track & Field but I never really hear anyone talk about it outside of Smash.

Btw how would you like to see bendy if he becomes playable?
For me its a morphing character whos either a lightweight or heavy!
With lil bendy having refrences to his cartoons and the protagonists abilitys while the ink demon has just really creepy strong attacks!

Ah yeah and half the alts would be suit bendy and the ink demon while the others would be cartoon bendy and ink bendy!

you meant Family Fun Stadium, right?
Whatever game had the giant pad you put on the ground and ran on. There were a bunch of circles on the pad you were meant to place your feet on and run. I remember my mother used to dislike that game because we always made such a racket running on the pad lol.

Shulk! I think it's easy to forget how Xenoblade Chronicles was just one standalone game at the time - Smash was taking a chance on this series and it paid off big time. Perhaps something of a self fulfilling prophecy, there's no doubt that Smash helped boost the series' credibility and notoriety.

I imagine the whole Operation Rainfall campaign helped showcase the passion and interest that overseas audiences had for this game. I want to point out that Xenoblade came out in the states less than a month prior to Sakurai presenting his project plan... the timing was right, and Sakurai is openly a big fan of the game, so things fell neatly into place for Shulk. Kind of amazingly so. Not only is Shulk in the game, but they went the whole extra mile with the Metal Face boss.

I will always remember Sakurai saying something akin to "Shulk isn't the kind of character we usually add", whatever that means. But is probably in reference to Xenoblade lacking both the general notoriety and series scope that most other series represented in Smash do. Kind of crazy to look back and this, after Xenoblade's contemporary success, and remember that Shulk wasn't even deemed recognizable enough to reveal outside of a Japanese Direct.

I'd prefer it if things that required rapid tapping were simply hold the button down instead.

Ice Climbers. Game & Watch. Marth and Roy in NA.

Probably ROB, Duck Hunt
Nah. ROB and Dunk Hunt might be extremely retro, but they were still touchstones for an entire generation of gamers.

Contrast that with Ice Climbers, which was never popular.

Not a whole lot to talk about. It's a pretty basic game, that doesn't get ported because zapper. And never got a sequel(it's insane that Wii Sports never had a Duck Hunt game).

But as a pack-in game, it's extremely well known.

Also re: Duck Hunt, from a western perspective, this is maybe one of the most recognizable Nintendo characters in the game outside the big mascots. People have made jokes about knocking the dog's teeth in for decades and Smash finally let you fight the guy. Funny enough, I think Smash really saved their reputation. Duck Hunt is still a bit of a trickster, but they made the dog so lovable here that I hardly see the same sentiment about them being one of the "most hated video game characters" or whatever.

Although it's noteworthy that Super Mario Bros / Duck Hunt combo was sold outside of Japan. Duck Hunt isn't as synonymous there as it is here, so I recall there being some slight indifference or confusion about their addition on home turf initially. Meanwhile pretty much anyone who owned an NES here had a copy and... well, if you live in America, you're probably more compelled toward the gun peripheral anyway. Zapper was one of those things like ROB that helped push the console along as a toy just as well as an entertainment center. So I guess they're especially important to us, as western Nintendo fans.

I've had a few usernames over the years

My first was 8-bit Man, which came from the idea I had to had an NES equivalent to Mr Game & Watch. Essentially an OC, who used moves from a bunch of NES games.

My second was Mr. Nintendo. Which I used in many more places. It originally used it on gamefaqs to respond as a joke to someone, but I liked it and made it my default. I'm actually tempted to go back to it.

NintenRob was to have something more individualized to me. I started dabbling in YouTube and Twitch and thought Mr Nintendo was a name that would be detrimental. But I dunno, I think I want to go back. Would love thoughts on this

I'm honestly surprised there are people that still question Sora's ballot win. Sora was literally the best thing we could've gotten and it happened. What a time to be alive when that was revealed. (even though Sora's inclusion was leaked months before through a Disney music coming to Smash leak which happened in the middle of 2021 afair)

Yeah i remember him saying that lol, i think he meant that was well, otherwise i have no idea what else he could've refered to.

I wonder if stuff released after the project plan can be added? or project plain is the limit?

I mean, it's likely a mix of both.

What most people look back on for Smash 4 Ballot era speculation is mostly limited to Smashboards, YouTube, and GameFaqs. Twitter hadn't really become a dominant speculation arena yet. But there were TONS of people well outside of those three websites. It wasn't just Smash 4 superfans voting. One of the best go-to examples of this, in my eyes, is Tumblr.

Back in those days, there was a sizable chunk of the fanbase there that didn't really intersect with the three aforementioned sites of the 4 days. And presumably, a wider and more diverse sect of ballot voters, like a smaller version of the groundswell that would happen in the Twitter/Ultimate era. And what's funny is that the Tumblr Ballot Exit Poll™ from those days that was going around actually did a fairly good job of showing characters that we know did well on the ballot.

The poll results post. The sample size is comparable if not larger than the polls from sites like Smashboards and GameFaqs at the time.

My understanding is they usually stick to their guns here unless they've set aside a placeholder slot. Which as we know is frequently done for Pokemon and has been done for Fire Emblem in the past, so whatever characters are fortunate enough to trickle in after the project plan are from these series that are always introducing new major characters / protagonists.

Actually according to the project slides and notes we were shown, this is what Sakurai has to say about it.

I feel like Pokemon is the main exception on that since Sakurai gets info from Pokemon Company so far ahead that Greninja didn't have a name when Sakurai selected it for Smash 4.

Otherwise it's a pretty solid indication of the limit though there may be exceptions here and there potentially? Which is why I'm kiiiinda hoping the 2021/2022 project plan isn't Smash because that's a pretty short turnover considering Ultimate's newest character is from 2019 lol

I do think if :ultshulk: never got into Smash 4, :ultpyra::ultmythra: would have gotten into Ultimate anyway and effectively become the mascots of the series.

It would’ve been like a modern day :ultness: situation.

We’d probably be discussing Shulk’s chances right now if he didn’t make it into Smash 4.
